This article introduces a novel,ultrawideband(UWB)planar monopole antenna printed on Roger RT/5880 substrate in a compact size for small Internet of Things(IoT)*** total electrical dimensions of the proposed compact UWB antenna are 0.19λo×0.215λo×0.0196λo with the overall physical sizes of 15 mm×17 mm×1.548 mm at the lower resonance frequency of 3.8 *** planar monopole antenna is fed through the linearly tapered microstrip line on a partially structured ground plane to achieve optimum impedance matching for UWB *** proposed compact UWB antenna has an operation bandwidth of 9.53 GHz from 3.026 GHz up to 12.556 GHz at−10 dB return loss with a fractional bandwidth(FBW)of about 122%.The numerically computed and experimentally measured results agree well in between.A detailed time-domain analysis is additionally accomplished to verify the radiation efficiency of the proposed antenna design for the ultra-wideband signal *** fabricated prototype of a compact UWB antenna exhibits an omnidirectional radiation pattern with the low peak measured gain required of 2.55 dBi at 10 GHz and promising radiation efficiency of 90%.The proposed compact planar antenna has technical potential to be utilized in UWB and IoT applications.

Modeling surface fuels moisture content in Pinus brutia stands

Fuel moisture content is an important variable for forest fires because it affects fuel ignition and fire behavior. In order to accurately predict fuel ignition potential, fuel moisture content must be assessed by evaluating fire spread, fireline intensity and fuel *** objective here is to model moisture content of surface fuels in normally stocked Calabrian pine(Pinus brutia Ten.) stands in relation to weather conditions, namely temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed in the Mugla province of Turkey. All surface fuels were categorized according to diameter classes and fuel types. Six fuel categories were defined: these were 0–0.3, 0.3–0.6, and0.6–1 cm diameter classes, and cone, surface litter, and duff. Plastic containers 15 9 20 cm in size with 1 9 1 mm mesh size were used. Samples were taken from 09:00 to19:00 h and weighed every 2 h with 0.01 g precision for10 days in August. At the end of the study, samples were taken to the laboratory, oven-dried at 105 °C for 24 h and weighed to obtain fuel-moisture contents. Weather measurements were taken from a fully automated weather station set up at the study site prior to the study. Correlation and regression analyses were carried out and models were developed to predict fuel moisture contents for desorption and adsorption phase for each fuel type categories. Practical fuel moisture prediction models were developed for dry period. Models were developed that performed well with reasonable accuracy, explaining up to 92 and 95.6%of the variability in fuel-moisture contents for desorption and adsorption phases, respectively. Validation of the models were conducted using an independent data set and known fuel moisture prediction models. The predictive power of the models was satisfactory with mean absolute error values being 1.48 and 1.02 for desorption and adsorption as compared to the 2.05 and 1.60 values for the Van Wagner's hourly litter moisture content prediction model. The higher frequency of varicocele in men with infertility has drawn attention and resulted in increased research at the molecular level towards treatments. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-related apoptosis-inducing ligand （TRAIL） and its receptors in varicocele-induced testicular dysfunction in an experimental rat model. The rats were divided into three groups： control, sham and varicocele. Varicoceles in rats were induced by partial ligation of the left renal vein and left testes. The rats were analyzed 13 weeks after surgery. The degree of DNA fragmentation within cells in the testis was determined using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end labeling （TUNEL） assay. Tubule degeneration was evaluated using the Johnsen score. The expression of TRAIL and its receptors was detected by immunohistochemical and Western blotting techniques. The apoptotic index, Johnsen score and the expression of TRAIL and TRAIL receptors were examined. The data are presented as the mean-.＋s.d, and were analyzed using computer software. The KruskaI-Wallis and Dunn＇s multiple comparison tests were used in the statistical analyses. The germ cell apoptotic index was increased in rats with varicoceles when compared with the sham and control groups （P=0.0031）. The Johnsen score was significantly decreased in the varicocele group when compared with the sham and control groups （P〈O.O001）. Immunohistochemical and Western blotting analyses showed that after varicocele induction, the expression of TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R4 in germ cells was increased and the expression of TRAIL-R2 was decreased. There are no significant differences among the groups in terms of TRAIL and TRAIL-R3 receptor expression. The results of this study indicate that TRAIL and its receptors may have a potential role in the pathogenesis of varicocele-induced testicular dysfunction.

Trabeculectomy with large area mitomycin-C application as a first-line treatment in advanced glaucoma: retrospective review

AIM: To evaluate the outcomes of trabeculectomy with large area mitomycin-C(MMC) application as a first line treatment in advanced glaucoma. ·METHODS: The records of 55 patients with severe visual field defects undergoing trabeculectomy were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were classified as first-line therapy to either early trabeculectomy(initial trabeculectomy-Group 1) or long term medical therapy followed by trabeculectomy(primary trabeculectomy-Group 2). Trabeculectomy was performed with large-area MMC application. Intraocular pressure(IOP) values,visual acuities,mean deviations,morphology and function of the blebs,necessity for anti-glaucomatous medications and surgical complications were reported. ·RESULTS: There were 20 eyes of 18 patients in Group 1 and 37 eyes of 37 patients in Group 2. The mean preoperative IOPs in Groups 1 and 2 were 40.2±10.0mmHg(27-68mmHg) and 29.0±4.4mmHg(21-41mmHg),respectively(P=0.001). Average preoperative mean deviations(MD) in Groups 1 and 2 were 17.4±2.8dB(13.3-23dB) and 17.9± 2.4dB(13.7-23.2dB),respectively(P=0.441). Postoperative IOPs significantly decreased and were comparable in both Groups. The mean number of medications was significantly higher in Group 2(P =0.005). No cystic bleb formation was observed in Group 1,whereas 4 patients from Group 2(10.8%) developed cystic bleb(P =0.040). No visually devastating complication has occurred in both Groups. ·CONCLUSION: Initial trabeculectomy with large areaMMC application might be applied in patients with advanced glaucoma with low complication rates. Long-term topically applied anti-glaucomatous medications seem to increase the risk of cystic bleb formation.

In response to China’s new“people-oriented urbanization”strategy,investigating the current integration situation of rural-to-urban migrants(RUMs)in cities is ***,existing studies have not focused on their subjective willingness and adaptive ***,the mechanism of RUMs’urban integration has not been fully *** conceptual framework of vulnerability,which originated from the discipline of natural hazards,is perfectly constructive to address these *** consists of three main components,including exposure,sensitivity,and adaptive *** index has been constructed and calculated by combining the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)and Delphi *** spatial pattern of vulnerability level is also analyzed with geographic information system(GIS).Furthermore,the underlying mechanism of vulnerability and its associated factors are investigated with the principle component *** major conclusions are ***,the vulnerability level of the RUMs to social exclusion presents a heterogeneous pattern between inland and coastal cities in Shandong ***,while the exposure and sensitivity level of each city correlate spatially with the vulnerability level,RUMs’adaptive capacity further moderates ***,the level of urban development is revealed to be a key factor influencing *** study offers meaningful references to promote inclusive urbanization and sustainable urban development.

Design and Realization of Broadband Active Inductor Based Band Pass Filter

With the latest developments in the wireless communication systems, the alternative design methodologies are required for the broadband design of microwave components. In this paper, a compact broad band pass filter(BPF) design is introduced through the microwave design technique based on the active inductor(AIN) with the numerical computation and experimental measurement studies. The proposed AIN based BPF has operating frequency band extending from 0.8 GHz to 2.7GHz in compact size with high selectivity in comparison to conventional LC based BPF. The experimental measurement results agree well with the numerical computation results. The proposed AIN based BPF design has technical capability to be conveniently tuned to operate at different frequency bands.

Apoptosis in the iris and trabecular meshwork of medically treated and untreated primary open angle glaucoma patients

AIM:To compare the trabecular meshwork(TM)and iris apoptosis of treated and untreated primary open angle glaucoma(POAG)***:Eight treatment-naive,newly diagnosed(group 1)and 11 medlcaiy treated(group 2)patients with POAG were included in the *** patient underwent a limbus-based *** TM and peripheral iris specimens were dissected out and were snap-frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at-80t until they were *** in each group was assesed by TUNEL ***:The mean patient age was 60.6±5.8 years(53-68 years)vs 58.9±8.9 years(47-70 years)in group 1and group 2(P=0.859).The mean treatment time in group 2 was 22.2±7.3 months(12-34 months).Apoptotic indexes in TM and iris were significantly higher in POAG patients using medication(group 2)compared to treatment-naive POAG patients(group 1)(P=0.004,0.015;respectively).CONCLUSION:Long term administration of topical antiglaucoma medications causes additional toxic effects on TM.

Anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors are effective in the treatment of various inflammatory rheumatic conditions. Increased risks of serious infections are the major issues concerning the long-term safety of these agents. We present a case of a young male Behcet’s patient whose disease was complicated by cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis. Colitis started 10 d after the third Infliximab dose and responded to the cessation of TNF blocking treatment and administration of ganciclovir. Tumor necrosis factor alpha and interferon gamma act at several levels in combating viral *** infections should be kept in mind and included in the differential diagnosis of severe gastrointestinal symptoms in patients receiving anti-TNF agents.

Effects of glutamine and curcumin on bacterial translocation in jaundiced rats

AIM: To investigate the effect of curcumin on bacterial translocation and oxidative damage in an obstructive jaundice model and compare the results to glutamine, an agent known to be effective and clinically used. METHODS: Twenty-four female Wistar-Albino rats, weighing 200-250 g, were randomly divided into three groups (8 in each group). After ligation of the common bile duct in all animals, GroupⅠ received oral normal saline, Group Ⅱ received oral glutamine and Group Ⅲ received oral curcumin for seven days. Blood samples via cardiac puncture, tissue samples (terminal ileum, liver and mesenteric lymph node) and peritoneal fluid were obtained from the animals at the time of death to investigate bacterial translocation and oxidative damage. RESULTS: We observed that both glutamine and curcumin reduced bacterial translocation in blood, hepatocellular damage, plasma cytokine levels, oxidative tissue damage and apoptosis significantly compared to the control group. Additionally, glutamine showed protective effects on ileal epithelium and reduced villus atrophy. CONCLUSION: On the basis of these findings, both curcumin and glutamine are thought to be effective in preventing or reducing bacterial translocation and oxidative damage in obstructive jaundice.
