Background Soil erosion in Ethiopian highlands is highly consistent with land use/land cover(LULC)changes that are associated with deforestation and a decline in ***,identifying soil erosion-prone areas and quantifying soil loss in rugged terrains and various agroecologies due to LULC changes have not been dedicated to scientific ***,we quantified the impacts of spatiotemporal LULC changes on soil loss across agroecologies and slope categories using GIS and RUSLE model from 1985 to 2021 in Zoa watershed,southwest ***,prioritizing erosion severity risks at sub-watersheds and quantifying temporal sediment yield is essential for better conservation *** images,rainfall,Digital Elevation Model,and soil data were obtained from field observations and secondary *** Bareland and farmland have been expanding at the expense of other land use *** annual soil loss in the watershed ranged from 0 to 113.21 t ha^(-1) year^(-1),0 to 163.16 t ha^(-1) year^(-1),and 0 to 194.58 t ha^(-1) year^(-1)with a mean annual soil loss of 21.07,29.35 and 40.93 t ha^(-1) year^(-1) in 1985,2000,and 2021,*** LULC classes,the highest soil loss was generated from bareland(31.73 t ha^(-1) year^(-1))and farmland(27.08 t ha^(-1) year^(-1))in 1985 later upsurged to 35.52 t ha^(-1) year^(-1)and 59.91 t ha^(-1) year^(-1) in 2021,respectively,due to the maximum susceptibility of soil erosion risks from unprotected *** results also revealed that the lowland agroecology generated the highest mean soil loss of 24.05 t ha^(-1) year^(-1)in 1985,39.74 t ha^(-1) year^(-1) in 2000,and increased to 57.55 t ha^(-1) year^(-1)in *** the slope categories,the highest and most excruciating soil loss was engendered from steep(35.55–60.78 t ha–1 year–1)and very steep(52.48–72.69 t ha^(-1) year^(-1))slope terrains during 1985–*** northwestern part of the watershed is the most erosion-prone area which is now ex

Status of Root-Knot Nematode (MeloidogyneSpecies) and Fusarium Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum) Disease Complex on Tomato (Solanum lycopersicumL.) in the Central Rift Valley, Ethiopia

Development of diseases in cultivated crops depends on the complex interrelationship among host, pathogen and prevailing environmental conditions. In nature, plants are rarely, if ever, subject to the influence of only one potential pathogen and this is especially true of soil-borne pathogens like fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum). In the present study, the co-occurrence of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne species) and Fusarium oxysporum ***. lycopersici was surveyed in the main tomato growing areas of the central rift valley of Ethiopia. Mineral and organic samples were collected from 59 farmlands representing five districts and two commercial farms during the main cropping season of 2017. Cultural, morphological and virulence analysis of these pathogens revealed their co-existence. Out of 59 samples, 39% were found infected with the disease complex [Meloilodogyne species.* Fusarium oxysporum ***. lycopesici (FOL)]. Off which, 16.9% and 6.8% resulted from concomitant infection of Meloidogyne incognita* FOL and Meloidogyne javanica* FOL, respectively. The percent prevalence of the disease complex ranged between 27.3% and 60%. The co-occurrence of these pathogens within a single host plant within the same ecological niche will indicate the probability of any type of interaction between each other. Therefore, subsequent research studies on their nature of interaction should be done in the future.

Assessment of naked mole-rat distribution and threats in Eastern Ethiopia

Objective:To identify the distribution,threats and community attitudes towards naked mole-rat in Eastern ***:Data were collected through direct observation and interview and Chi-square at 95%confidence interval was used for significance ***:Naked mole-rat was identified in Fafan,City/Shinele,Eastern Hararghe Zone and Dire Dawa *** main threats of naked mole-rat identified were agricultural expansion,human killing and lack of *** a total of 100 respondents,92%of them considered naked mole-rat as pest as a result that 46%of them participated in direct *** rate significantly affects the willingness to participate in the conservation of naked mole-rat(χ^(2)=7.478,df=1,P<0.05).From a total of 26%respondents who did not show the willingness to participate in the conservation,80.8%of them were ***:Naked mole-rat is fairly common in many of the study ***,rapid shift from nomadic life style to cultivation of crops and lacks of awareness were the main threats of naked ***,since there is no conservation action currently,further comprehensive study is required to design conservation plan for this species.

Objective:To describe the population status,abundance and diversity of amphibians found in Guguftu highland and Chefa ***:The present study dealed with amphibian diversity at Guguftu highland and Chefa wetland during the period of August 2015 to September *** line and visual encounter survey methods were used in careful visual estimation and amphibians were recorded in all possible habitats of the study ***:The total of 251 individuals of amphibians within 12 species grouped into 5 families were recorded in the Guguftu highland and Chefa *** wetland had the highest species abundance as well as richness with a total of 231 individuals falling in 11 ***:This study reveals that the Chefa wetland is rich in amphibian diversity and supports many more *** studies are needed on molecular basis,population structure,habitat use by amphibians for better understanding and also imposing several conservation strategies in Chefa wetland.

Peanut is a worldwide oilseed crop and the need to assess germplasm in a non-destructive manner is important for seed nutritional *** this study,Near Infrared Spectroscopy(NIRS)was applied to rapidly assess germplasm variability from whole seed of 699 samples,field-collected and assembled in four genetic and environmentbased sets:one set of 300 varieties of a core-collection and three sets of 133 genotypes of an interspecific population,evaluated in three environments in a large spatial scale of two countries,Mbalmayo and Bafia in Cameroon and Nioro in Senegal,under rainfed *** elemental spectra were gathered on six subsets of seeds of each sample,after three rotation scans,with a spectral resolution of 16 cm-1over the spectral range of867 nm to 2530 *** were then processed by principal component analysis(PCA)coupled with Partial least squares-discriminant analysis(PLS-DA).As results,a huge variability was found between varieties and genotypes for all NIR wavelength within and between *** magnitude of genetic variation was particularly observed at 11 relevant wavelengths such as 1723 nm,usually related to oil content and fatty acid *** yielded the most chemical attributes in three significant PCs(i.e.,eigenvalues>10),which together captured 93%of the total variation,revealing genetic and environment structure of varieties and genotypes into four clusters,corresponding to the four samples *** pattern of genetic variability of the interspecific population covers,remarkably half of spectrum of the core-collection,turning out to be the ***,a PLS-DA model was developed and a strong accuracy of 99.6%was achieved for the four sets,aiming to classify each seed sample according to environment *** confusion matrix achieved for the two sets of Bafia and Nioro showed 100%of instances classified correctly with 100%at both sensitivity and specificity,confirming that their seed quality was different f

Objective To compare the effects of human breast milk with those of chlorhexidine and the dry method on umbilical cord separation in *** This open-label 3-arm nonrandomized pilot clinical trial was conducted among 45 neonates(15 in each arm)with more than 630 home *** a standard cord cut,human breast milk,chlorhexidine,or nothing was applied once per day for 7 *** primary outcome was the duration of cord separation,while the secondary outcomes were umbilical cord infection,neonatal fever,jaundice,feeding and breathing difficulty,and persistent *** There were statistically significant differences in the time-to-cord separation between the human breast milk group and the chlorhexidine(P<0.001)and dry alone(P=0.038)*** to those of chlorhexidine,the rates of cord separation among human breast milk and the dry-alone group were 16.02,with 95%confidence intervals(3.81,37.43;P<0.001)and 3.15(0.99,10.00;P=0.052),***(6.7%)cord site infection was observed in the dry-alone groups *** This community-label study indicated that human breast milk application significantly shortened the length of umbilical cord separation time compared to chlorhexidine and dry methods.A large-scale randomized controlled trial is needed to confirm these results.

孟莫克SULFOX提供的硫酸工艺技术被选择为位于美国德州奥德萨的清洁能源煤气化项目(TCEP)的配套工艺。MECS SULFOX是一家由MECS公司和Kanzler Verfahrenstechnik GmbH(KVT)公司共同组建的合资公司,旨在向市场提供一种传统超级克劳斯工艺的替代技术。在TCEP项目中,SULFOX装置将处理来自气化炉下游低温甲醇洗装置的含硫化氢(HS)尾气,将其转化成为93%浓度的商品级硫酸用于当地市场销售,硫酸的产能为55短吨,天。SULFOX工艺简单,设备紧凑,采用模块化设计,装置的操作弹性很大,并可保证"超低"的酸雾排放指标。酸浓缩管组部分的高机械强度设计最大限度的减少了装置的维修成本。由于SULFOX装置高效的废热回收和蒸汽产率,相比传统克劳斯装置,运行SULFOX具有非常高的经济效益。配合SULFOX装置,TCEP项目中的整体煤气化联合循环发电(IGCC)装置可以发电400MW,其中部分电力用于驱动现场的动设备,生产农用化肥生产所需的合成氨,尿素以及商品级硫酸;余下电量并入德克萨斯州电网,其电价不高于普通电价。TCEP项目的碳捕集率将达到90%。平均每小时每兆瓦产生的二氧化碳排放值将远远低于天然气火电厂和目前最新的美国联邦气候立法属所规定的适用于加利福尼亚州和华盛顿州的二氧化碳排放标准。TCEP项目还得到了美国能源部洁净煤发电2010计划授予的4.5亿美元的资助。
