Introduction: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is undoubtedly the commonest androgen disorder in woman’s fertile period and certainly one of the most prevalent causes of anovulation. The syndrome has an estimated prevalence of 4% - 10% among women of childbearing age. Previously, our group demonstrated the effect of gonadal white adipose tissue transplantation from wild-type lean and fertile female mice to isogenic obese anovulatory ob/ob mice. These complex metabolic interrelationships between obesity and PCOS have yet to be fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of gonadal white adipose tissue (WAT) transplantation from the wild-type lean and fertile female mice to isogenic obese, anovulatory mice (Lep ob/Lep ob) on the expression of glycolysis- and TCA cycle-related genes and obtain a general view of the glucose metabolism in the brain of these animals. Methods: Fifteen ob/ob mice ranging from 2 to 3 months of age were divided into 3 experimental groups: control normal weight (n = 5), obese control (n = 5) and obese 7 days leptin treated (n = 5). The whole brains of the mice were processed for RNA extraction. The samples from each group were used to perform PCR assays using an array plate containing 84 primers to study the glucose metabolism-related genes. Results: The glycolysis- and TCA cycle-related genes were significantly downregulated. The most significantly affected genes were as follows: for glycolysis (fold regulation with p < 0.05):Pgm1,Bpgm,Aldob, andEno3 (119, 45, 18, and 28 times less, respectively);and for the TCA cycle (fold regulation with p < 0.05):Cs,Idh3b, andMdh2 (84, 27, and 37 times less, respectively).Conclusion: The seven-day leptin treated mice show a decrease in the glucose metabolism. These results confirm the ability of the adipose tissue-derived hormone leptin to regulate early crucial genes that are related to glycolysis mechanisms and to the TCA cycle. The effect of abiotic stresses on plant C:N:P homeostasis and their mitigation by silicon

In crop plants, various environmental stresses affect the balance of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus(C:N:P), leading to biochemical and physiological alterations and reductions in yield. Silicon(Si) is a beneficial element that alleviates plant stress. Most studies involving silicon have focused on physiological responses, such as improvements in photosynthetic processes, water use efficiency, and antioxidant defense systems. But recent research suggests that stressed plants facing either limited or excessive resources(water, light, nutrients, and toxic elements), strategically employ Si to maintain C:N:P homeostasis, thereby minimizing biomass losses. Understanding the role of Si in mitigating the impact of abiotic stresses on plants by regulating C:N:P homeostasis holds great potential for advancing sustainable agricultural practices in crop production. This review presents recent advances in characterizing the influence of environmental stresses on C:N:P homeostasis, as well as the role of Si in preserving C:N:P equilibrium and attenuating biological damage associated with abiotic stress. It underscores the beneficial effects of Si in sustaining C:N:P homeostasis and increasing yield via improved nutritional efficiency and stress mitigation.

ENSO impacts on litter stocks and water holding capacity in secondary forests in eastern Amazonia

Among the impacts of climate change,there is the intensification of phenomena such as the El Niño South-ern Oscillation(ENSO)responsible for El Niño and La Niñ***,understanding their effects on the functional pro-cesses of forests is ***,this study evaluated the effects of ENSO on litter stock and water holding capac-ity(WHC)in a successional forest in eastern *** occurred in periods with the most rainfall in El Niño(2019)and least in La Niña(2021)*** permanent plots were used to sample *** effects were evident for WHC,higher during El Niñ***,this influence was not clear for litter,as only in the rainy season effects were *** was a positive correlation of WHC with precipitation and humidity,while litter stocks were negatively correlated with temperature and wind *** the subject of this study requires long-term assessments,preliminary results suggests that,depending on the intensity of ENSO,forest functional processes can be strongly impacted and *** conclusion reinforces warnings by the scientific community about the impacts of climate change on the maintenance of litter stocks,decomposition and,consequently,the biogeochemical cycle and essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of Amazonia *** need to develop long-term research to understand the effects of climatic change on litter stocks and water holding capacity is highlighted,especially in Amazonia.

This new Commission was formed to continue IUGS activities in the environment following the closure of the IUGS Commission on Geological Sciences for Environmental Planning(COGEOENVIRONMENT) which had completed its term (refer to separate article in this issue).

The aims of this study were:i)to compare no-till areas in two municipalities located in different regions of Brazil,along with the influence on CO_(2)Flux and GPP,and ii)to verify the difference between environmental factors followed by the trends of these variables regarding future scenarios(ARIMA time-series model number).The study was carried out in two areas with different latitudes in the municipalities of Sinop-MT and Passo Fundo-RS,both in Brazil.A time series of 19 years was performed with data acquired by remote sensing from the following satellites:i)Landsat-8(OLI and TIRS),and ii)TERRA/AQUA(MODIS).The results propound that the spectro-temporal variables are directly influenced by soil management and agricultural practices over the observation time,with a satisfactory correlation in future predictions of the variables for the next ten years,in which presented that the variation of GPP and albedo values for the two study sites would gradually increase until 2028 and the temperature remained constant between the range of its seasonality,and CO_(2)Flux tends to decrease in its seasonality,indicating a higher CO_(2) absorption.

We study a subclass of the May–Leonard stochastic model with an arbitrary,even number of species,leading to the rise of two competing partnerships where individuals are *** carrying out a series of accurate numerical stochastic simulations,we show that alliances compete each other forming spatial domains bounded by interfaces of empty *** solve numerically the mean field equations associated with the stochastic model in one and two spatial *** demonstrate that the stationary interface profile presents topological properties which are related to the asymptotic spatial distribution of species of enemy alliances far away from the interface ***,we introduce a theoretical approach to model the formation of stable interfaces using spontaneous breaking of a discrete *** show that all the results provided by the soliton topological model,presented here for the very first time,are in agreement with the stochastic simulations and may be used as a tool for understanding the complex biodiversity in nature.

A methodology for kinetic modeling of conversion processes is *** proposed approach allows to overcome the lack of molecular detail of the petroleum fractions and to simulate the reactions of the process by means of a two-step *** the first step,a synthetic mixture of molecules representing the feedstock is generated via a molecular reconstruction method,termed SR-REM molecular *** the second step,a kinetic Monte Carlo method,termed stochastic simulation algorithm(SSA),is used to simulate the effect of the conversion reactions on the mixture of *** resulting methodology is applied to the Athabasca vacuum residue *** adequate molecular representation of the vacuum residue is obtained using the SR-REM *** reaction simulations present a good agreement with the laboratory data for Athabasca vacuum residue *** addition,the proposed methodology provides the molecular detail of the vacuum residue conversion throughout the reactions simulations.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of YbZn_(0.7)In_(1.3)

The new ternary YbZn0.7Inl.3 compound was synthesized in evacuated quartz ampoules at 900 ℃, followed by annealing at 400 ℃. It crystallized in the UHg2 structure type with a=0.47934（5） nm, c=0.36955（5） nm, V=0.073535（15） nm3. The shortest distances between the atoms in this structure were equal to 0.3696 nm （Yb-Yb）, 0.3328 nm （Yb-M） and 0.2767 nm （M M）, respectively. Magnetization measurements indicated that the title compound exhibited a paramagnetic behavior down to 2 K, with antiferromagnetic-like interactions. Calculated magnetic moment for YbZn0.7inl.3 （μeft =3.86μB/Yb） could indicate mixed valence state of Yb.

Evaluation of Peppermint Leaf Flavonoids as SARS-CoV-2 Spike Receptor-Binding Domain Attachment Inhibitors to the Human ACE2 Receptor: A Molecular Docking Study

Virtual screening is a computational technique widely used for identifying small molecules which are most likely to bind to a protein target. In the present work, a molecular docking study is carried out to propose potential candidates for preventing the RBD/ACE2 attachment. These candidates are sixteen different flavonoids present in the peppermint leaf. Results showed that Luteolin 7-O-neohesperidoside is the peppermint flavonoid with a higher binding affinity regarding the RBD/ACE2 complex (about -9.18 Kcal/mol). On the other hand, Sakuranetin presented the lowest affinity (about -6.38 Kcal/mol). Binding affinities of the other peppermint flavonoids ranged from -6.44 Kcal/mol up to -9.05 Kcal/mol. The binding site surface analysis showed pocket-like regions on the RBD/ACE2 complex that yield several interactions (mostly hydrogen bonds) between the flavonoid and the amino acid residues of the proteins. This study can open channels for the understanding of the roles of flavonoids against COVID-19 infection.
