We d.termined.h.w mea.0}w voles, Microtus pennsylva.icus, respond.to th. ma.ks of th. top-, mid.le-, a.d.bottom-scent d.nors of a. over-ma.k. We tested.th. h.poth.sis th.t voles exposed.to a. over-ma.k will respond.preferentia.ly to th. scent ma.ks th.t were d.posited.more recently, th. scent ma.ks th.t were on top or nea. th. top of th. over-ma.k, compa.ed.to th. scent ma.ks th.t were d.posited.ea.lier or nea. th. bot- tom of th. over-ma.k. Voles spent more time investiga.ing th. ma.k of th. top-scent d.nor th.n th.t of th. eith.r th. mid.le- or bottom-scent d.nor. h.wever, ma.es but not fema.e voles spent more time investiga.ing th. mid.le-scent ma.k th.n th. bot- tom-scent ma.k. We a.so tested.th. h.poth.sis th.t voles eva.ua.e a.d.respond.to over-ma.ks d.fferently from single scent ma.ks. Voles spent more time investiga.ing th. ma.ks of th. top-, mid.le-, a.d.bottom-scent d.nors compa.ed.to scent ma.ks th.t were not pa.t of th. over-ma.k. Voles ca. d.stinguish.a.ong th. overla.ping scent ma.ks of th.ee scent d.nors a.d.sex d.fferences exist in th. va.ues th.y a.pea. to a.ta.h.to ea.h.of th.se scent ma.ks [current Zoology 57 （4）： 441-448, 2011 ].
