Verbal Communication in HIV-1 Patients： A New Perspective on the study of Cognitive Disorders

The aims were：（1） to study verbal communication skills presenting with verbal communication deficits by applying the MEC in HIV-1 patients, and （2） to analyze the proportion of patients Protocol. The authors evaluated 20 patients over 18 years of age HIV-1 positive; native speakers of spanish; without alterations in language acquisition, reading, writing or history of neurological or psychiatric disease; patients undergoing antiretroviral treatment （not efavirenz） with viral load 〉 50 copies/mL, and patients not undergoing treatment. Their verbal communication abilities were evaluated with Protocol MEC. The results demonstrate that some of the skills evaluated are more vulnerable in HIV-1 patients. The tasks that showed the most frequent and systematic deficits among patients were discourse-level tasks and those that evaluate lexical semantic processing. The authors compared patients＇ performances with the ＂cut-off＇. The scores were turned into score Z. A hierarchic cluster analysis was carried out to identify subgroups with different profiles according to the areas that were affected. The detection of communication deficit profiles in HIV-1 patients would be the starting point for the identification of disorders and the admission of the patients to health care system. This research constitutes an initial approach towards the identification of clinical profiles among HIV-1 patients.

The mass spectral fragmentation of thiosemicarbazones synthesized from acetophenones has been studied by CG/Ms. These carbonyl compounds exhibit chromatographic peaks which are not observed in aliphatic analogues or those synthesized from aldehydes. The analysis of the corresponding spectra has allowed structural assignment to the dimerization of gas phase neutral fragments. Theoretical calculations (DFT level) also provide evidence to support the experimental observations.

The majority of women will experience some or most of the menopause symptoms in their life. Thais time in women’s life is associated with a reduction in estrogen levels which leads to physiological changes that affect different organ systems. In the urogenital tract, these changes usually cause vulvar and vaginal atrophy, affecting a vaginal health of women and decreasing their quality of life. Also, there is a reduction in vaginal moisture and loss of tissue elasticity. Besides, other organ systems are involved and they can also negatively impact normal vaginal physiology. These evolutional changes frequently lead to bothersome symptoms that can negatively impact a woman’s vaginal health and the quality of life. The role of pelvic floor physiotherapy is to improve the tone and strength of the muscle fibres in order to achieve the increase of motor units, improve muscle elasticity and to increase the muscle mass which will help to alleviate menopause symptoms.

Model for the Vaccination against the Poliomyelitis

The poliomyelitis is an acute infection produced by the polio virus that affects the human central nervous system. It is transmitted by fecal-oral and respiratory *** are two types of vaccine, OPV （live attenuated virus） and IPV （inactivated polio virus）. Currently, there is a plan of vaccination until the age of 5 with OPV. The children vaccinated expel a virus （derived from the vaccine） to the environment, and some of the people that have oral contact with them, get vaccinated by the herd behavior. Nevertheless, taking into account the lately observed facts about the reversion to virulence of the oral polio vaccine during its circulation in the environment, a change in the current vaccination schedule is being contemplated, where the oral polio vaccine can be replaced by the inactivated vaccine. Nowadays, In Colombia the inactivated oral polio vaccine is recommended for children presenting immune deficiency who are vaccinated with IPV. These children do not expel poliovirus to the environment. This work presents a mathematical model that describes the dynamics of the infection in a population where the two types of vaccination are carried out. The population is divided into two groups of age and Michaelis-Menten interactions. Different strategies of vaccination are simulated and analyzed.

Primary Care Practitioners’ Views on the Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors Associated with Alginate-Antacids for Better Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease symptom Control: Results of a National survey in spain

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a prevalent disease in Western countries. Despite effective treatment modalities, in some patients total symptom control is not achieved in clinical practice. A cross-sectional study was designed to assess primary care practitioners’ views on the effectiveness of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) as monotherapy in the control of the most common symptoms of GERD (heartburn and regurgitation), as well as to determine the level of implementation of the “combined therapy” (PPI + alginate-antacids). Methods: A questionnaire on different aspects of the management of GERD was completed by 1491 primary care physicians. The questionnaire was composed of 11 close-ended questions with one-choice answer, with a total of 52 items, covering the main data from patients presenting with GERD. Results: Treatment with PPI alone was mostly considered insufficient for the control of GERD symptoms. The combined treatment of PPI + alginate-antacids was used for 37% and 21% of physicians for treating heart-burn and regurgitation, respectively. A better control of symptoms, an increase in the onset of action and to reduce nocturnal acid breakthrough were the most frequently argued reasons for the use of PPI + alginate-antacids. A high percentage of participants believed that treatment with PPI alone was insufficient for the control of symptoms and 39.8% of physicians reported the persistence of heartburn, 38.6% the persistence of regurgitation and 43.2% the persistence of epigastric discomfort in more than 25% of their patients treated with PPI as monotherapy. The most common schedule for the use of the antacid medication was on demand. Conclusions: spanish primary care physicians consider that a high proportion of GERD patients continue to suffer from symptoms during PPI treatment alone. Palm Forest Landscape in Castillos (Rocha, Uruguay): Contributions to the Design of a Conservation Area

Butia palm forests are considered unique due to their aesthetic value, high biodiversity level and historical, archaeological and cultural value. The lack of regeneration of butia palms caused by cattle overgrazing and natural grasslands replacement by agriculture endangers these palm forests. The aim of this work is to provide information for the proposal of a conservation area in this rural landscape within the framework of sustainable development. This work was developed within the context of a Geographic Information system with thematic information on palm forest density levels, soils, land use aptitude and rural registers. Field surveys were conducted to record the presence of plant species and genetic resources in different vegetation units. The main category of soil cover was natural grasslands, followed by native forests, wetlands and palm forests. Palm forests grow mainly on soil units with poor to rather poor drainage and on arable or non-arable lands under special conditions. We identified 212 farms where the palm forest is found, a high diversity of vegetation units, the presence of 302 native taxa of plants and a significant number of plant genetic resources for various uses. For the designation of a conservation area, we propose 20 priority farms that will ensure that palm forests are well represented regarding ecosystem diversity. We consider the creation of a Protected Landscape, a state Park or a GIAHs to be the best alternatives so as to protect this unique multifunctional landscape.

CagA EPIYA polymorphisms in Colombian Helicobacter pylori strains and their influence on disease-associated cellular responses

AIM: To investigate the influence of the CagA diversity in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori ) strains from Colombia on the host cell biology. METHODs: Eighty-four H. pylori-cagA positive strains with different Glu-Pro-Ile-Tyr-Ala (EPIYA) motifs patterns, isolated from patients with gastritis (n=17), atrophic gastritis (n=17), duodenal ulcer (n=16), intestinal metaplasia (n=16) and gastric cancer (n=18), were included. To determine the integrity of the cag pathogenicity island (cag PAI) we evaluated the presence of cagA, cagT, cagE, and cag10 genes by polymerase chain reaction. AGs gastric epithelial cellswere infected with each strain and assayed for translo-cation and tyrosine phosphorylation of CagA by western blot, secretion of interleukin-8 (IL-8) by enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay after taking supernatants from cocultures and cell elongation induction. For cell elongation quantification, coculture photographs were taken and the proportion of "hummingbird" cells (>15 μm) was determined. REsULTs: Overall 72% (60/84) of the strains were found to harbor a functional cag PAI. Levels of phos-phorylated CagA were significantly higher for isolates from duodenal ulcer than the ones in strains from gas-tritis, atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer (49.1% ± 23.1% vs 21.1% ± 19.5%, P s 26.2%±14.8%, Ps 21.5% ± 19.5%, Ps 29.5% ± 27.1%, P spectively). We observed variable IL-8 expression levels ranging from 0 to 810 pg/mL and from 8.8 to 1442 pg/mL at 6 h and 30 h post-infection, respectively. cagPAI-defective strains did not induce detectable levels of IL-8 at 6 h post-infection. At 30 h post-infection all strains induced IL-8 expression in AGs cells, although cagPAI-defective strains induced significantly lower levels of IL-8 than strains with a functional cagPAI (57.1 ± 56.6 pg/mL vs 513.6 ± 338.6 pg/mL,P serve differences in the extent of cell

Background:Universal vaccination for hepatitis B virus(HBV)and migratory movements have changed the demographic characteristics of this disease in spain and in ***,we evaluated the characteristics of the disease and the possible differences according to origin(immigrants vs non-immigrants)and access to ***:This is a multicenter cross-sectional study(June 2014 to May 2015)in which outpatients with a positive HBsAg were seen and followed in four Hepatology *** and clinical data and indication and access to treatment were collected in two different regions of Catalonia(spain)where there are no barriers to treatment due to a comprehensive coverage under the National Health ***:A total of 951 patients were evaluated(48.1%men).Of these,46.6%were immigrants(58.7%of them were born in Africa)and were significantly younger compared to *** proportions of patients with alcohol consumption,being overweight,and other indicators of metabolic co-morbidities were significantly higher in *** the 937 patients receiving HBeAg examination,91.7%were *** HBeAg-positive infection was significantly higher in immigrants(3.9%vs 0.6%,P=0.001)and chronic HBeAg-negative hepatitis was higher non-immigrants(31.7%vs 21.4%,Ps the proportion of patients who met treatment criteria significantly higher among nonimmigrants(38.4%vs 29.2%,P=0.003),but also the proportion of those with indication of effectively receiving therapy at the time of data collection(83.2%vs 57.8%,Psions:The immigrant population with HBV is younger and has a lower prevalence of metabolic co-morbidities and a higher frequency of chronic HBeAg *** having access to care and an indication for treatment,some do not get adequately treated due to several factors including local adaptation that precludes access to treatment.

Morphologic changes due to human chorionic gonadotropin in the rat testis: Role of vascular endothelial growth factor

Introduction: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) has an important role in the regulation of reproductive system and a high capacity to stimulate angiogenesis by secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). It could be also used for medical treatment of cryptorchidism, as it stimulates Leydig cells to produce testosterone, but its use has been discussed. Aim of the study was to evaluate the testicular morphological changes due to cyclic administration of hCG possibly related to VEGF effect. Methods: 80 pre-puberal male sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided in two groups hCG (50 U/I/ Kg) (n = 55/s) and placebo (n = 25/C) treated. The animals were sacrificed respectively after one (s1 n = 10;C1 n = 5), two (s2 n = 10;C2 n = 5) and three weeks of hCG or placebo treatment (s3 n = 35;C3 n = 15);a blood serum was obtained for evaluation of plasmatic testosterone. The testis, prostates, epididymides and seminal vesicles were drawn and weighted. specimens were fixed in formalin and coloured by hematoxylin-eosin. Morphometric analysis of Leydig cell number, nuclear area and perimeter was carried out. Immunoistochemistry for VEGF has been performed with the avidin-biotin peroxidase technique. statistical differences between groups, each of different age, were calculating using student’s T-test. Results: After the first week of hCG treatment it has been observed an increased testicular weight and volume (+/﹣6%) in experimental respect to control group. This result was not observed after the second and third week of treatment. significant variations were also observed in the mean prostate weight, whereas mean seminal vesicles weight was significant in the s2 and s3 groups respect to control. In the hCG treated rats it has been observed a poor differentiation of the seminiferous epithelium, with high Leydig cell evidence and increased intertubular eosinophilic material.
