Atherosclerosis(AS)is the main underlyingpathology of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease(ASCVD),which is the leading cause of mortality inthe worldwide[1,2].Since the 19th century,Virchowhas already stated that AS is a chronic inflammatorystate induced by cholesterol.After that,it took at leastthree decades’worth of study to establish the multipleinflammatory pathways related to AS.

Dear Editor,This letter proposes a high-precision seafloor transponder positioning method based on the correction of sound speed profile(SSP)temporal variation.In the proposed method,the ocean sound speed error is modeled as the temporal variation of a background SSP,and the linearized expression of the acoustic travel time with respect to the sound speed coefficient is derived based on the ray acoustic model.Moreover,the proposed method introduces the constraint of acoustic ranging observations between seafloor transponders and determines the weights of travel time and ranging observations using Akaike’s Bayesian information criterion(ABIC)to reduce the positioning error caused by the correlation between sound speed and position parameters.The experimental results in the South China Sea show that the proposed method performs better than the global navigation satellite system-acoustic ranging combined positioning solver(GARPOS)[1],in terms of rigid distance errors and long baseline positioning accuracy.

L-theanine has been shown to have a therapeutic effect on depression.However,whether L-theanine has an excellent preventive effect on depression in children and adolescents and what its mechanism is have not been well explained.Given the complexity of the pathogenesis of depression,this study investigated the preventive effect and mechanism of L-theanine on depression in juvenile rats by combining serum and hippocampal metabolomic strategies.Behavioral tests,hippocampal tissue sections,and serum and hippocampal biochemical indexes were studied,and the results confirmed the preventive effect of Ltheanine.Untargeted reversed-phase liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and targeted hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry were developed to analyze the metabolism changes in the serum and hippocampus to screen for potential biomarkers related to L-theanine treatment.The results suggested that 28 abnormal metabolites in the serum and hippocampus that were considered as potential biomarkers returned to nearnormal levels after L-theanine administration.These biomarkers were involved in various metabolic pathways,mainly including amino acid metabolism and lipid metabolism.The levels of amino acids and neurotransmitters in the phenylalanine,tryptophan,and glutamic acid pathways were significantly reduced after L-theanine administration compared with chronic unpredictable mild stress-induced rats.In summary,L-theanine had a significant preventive effect on depression and achieved its preventive results on depression by regulating various aspects of the body,such as amino acids,lipids,and inflammation.This research systematically analyzed the mechanism of L-theanine in preventing depression and laid the foundation for applying L-theanine to prevent depression in children and adolescents.

Mitochondrial diseases are a group of inherited or acquired metabolic disorders caused by mitochondrial dysfunction which may affect almost all the organs in the body and present at any age.However,no satisfactory therapeutic strategies have been available for mitochondrial diseases so far.Mitochondrial transplantation is a burgeoning approach for treatment of mitochondrial diseases by recovery of dysfunctional mitochondria in defective cells using isolated functional mitochondria.Many models of mitochondrial transplantation in cells,animals,and patients have proved effective via various routes of mitochondrial delivery.This review presents different techniques used in mitochondrial isolation and delivery,mechanisms of mitochondrial internalization and consequences of mitochondrial transplantation,along with challenges for clinical application.Despite some unknowns and challenges,mitochondrial transplantation would provide an innovative approach for mitochondrial medicine.

Silyl enol ethers are often obtained when the lithium enolates are trapped with chlorosilanes.Herein,we report a general method for the regio-and diasteroselective C-silylation of enolate enabled by theβ-boronyl group.The formation of five-membered chelation intermediate is key to the C-selective silylation and anti-selectivity.The operationally simple protocol provides a general and predictable access to theα-silylated esters.The synthetic versatility of the boron-silicon bifunctional products was demonstrated by down-stream transformations.

The electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia(ENRA)provides an efficient approach to remove nitrate pollution and achieve ammonia production simultaneously.Herein,inspired by bio-enzyme in denitrifying bacteria,a carbon-coated nickel phosphide(NiPC)nanosheet derived from metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)is proposed as an efficient catalyst for ENRA.Through electron engineering,controllable Niδ+in nickel phosphide is achieved by regulating the degree of phosphating,which enhances its activity for the hydrogenation of nitrate.As the result,Niδ+becomes one of dominating factors determining the efficiency of the ENRA reaction in nickel phosphide.The optimal NiPC catalyst exhibits impressive property toward ENRA:NH_(4)^(+)Faraday efficiency of 96.68%,NH4+selectivity of 99.04%,and nitrate conversion rate of 90.43%under low nitrate concentration(200 mg·L^(−1)).This work opens a new avenue for the design of next-generation catalysts through electron engineering for ENRA.

Prediction of Th17/Treg cell balance on length of stay in intensive care units of patients with sepsis

Background Prolonged length of stay(LOS)of sepsis can drain a hospital's material and human resources.This study investigated the correlations between T helper type 17(Th17)and regulatory T(Treg)balance with LOS in sepsis.Methods A prospective clinical observational study was designed in Changhai Hospital affiliated to Naval Medical University in Shanghai,China,from January to October 2020.The patients diagnosed with sepsis and who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited and whether the levels of cytokines,procalcitonin,subtypes,and biomarkers of T cells in the peripheral blood were detected.We analyzed the correlation between these and LOS.Results Sixty septic patients were classified into two groups according to whether their intensive care unit(ICU)stay exceeded 14 days.The patients with LOS≥14 days were older([72.6±7.5]years vs.[63.3±10.4]years,P=0.015)and had higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA)(median[interquartile range]:6.5[5.0–11.0]vs.4.0[3.0–6.0],P=0.001)and higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation(APACHE)II scores(16.0[13.0–21.0]vs.8.5[7.0–14.0],P=0.001).There was no difference in other demographic characteristics and cytokines,interleukin-6,tumor necrosis factor-α,and interleukin-10 between the two groups.The Th17/Treg ratio of sepsis with LOS<14 days was considerably lower(0.48[0.38–0.56]vs.0.69[0.51–0.98],P=0.001).For patients with LOS≥14 days,the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the Th17/Treg ratio was 0.766.It improved to 0.840 and 0.850 when combined with the SOFA and APACHE II scores,respectively.Conclusions The Th17/Treg ratio was proportional to septic severity and can be used as a potential predictor of ICU stay in sepsis,presenting a new option for ICU practitioners to better care for patients with sepsis.

Based on the number of customers and the server’s workload,this paper proposes a modified Min(N,D)-policy and discusses an M/G/1 queueing model with delayed randomized multiple vacations under such a policy.Applying the well-known stochastic decomposition property of the steady-state queue size,the probability generating function of the steady-state queue length distribution is obtained.Moreover,the explicit expressions of the expected queue length and the additional queue length distribution are derived by some algebraic manipulations.Finally,employing the renewal reward theorem,the explicit expression of the long-run expected cost per unit time is given.Furthermore,we analyze the optimal policy for economizing the expected cost and compare the optimal Min(N,D)-policy with the optimal N-policy and the optimal D-policy by using numerical examples.

In this paper, a stochastic model of plague is first studied by subspace identification. First, the discrete model of plague is obtained based on the classical model. The corresponding stochastic model is proposed for the existence of stochastic disturbances. Second, for the model, the parameter matrices and noise intensity are obtained. Finally, the simulations of the model show that the subspace identification is more precise than least square method.

Synergistic cytotoxicity of binary combinations of inorganic and organic disinfection byproducts assessed by real-time cell analysis

Chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and ozone are widely used as disinfectants in drinking water treatments. However, the combined use of different disinfectants can result in the formation of various organic and inorganic disinfection byproducts(DBPs). The toxic interactions, including synergism, addition, and antagonism, among the complex DBPs are still unclear. In this study, we established and verified a real-time cell analysis(RTCA) method for cytotoxicity measurement on Chinese hamster ovary(CHO) cell. Using this convenient and accurate method, we assessed the cytotoxicity of a series of binary combinations consisting of one of the 3 inorganic DBPs(chlorite, chlorate, and bromate) and one of the 32 regulated and emerging organic DBPs. The combination index(CI) of each combination was calculated and evaluated by isobolographic analysis to reflect the toxic interactions. The results confirmed the synergistic effect on cytotoxicity in the binary combinations consisting of chlorite and one of the 5 organic DBPs(2 iodinated DBPs(I-DBPs) and 3 brominated DBPs(Br-DBPs)), chlorate and one of the 4 organic DBPs(3 aromatic DBPs and dibromoacetonitrile), and bromate and one of the 3 organic DBPs(2 I-DBPs and dibromoacetic acid). The possible synergism mechanism of organic DBPs on the inorganic ones may be attributed to the influence of organic DBPs on cell membrane and cell antioxidant system. This study revealed the toxic interactions among organic and inorganic DBPs, and emphasized the latent adverse outcomes in the combined use of different disinfectants.
