Artificial neural network optimized by differential evolution for predicting diameters of jet grouted columns

A novel and effective artificial neural network(ANN) optimized using differential evolution(DE) is first introduced to provide a robust and reliable forecasting of jet grouted column *** proposed computational method adopts the DE algorithm to tackle the difficulties in the training and performance of neural networks and optimize the four quintessential hyper-parameters(*** epoch size,the number of neurons in a hidden layer,the number of hidden layers,and the regularization parameter) that govern the neural network *** approach is further enhanced by a stochastic gradient optimization algorithm to allow ’expensive’ computation *** ANN-DE is first trained using a prepared jet grouting dataset,then verified and compared with the prevalent machine learning tools,*** networks and support vector machine(SVM).The results show that,the ANN-DE outperforms the existing methods for predicting the diameter of jet grouting columns since it well balances training efficiency and model ***,the ANN-DE achieved root mean square error(RMSE)values of 0.90603 and 0.92813 for the training and testing phases,*** corresponding values were 0.8905 and 0.9006 for the optimized ANN,then,0.87569 and 0.89968 for the optimized SVM,*** proposed paradigm is bound to be useful for solving various geotechnical engineering problems regardless of multi-dimension and nonlinearity.

Use of recycled gypsum in the cement-based stabilization of very soft clays and its micro-mechanism

This paper presents an experimental study and micro-mechanism discussion on gypsum role in the mechanical improvements of cement-based stabilized clay(CBSC).A soft marine clay at two initial water contents(i.e.50%and 70%)was treated by reconstituted cementitious binders with varying gypsum to clinker(G/C)ratios and added metakaolin to facilitate the formation of ettringite,followed by the measurements of final water contents,dry densities and strengths in accordance with ASTM standards as well as microstructure by mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Results reveal that the gypsum fraction has a significant influence on the index and mechanical properties of the CBSC,and there exists a threshold of the G/C ratio,which is 10%and 15%for clays with 50%and 70%initial water contents,*** which adding excessive gypsum cannot improve the strength further,eliminating the beneficial *** these thresholds of the G/C ratio,the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)values for clays with 50%and 70%initial water contents are 1.74 MPa and 1.53 MPa at 60 d of curing,*** characterization shows that,besides the common cementation-induced strengthening,newly formed ettringite also acts as significant pore infills,and the associated remarkable volumetric expansion is responsible,and may be the primary factor,for the beneficial strength gain due to the added ***,pore-filling ettringite also leads to the conversion of relatively large inter-aggregate to smaller intra-aggregate pores,thereby causing a more homogeneous matrix or solid skeleton with higher ***,added gypsum plays a vital beneficial role in the strength development of the CBSC,especially for very soft clays.

Fabrication and Adsorption Properties of Hybrid Material with Micropores from SBA-15

A novel hybrid material with microporous structure was fabricated from SBA-15 with mesopores via silane modification and hydrolysis. Two kinds of pores with diameters of 6.5 and 1.9 nm were found in the hybrid material. Compared to that of SBA-15, the surface area of the hybrid material increased from 395.9 m2/g to 667.4 m2/g while its porous volume decreased. The new hybrid material was found to have high efficiency in removing NaCl from solution, and the maximum adsorption capacity of it was ca. 517.5 mg/g.

Bathymetry inversion using the deflection of the vertical:A case study in South China Sea

The deflection of the vertical is one of the essential products of ***,unlike gravity and vertical gravity gradients,it is seldom used in bathymetry *** this study,an algorithm for bathymetry inversion using the deflection of the vertical is ***,we separately derive the formulas for the bathymetry inversion from the north and east components of the vertical deflection and introduce the data *** a local area in the South China Sea is selected as an example to test the *** bathymetry inversion based on gravity anomaly is also conducted for *** the ship-borne depths are the true values,the error standard deviations(STDs)of the bathymetry derived by north and east components of the vertical deflection are 156.64 m and 165.57 m,*** indicates that the north component has a better performance in bathymetry inversion than the east *** inversion results from the combination of both components show a higher accuracy of bathymetry than that from a single *** difference between the error STD of the combination results and that of the gravity anomaly is less than 0.2 *** experiment’s results also show that the precision of the derived bathymetry can be improved if the parameters of linear regression are adjusted according to water *** summary,among the gravity field products used in this study,the gravity anomaly yielded the best performance in the bathymetry ***,since additional data and computation time are required to derive gravity anomalies from altimetric observations,the vertical defections can still be used as supplements,especially in areas where accurate vertical deflections exist.

A news picture geo-localization pipeline based on deep learning and street view images

Numerous news or event pictures are taken and shared on the internet every day that have abundant information worth being mined,but only a small fraction of them are *** visual content of the news image hints at clues of the geographical location because they are usually taken at the site of the incident,which provides a prerequisite for *** paper proposes an automated pipeline based on deep learning for the geo-localization of news pictures in a large-scale urban environment using geotagged street view images as a reference *** approach obtains location information by constructing an attention-based feature extraction ***,the image features are aggregated,and the candidate street view image results are retrieved by the selective matching kernel ***,the coordinates of the news images are estimated by the kernel density prediction *** pipeline is tested in the news pictures in Hong *** the comparison experiments,the proposed pipeline shows stable performance and generalizability in the large-scale urban *** addition,the performance analysis of components in the pipeline shows the ability to recognize localization features of partial areas in pictures and the effectiveness of the proposed solution in news picture geo-localization.

Research on the influence of outdoor trees on natural ventilation performance of an academic building

Planting trees around buildings has always been used as one of the most common viable landscaping strategies in ***,the impact of trees on natural ventilation inside the building has been neglected without *** emphasis of this study related to the impact of outdoor trees around the academic building on indoor *** simulations of the indoor wind environment of the academic building affected by trees were performed utilizing the k-εmodel with additional source *** numerical model was also validated by measured *** kinds of trees were selected,they are camphor and *** is a kind of broad-leaved tree and metasequoia is a kind of coniferous tree.26 simulation cases with six different tree canopy spacings were *** results showed that the outdoor trees had great influences on the natural ventilation performance of the academic *** with the case without the trees,the highest decrement in ventilation flow rate could be up to 31.97%in this *** the cases of classrooms with horizontal distribution,the ages of air of the classrooms became fresher with the increase of the canopy *** for the cases of classrooms with vertical distribution,the canopy spacing had fewer effects on the natural ventilation *** was also found that the blocking effects of camphor on indoor ventilation were higher than that of *** average ventilation flow rate in cases with metasequoia was increased by 14.89%compared to the cases with *** study could provide guidance for the layout design of trees around the building.

The high porosity and interconnectivity of scaffolds are critical for nutrient transmission in bone tis-sue engineering but usually lead to poor mechanical ***,a novel method that combines acid etching(AE)with selective laser sintering(SLS)and reaction bonding(RB)of Al particles is pro-posed to realize highly improved porosity,interconnectivity,mechanical strength,and in vitro bioactivity in 3D Al_(2)O_(3) *** controlling the oxidation and etching behaviors of Al particles,a tunable hol-low spherical feature can be obtained,which brings about the distinction in compressive response and fracture *** prevention of microcrack propagation on the in situ formed hollow spheres results in unique near elastic buckling rather than traditional brittle fracture,allowing an unparalleled compressive strength of 3.72±0.17 MPa at a high porosity of 87.7%±0.4%and pore interconnectivity of 94.7%±0.4%.Furthermore,scaffolds with an optimized pore structure and superhydrophilic surface show excellent cell proliferation and adhesion *** findings offer a promising strategy for the coexistence of out-standing mechanical and biological properties,with great potential for tissue engineering applications.

As massive underground projects have become popular in dense urban cities,a problem has arisen:which model predicts the best for Tunnel Boring Machine(TBM)performance in these tunneling projects?However,performance level of TBMs in complex geological conditions is still a great challenge for practitioners and *** the other hand,a reliable and accurate prediction of TBM performance is essential to planning an applicable tunnel construction *** performance of TBM is very difficult to estimate due to various geotechnical and geological factors and machine *** previously-proposed intelligent techniques in this field are mostly based on a single or base model with a low level of ***,this study aims to introduce a hybrid randomforest(RF)technique optimized by global harmony search with generalized oppositionbased learning(GOGHS)for forecasting TBM advance rate(AR).Optimizing the RF hyper-parameters in terms of,e.g.,tree number and maximum tree depth is the main objective of using the GOGHS-RF *** the modelling of this study,a comprehensive databasewith themost influential parameters onTBMtogetherwithTBM AR were used as input and output variables,*** examine the capability and power of the GOGHSRF model,three more hybrid models of particle swarm optimization-RF,genetic algorithm-RF and artificial bee colony-RF were also constructed to forecast TBM *** of the developed models was performed by calculating several performance indices,including determination coefficient(R2),root-mean-square-error(RMSE),and mean-absolute-percentage-error(MAPE).The results showed that theGOGHS-RF is a more accurate technique for estimatingTBMAR compared to the other applied *** newly-developedGOGHS-RFmodel enjoyed R2=0.9937 and 0.9844,respectively,for train and test stages,which are higher than a pre-developed ***,the importance of the input parameters was interpreted through the SHapley Additive exPlanations(SHA
