Copper(0)-media.ed reversible-dea.tiva.ion ra.ica. polymeriza.ion(Cu(0)-media.ed RDRP) of the wa.er-soluble monomer Nisopropyla.ryla.ide(NIPa.) ha. been cha.lenging with the problems of high dispersity, poor control over the molecula. weights(MWs) or complex or multi rea.tion steps, etc. In this work, we report the well-controlled polymeriza.ion of NIPa. in wa.er via.a.fa.ile one-pot a.d one-step Cu(0)-media.ed RDRP. The results of this a.proa.h show tha. the key for kicking off the Cu(0)-media.ed NIPa. RDRPs is to ensure sufficient Cu~I a. the very beginning, a.d the key to a.hieve a.well-controlled cha.n growth is to provide a.equa.e dea.tiva.ion strength during the polymeriza.ion process. For NIPa., which ha. a.high propa.a.ion ra.e consta.t, the dea.tiva.ion control ca. be effectively enha.ced by extra.a.ding dea.tiva.or(i.e., Cu~II) to the system. Moreover, a.low rea.tion tempera.ure(4 ℃) is necessa.y in the controlled synthesis of higher MW poly(Nisopropyla.ryla.ide)(PNIPa.) to a.oid the compromise in control ca.sed by the pha.e tra.sition from its lower critica. solution tempera.ure(LCST). Through this new kinetica.ly controlled stra.egy, PNIPa.s with well-defined structure, na.row molecula. weight distributions(MWDs) a.d va.ied MWs were successfully a.hieved.
