Exploring the relationship-oriented spaces of social networks and depressive symptoms among older adults

The Republic of Korea has the highest suicide rate of older population among OECD countries,and depression is the prevailing factor.While it is well-known that the urban physical environment affects mental health,research on the physical characteristics of spaces remains limited.This study aims to explore relationship-oriented space characteristics that can form social networks and reduce depressive symptoms in older adults.After analyzing the differences in social interaction spaces between high-density and low-density areas for older adults in Seoul,we identified social interaction spaces(parks and traditional markets)that are frequently used based on on-site interview results.Two areas were selected for the questionnaire surveys.The main findings revealed that older adults living in areas with diverse spatial planning and close physical relationships between parks and traditional markets,convenient pedestrian environments,and lower population density of older adults had better social networks and lower depressive symptoms.More significantly,the physical characteristics of parks and traditional markets(convenient accessibility,maximized visibility,connectivity,and territoriality)significantly facilitate social interactions.Those engaging in social interactions within these spaces exhibited significantly better social networks and lower depressive symptoms.These findings underscore the importance of considering relationship-oriented space characteristics in spatial and urban planning.

The last two decades have witnessed the invention and development of super-resolution microscopy(SRM)that breaks the diffraction limit of light and pushes the fluorescence microscopy resolution to several nanometers.While SRM is widely used in biological studies,such as resolving subdiffraction structures,molecular mapping,tracking single molecules,probing protein-protein interactions,and observing organelle dynamics,its direct application in translational medicine,such as disease diagnosis,is still preliminary.Despite their small size,cilia play a crucial role as organelles in cell signaling and motility,with defects in cilia leading to ciliopathy.Similar to other miniature organelles and macromolecular complexes,cilia are ideal for super-resolution imaging.In this review,we will 1)introduce cilia and ciliopathy,2)show how SRM extends our knowledge of cilia,and 3)focus on how SRM improves the diagnosis of motile ciliopathies.

In air traffic control communications (ATCC), misunderstandings between pilots and controllers could result in fatal aviation accidents. Fortunately, advanced automatic speech recognition technology has emerged as a promising means of preventing miscommunications and enhancing aviation safety. However, most existing speech recognition methods merely incorporate external language models on the decoder side, leading to insufficient semantic alignment between speech and text modalities during the encoding phase. Furthermore, it is challenging to model acoustic context dependencies over long distances due to the longer speech sequences than text, especially for the extended ATCC data. To address these issues, we propose a speech-text multimodal dual-tower architecture for speech recognition. It employs cross-modal interactions to achieve close semantic alignment during the encoding stage and strengthen its capabilities in modeling auditory long-distance context dependencies. In addition, a two-stage training strategy is elaborately devised to derive semantics-aware acoustic representations effectively. The first stage focuses on pre-training the speech-text multimodal encoding module to enhance inter-modal semantic alignment and aural long-distance context dependencies. The second stage fine-tunes the entire network to bridge the input modality variation gap between the training and inference phases and boost generalization performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed speech-text multimodal speech recognition method on the ATCC and AISHELL-1 datasets. It reduces the character error rate to 6.54% and 8.73%, respectively, and exhibits substantial performance gains of 28.76% and 23.82% compared with the best baseline model. The case studies indicate that the obtained semantics-aware acoustic representations aid in accurately recognizing terms with similar pronunciations but distinctive semantics. The AA5052 aluminum alloy is widely used in automobile and aerospace manufacturing,and with the development of light-weight alloys,it is required that these materials exhibit better mechanical properties.Previous studies have demonstrated that the addition of Sc to aluminum alloys can improve both the microstructure and properties of the alloys.In this study,the effect of Sc on the Fe-rich phase and properties of the AA5052 aluminum alloy was studied by adding 0%,0.05%,0.2%,and 0.3%Sc.The results show that with the increase of Sc,the coarse needle-like Fe-rich phase gradually transforms into Chinese-script and then nearly spherical particles,reduce the size of Fe-rich phase,and refine the grain with increase of high angle grain boundaries(HAGBs).These microstructure changes enhance the strength of the AA5052 alloy through Sc addition.The ductility of the alloy is obviously improved because the addition of a lower amount of Sc changes the morphology of Fe-rich phase from needle-like into a Chinese-script,and it is subsequently reduced as a result of significant increase in HAGBs with increasing Sc content.

Biomimetic porous silicon oxycarbide ceramics with improved specific strength and efficient thermal insulation

Considering the challenge of aerodynamic heating,the development of high-performance insulating ce-ramic materials with lightweight and low thermal conductivity is crucially important for aerospace vehi-cles to achieve flight at high speed for a long time.In this work,macro-porous silicon oxycarbide(SiOC)ceramics with directional pores(DP-SiOC)(mean pore size of 88.1μm)were prepared using polysiloxane precursors via freeze casting and photocrosslinking,followed by pyrolysis.The DP-SiOC samples were lightweight(density∼0.135 g cm^(-3))with a porosity of 90.4%,which showed good shapability through the molding of polysiloxane precursors.The DP-SiOC samples also exhibited an ultra-low thermal con-ductivity of 0.048 W(m K)^(-1)at room temperature,which can also withstand heat treatment at 1200°C for 1 h.In addition,scaffolds with triply periodic minimal surfaces(TPMS)were fabricated using digital light processing(DLP)printing,which was further filled with polysiloxane precursors for increasing the strength of DP-SiOC.The TPMS scaffolds filled with macro-porous SiOC ceramics(TPMS-DP-SiOC)showed good integration between TPMS and macro-pore structures,which had a porosity∼75%and high specific strength of 9.73×10^(3)N m kg^(-1).The thermal conductivity of TPMS-DP-SiOC samples was 0.255 W(m K)^(-1)at room temperature.The biomimetic TPMS-DP-SiOC ceramics developed in this study are likely used for thermal protection systems.

Dynamic Simultaneous Localization and Mapping(SLAM)in visual scenes is currently a major research area in fields such as robot navigation and autonomous driving.However,in the face of complex real-world envi-ronments,current dynamic SLAM systems struggle to achieve precise localization and map construction.With the advancement of deep learning,there has been increasing interest in the development of deep learning-based dynamic SLAM visual odometry in recent years,and more researchers are turning to deep learning techniques to address the challenges of dynamic SLAM.Compared to dynamic SLAM systems based on deep learning methods such as object detection and semantic segmentation,dynamic SLAM systems based on instance segmentation can not only detect dynamic objects in the scene but also distinguish different instances of the same type of object,thereby reducing the impact of dynamic objects on the SLAM system’s positioning.This article not only introduces traditional dynamic SLAM systems based on mathematical models but also provides a comprehensive analysis of existing instance segmentation algorithms and dynamic SLAM systems based on instance segmentation,comparing and summarizing their advantages and disadvantages.Through comparisons on datasets,it is found that instance segmentation-based methods have significant advantages in accuracy and robustness in dynamic environments.However,the real-time performance of instance segmentation algorithms hinders the widespread application of dynamic SLAM systems.In recent years,the rapid development of single-stage instance segmentationmethods has brought hope for the widespread application of dynamic SLAM systems based on instance segmentation.Finally,possible future research directions and improvementmeasures are discussed for reference by relevant professionals.

With the advantages of high efficiency and compact structure,supercritical carbon dioxide(sC02)Brayton cycles have bright prospects for development in energy conversion field.As one of the core components of the power cycle,the centrifugal compressor tends to operate near the critical point(304.13 K,7.3773 MPa).Normally,the compressor efficiency increases as the inlet temperature decreases.When the inlet temperature is close to the critical point,the density increases sharply as the temperature decreases,which results in quickly decreasing of volume flow rate and efficiency reducing.The flow loss mechanism of the sCO_(2) compressor operating at low flow rate is studied in this paper.Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulations for sCO_(2)compressor were carried out at various inlet temperatures and various mass flow rates.When the sCO_(2)compressor operates at low volume flow rate,the flow loss is generated mainly on the suction side near the trailing edge of the blade.The flow loss is related to the counterclockwise vortexes generated on the suction side of the main blade.The vortexes are caused by the flow separation in the downstream region of the impeller passage,which is different from air compressors operating at low flow rates.The reason for this flow separation is that the effect of Coriolis force is especially severe for the sCO_(2) fluid,compared to the viscous force and inertial force.At lower flow rates,with the stronger effect of Coriolis force,the direction of relative flow velocity deviates from the direction of radius,resulting in its lower radial component.The lower radial relative flow velocity leads to severe flow separation on the suction side near the trailing edge of the main blade.

Nature provides a wealth of bio-inspiration for advanced material research.Assembling various nanomaterials into biomimetic microtextures with bioinspired functionalities has spurred increasing research interests and facilitated technological advances in various applications.In recent years,two-dimensional materials(2DMs)have emerged as important building block units in the biomimicry field due to their distinct chemical,physical,electrical,electrochemical,and catalytic properties.In this review article,various mechanically driven assembly approaches are summarized to fabricate various genealogies of biomimetic 2DM microtextures with bio-inspired multifunctionality.First,sequential deformation strategies are discussed to programmably construct higher dimensional 2DM microtextures,ranging from wrinkles/crumples(one-time deformation)to multiscale hierarchies(multiple deformations).Next,the current progress using higher dimensional 2DM microtextures to imitate different biological structures and/or induce bio-inspired multifunctionality is systematically summarized.Four showcases of bio-inspiration and biomimicry using different 2DM nanosheets are highlighted:(1)wrinkle patterns of an earthworm that spur the design of strain sensors with programmable working ranges and sensitivities,(2)wrinkle appearance of a Shar-Pei dog that motivates the fabrication of stretchable energy storage devices,(3)hierarchical scale textures of a desert lizard that inspire cation-induced gelation platforms for 2DM aerogels,and(4)wrinkle skin of an elephant that influences the development of 2DM protective skin for soft robots.Finally,challenges and future opportunities of adopting 2DM nanosheets to assemble biomimetic microstructures with synergistic functionalities are discussed.

Stress-assisted corrosion mechanism of 3Ni steel by using gradient boosting decision tree machining learning method

Traditional 3Ni weathering steel cannot completely meet the requirements for offshore engineering development,resulting in the design of novel 3Ni steel with the addition of microalloy elements such as Mn or Nb for strength enhancement becoming a trend.The stress-assisted corrosion behavior of a novel designed high-strength 3Ni steel was investigated in the current study using the corrosion big data method.The information on the corrosion process was recorded using the galvanic corrosion current monitoring method.The gradi-ent boosting decision tree(GBDT)machine learning method was used to mine the corrosion mechanism,and the importance of the struc-ture factor was investigated.Field exposure tests were conducted to verify the calculated results using the GBDT method.Results indic-ated that the GBDT method can be effectively used to study the influence of structural factors on the corrosion process of 3Ni steel.Dif-ferent mechanisms for the addition of Mn and Cu to the stress-assisted corrosion of 3Ni steel suggested that Mn and Cu have no obvious effect on the corrosion rate of non-stressed 3Ni steel during the early stage of corrosion.When the corrosion reached a stable state,the in-crease in Mn element content increased the corrosion rate of 3Ni steel,while Cu reduced this rate.In the presence of stress,the increase in Mn element content and Cu addition can inhibit the corrosion process.The corrosion law of outdoor-exposed 3Ni steel is consistent with the law based on corrosion big data technology,verifying the reliability of the big data evaluation method and data prediction model selection.
