Superconductivity （SC） or superfluidity （SF） is observed across a remarkably broad range of fermionic systems： in BCS, cuprate, iron-based, organic, and heavy-fermion superconductors, and in superfiuid helium-3 in condensed matter; in a variety of SC/SF phenomena in low-energy nuclear physics; in ultracold, trapped atomic gases; and in various exotic possibilities in neutron stars. The range of physical conditions and differences in microscopic physics defy all attempts to unify this behavior in any conventional picture. Here we propose a unification through the shared symmetry properties of the emergent condensed states, with microscopic differences absorbed into parameters. This, in turn, forces a rethinking of specific occurrences of SC/SF such as high-To SC in cuprates, which becomes far less mysterious when seen as part of a continuum of behavior shared by a variety of other systems.

Asupernowt is a transient astronomical event of spectacular peak brightness that is associ-a ted with an exploding star. Supernovae exhibit a range of observational characteristics that historically h^ts led to a rich set of classsifications and sub-clmssifications. Despite the complex- ity of the obscrwttionally-based supernova, taxonomy, we now believe that all supernovae are caused by just one of two basic inechanisms：（i） the collapse of the core of a inassive star late in its litb, or （ii） a runaway thermonuclear explosion in a white dwarf. A model for high-temperature superconductors incorporating antiferromagnetism,d-wave superconductivity,and no double lattice-site occupancy can give energy surfaces delicately balanced between antiferromagnetic and superconducting order for specific ranges of doping and temperature. The resulting properties can reconcile a universal cuprate phase diagram with rich inhomogeneity,relate that inhomogeneity to pseudogaps,give a fundamental rationale for giant proximity eects and other emergent behavior,and provide an objective framework to separate essential from peripheral in the superconducting mechanism.

We review application of the SU(4)model of strongly-correlated electrons to cuprate and iron-based superconductors.A minimal self-consistent generalization of BCS theory to incorporate antiferromag-netism on an equal footing with pairing and strong Coulomb repulsion is found to account system-atically for the major features of high-temperature superconductivity,with microscopic details of the parent compounds entering only *** provides a systematic procedure to separate es-sential from peripheral,suggesting that many features exhibited by the high-Te data set are of interest in their own right but are not central to the superconducting *** generally,we propose that the surprisingly broad range of conventional and unconventional superconducting and superfluid behavior observed across many fields of physics results from the systemnatic appearance of similar al-gebraic structures for the emergent ffoctive Harmiltonians,even though the microscopic Harmiltonians of the corresponding parent states may differ radically from each other.
