An Investigation and Suggestions for the Improvement of Brain Death Determination in China

Background: Brain death is the irreversible cessation of the function of the brain including the brainstem. In 2013, the Brain Injury Evaluation Quality Control Centre (BQCC) of the National Health and Family Planning Commission issued criteria and practical guidelines for the determination of brain death. This study aimed to evaluate whether the institutions have adopted these guidelines and to make suggestions for the improvement of the current criteria and practical guidelines for brain death determination in China. Methods: Consecutive brain death cases from 44 hospitals were evaluated for summary statistics for the following data: the performance of BQCC criteria and practical guidelines, clinical examination, apnea testing, ancillary testing, and the number of examinations as well as the waiting periods between examinations and details of who determined brain death. Data analysis was conducted from January 2013 to December 2017. Results: A total of 550 cases were obtained. All patients were determined to have deep coma and met the prerequisites for clinical testing. The performance rates of four brainstem reflex examinations (except cough reflex) ranged from 97.5% to 98.0%, and the completion rate as well as the coincidence rate were both 100.0%. The 238 cases (50.7%) completed apnea testing, and 231 cases (42.0%) had to stop apnea testing during the examination because of instability. The performance rates of the three ancillary tests, including electroencephalogram, short-latency somatosensory evoked potential, and transcranial Doppler, were 89.5%, 67.5%, and 79.5%, respectively;furthermore, the coincidence rates were 98.6%, 96.5%, and 99.5%, respectively. The combination of two ancillary tests was more accurate than one single ancillary test. A total of 401 (72.9%) cases successfully underwent two separate examinations to determine brain death with at least a 12-h waiting period. For time-of-flight(TOF)light detection and ranging(LiDAR),a three-channel high-performance transimpedance amplifier(TIA)with high immunity to input load capacitance is presented.A regulated cascade(RGC)as the input stage is at the core of the complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS)circuit chip,giving it more immunity to input photodiode detectors.A simple smart output interface acting as a feedback structure,which is rarely found in other designs,reduces the chip size and power consumption *** circuit is designed using a 0.5μm CMOS process technology to achieve low *** device delivers a 33.87 dB?transimpedance gain at 350 *** a higher input load capacitance,it shows a-3 dB bandwidth of 461 MHz,indicating a better detector tolerance at the front end of the *** a 3.3 V supply voltage,the device consumes 5.2 mW,and the total chip area with three channels is 402.8×597.0μm2(including the test pads).

Stretchable electronics that monitor joint activity and treat diseases based on liquid metal could be used in the development of healthcare *** devices can be seamlessly integrated with human ***,most high-precision microstructures and complex patterns are difficult to fabricate due to the limitations of conventional fabrication solutions,resulting in suboptimal performance under practical ***,a liquid-metal stretchable system utilizing natural leaf veins was reported as microstructures,which was based on a biomimetic concept and utilized an all-solution process for the preparation of complex *** systems are ultra-high tensile(800%tensile strain),environmentally stable(20 days)and mechanically durable(300-cycle).The system can accurately recognize the wearer's finger bending level as well as simple gesture *** the same time,the system acts as a wearable heater,which can realize the fast heating behavior of heating up to 50℃in 3 min under the human body-safe voltage(1.5 V).The tensile stability is demonstrated by the heterogeneous integration of lasers(405 nm)with the system interconnects for a stretchable and wearable light source.

The yield of castor is influenced by the type of inflorescence and the proportion of female ***,there are few studies on the genetic mechanism involved in the development and differentiation of castor *** this study,we performed transcriptomic analyses of three different phenotypes of inflorescences at the five-leaf *** comparison to the MI(complete pistil without willow leaves),290 and 89 differentially expressed genes(DEGs)were found in the SFI(complete pistil with willow leaves)and the BI(monoecious inflorescence),*** the DEGs,104 and 88 were upregulated in the SFI and BI,respectively,compared to the *** addition,186 DEGs and 1 DEG were downregulated in the SFI and BI compared to the ***,we conducted GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of the *** comparison to the MI,the SFI and BI exhibited the enrichment of functional branches in DEGs,specifically in pollen wall assembly,pollen development,and cellular component assembly involved in *** our study,RADL5 showed low expression levels between SFI-vs.-MI *** addition,we found that the expression of NAC in the SFI differed from that in MI and BI,and some genes related to hormonal signaling changed their expression levels during inflorescence *** results reveal the genetic mechanism of sex genotypes in castor,which will not only guide researchers in the breeding of castor but also provide a reference for genetic research on other flowering plants.

Antarctic coastal polynyas are biological hotspots in the Southern Ocean that support the abundance of hightrophic-level predators and are important for carbon cycling in the high-latitude *** this study,we examined the interannual variation of summertime phytoplankton biomass in the Marguerite Bay polynya(MBP)in the western Antarctic Peninsula area,and linked such variability to the Southern Annular Mode(SAM)that dominated the southern hemisphere extratropical climate *** satellite data,atmosphere reanalysis products and numerical simulations,we found that the interannual variation of summer chlorophyll-a(Chl-a)concentration in the MBP is significantly and negatively correlated with the spring SAM index,and weakly correlated with the summer SAM *** negative relation between summer Chl-a and spring SAM is due to weaker spring vertical mixing under a more positive SAM condition,which would inhibit the supply of iron from deep layers into the surface euphotic *** negative relation between spring mixing and spring SAM results from greater precipitation rate over the MBP region in positive SAM phase,which leads to lower salinity in the ocean surface *** coupled physical-biological mechanisms between SAM and phytoplankton biomass revealed in this study is important for us to predict the future variations of phytoplankton biomasses in Antarctic polynyas under climate change.

Defect engineering is an effective strategy for modifying the energy storage materials to improve their electrochemical ***, the impact of oxygen defect and its content on the electrochemical performances in the burgeoning aqueous NH+4storage field remains explored. Therefore, for the first time in this work, an oxygen-defective ammonium vanadate [（NH4）2V10O25·8H2O, denoted as Od-NHVO] with a novel 3D porous flower-like architecture was achieved via the reduction of thiourea in a mild reaction condition, which is a facile method that can realize the intention to regulate the oxygen defect content, with the capability of mass-production. The as-prepared OdM-NHVO with moderate oxygen defect content can deliver a stable specific capacitance output(505 F g-1, 252 mAh g-1at 0.5 A g-1with ～80% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles), which benefits from extra active sites, unimpeded NH+4-migration path and relatively high structure integrity. In contrast, low oxygen defect content will lead to the torpid electrochemical reaction kinetics while too high content of it will reduce the chargestorage capability and induce structural disintegration. The superior NH+4-storage behavior is achieved with the reversible intercalation/deintercalation process of NH+4accompanied by forming/breaking of hydrogen bond. As expected, the assembled flexible OdM-NHVO//PTCdi quasi-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor（FQSS HSC） also exhibits high areal capacitance, energy density and reliable flexibility. This work provides a new avenue for developing materials with oxygen-deficient structure for application in various aqueous non-metal cation storage systems.
