Effect of a cervical collar on optic nerve sheath diameter in trauma patients

BACKGROUND:As advocated in advanced trauma life support and prehospital trauma life support protocols,cervical immobilization is applied until cervical spine injury is excluded.This study aimed to show the difference in optic nerve sheath diameter(ONSD)between patients with and without a cervical collar using computed tomography(CT).METHODS:This was a single-center,retrospective study examining trauma patients who presented to the emergency department between January 1,2021,and December 31,2021.The ONSD on brain CT of the trauma patients was measured and analyzed to determine whether there was a difference between the ONSD with and without the cervical collar.RESULTS:The study population consisted of 169 patients.On CT imaging of patients with(n=66)and without(n=103)cervical collars,the mean ONSD in the axial plane were 5.43±0.50 mm and 5.04±0.46 mm respectively for the right eye and 5.50±0.52 mm and 5.11±0.46 mm respectively for the left eye.The results revealed an association between the presence of a cervical collar and the mean ONSD,which was statistically significant(P<0.001)for both the right and left eyes.CONCLUSION:A cervical collar may be associated with increased ONSD.The effect of this increase in the ONSD on clinical outcomes needs to be investigated,and the actual need for cervical collar in the emergency department should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

This study aimed to investigate the responses in rice(Oryza sativa cv.Osmancik 97)production and grain zinc(Zn)accumulation to combined Zn and sulfur(S)fertilization.The experiment was designed as a factorial experiment with two Zn and three S concentrations applied to the soil in a completely randomized design with four replications.The plants were grown under greenhouse conditions at low(0.25 mg/kg)and adequate(5 mg/kg)Zn rates combined with S(CaSO_(4)·2H_(2)O)application(low,2.5 mg/kg;moderate,10 mg/kg,and adequate,50 mg/kg).The lowest rate of S at adequate soil Zn treatment increased grain yield by 68%compared with the same S rate at low Zn supply.Plants with the adequate S rate at low Zn and adequate Zn supply produced the highest grain yield,with increases of 247%and 143%compared with low S rate at low Zn and adequate Zn supply,respectively.The concentration of grain Zn and S responded differently to the applied S rates depending on the soil Zn condition.The highest grain Zn concentration,reaching 41.5 mg/kg,was observed when adequate Zn was supplied at the low S rate.Conversely,the adequate S rate at the low soil Zn conditions yielded the highest grain S concentration.The total grain Zn uptake per plant showed particular increases in grain Zn yield when adequate S rates were applied,showing increases of 208%and 111%compared with low S rate under low and adequate soil Zn conditions,respectively.The results indicated that the synergistic application of soil Zn and S improves grain production and grain Zn yield.These results highlight the importance of total grain Zn yield in addition to grain Zn concentration,especially under the growth conditions where grain yield shows particular increases as grain Zn is diluted due to increased grain yield by increasing S fertilization.

The primary aim of this study is inert COD removal from leachate nanofiltration concentrate because of its high concentration of resistant organic pollutants.Within this framework,this study focuses on the treatability of leachate nanofiltration concentrate through Fenton oxidation and optimization of process parameters to reach the maximum pollutant removal by using response surface methodology(RSM).Initial pH,Fe2+concentration,H_(2)O_(2)/Fe^(2+)molar ratio and oxidation time are selected as the independent variables,whereas total COD,color,inert COD and UV254 removal are selected as the responses.According to the ANOVA results,the R^(2) values of all responses are found to be over 95%.Under the optimum conditions determined by the model(pH:3.99,Fe^(2+):150 mmol/L,H_(2)O_(2)/Fe^(2+):3.27 and oxidation time:84.8 min),the maximum COD removal efficiency is determined as 91.4%by the model.The color,inert COD and UV254 removal efficiencies are determined to be 99.9%,97.2%and 99.5%,respectively,by the model,whereas the total COD,color,inert COD and UV254 removal efficiencies are found respectively to be 90%,96.5%,95.3%and 97.2%,experimentally under the optimum operating conditions.The Fenton process improves the biodegradability of the leachate NF concentrate,increasing the BOD5/COD ratio from the value of 0.04 to the value of 0.4.The operational cost of the process is calculated to be 0.238€/g COD_(removed).The results indicate that the Fenton oxidation process is an efficient and economical technology in improvement of the biological degradability of leachate nanofiltration concentrate and in removal of resistant organic pollutants.

In this study, the applicability of plasma nitriding treatment in the production of non-magnetic and corrosion resistant layer on 316L stainless steel implant material was investigated. 316L stainless steel substrates were plasma nitrided at temperatures of 350 ℃, 375 ℃, 400 ℃, 425 ℃ and 450 ℃ for 2 h in a gas mixture of 50% N2-50% H2, respectively. It was determined that the treatment temperature is the most important factor on the properties of the corrosion resistant layer of 316L stainless steel. The results show that s-phase formed at the temperatures under 400 ℃, and at the temperatures above 400 ℃, instead of s-phase, CrN and y＇-Fe4N phases were observed in the modified layer. The electrical resistivity and surface roughness of the modified layer increase with treatment temperature. Under 400 ℃ the corrosion resistance increased with the temperature, above 400 ℃ it decreased with the increase in treatment temperature. It was analyzed that the electrical resistivity and the soft （ideal） ferro- magnetic properties of 316L stainless steel increased with treatment temperature during nitriding treatment. Also, plasma ni- triding at low temperatures provided magnetic behavior close to the ideal untreated 316L stainless steel.

The photocatalysis of Ti O2nanotubes（Ti/TNT） and Ni-deposited Ti O2nanotubes（Ti/TNT–Ni） for methyl orange degradation was investigated.Methyl orange was selected as the model pollutant,and its photocatalytic degradation was determined in 1 mol/L KOH solution.Ti/TNT was produced by anodizing method,and the electrodeposition of nickel on TNT was performed galvanostatically.The characterization of electrodes was performed by scanning electron microscopy,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis.The electrochemical behavior of the electrodes was determined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.The irradiation was applied by visible light source（k = 635 nm） for 48 h.UV/vis spectroscopy was used for determination of the concentration of methyl orange.Furthermore,after 48-h irradiation,the solutions were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.Results showed that the concentration of methyl orange decreased from 100 ppm（10-6） to 16 ppm,after48-h irradiation with the photocatalysis of Ti/TNT–Ni.

Neuroendocrine tumors(NETs) are uncommon gastrointestinal neoplasms but have been increasingly recognized over the past few decades. Luminal NETs originate from the submucosa of the gastrointestinal tract and careful endoscopic exam is a key for accurate diagnosis. Despite their reputation as indolent tumors with a good prognosis,some NETs may have aggressive features with associated poor long-term survival. Management of NETs requires full understanding of tumor size,depth of invasion,local lymphadenopathy status,and location within the gastrointestinal tract. Staging with endoscopic ultrasound or cross-sectional imaging is important for determining whether endoscopic treatment is feasible. In general,small superficial NETs can be managed by endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD). In contrast,NETs larger than 2 cm are almost universally treated with surgical resection with lymphadenectomy. For those tumors between 11-20 mm in size,careful evaluation can identify which NETs may be managed with endoscopic resection. The increasing adoption of ESD may improve the results of endoscopic resection for luminal NETs. However,enthusiasm for endoscopic resection must be tempered with respect for the more definitive curative results afforded by surgical treatment with more advanced lesions.

Effects of Annealing on Thermoluminescence Peak Positions and Trap Depths of Synthetic and Natural Quartz by Means of the Various Heating Rate Method

Some environmental and experimental variables such as annealing process alter the structure of glow curves of some thermoluminescence materials.We investigate the effects of annnealing on thermoluminescence peaks of synthetic and natural quartz at different heating rates.The experimental results show that the peak temperatures of glow peaks in annealed samples shift to higher temperature sides.The amount of shifting is higher for low temperature peaks than high temperature peaks.The trap depths of annealed and unannealed samples of both synthetic and natural quartz are also obtained by various heating rate methods.It is noted that the annealing process affects the trap depth of all glow peaks and the trap depth increases after the annealing process.

The thermoluminescent(TL) properties such as glow curve structure, relative thermoluminescence sensitivity,dose response linearity of lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosimeters 6 LiF:Ti,Mg(TLD-600) and 7 LiF:Ti,Mg(TLD-700) are investigated after irradiationCf neutron+gamma andSr-Y beta sources at room temperature and then the obtained results are compared. The kinetic parameters, namely the order of kinetics b,activation energy Ea and the frequency factor s,are calculated using the computerized glow curve deconvolution(CGCD) program. The effect of heating rate on the glow curves of dosimeters is also investigated. The maximum TL peak intensities and the total area under the glow curves decrease with the increasing heating rate. There is no agreement with the kinetic parameters calculated by the CGCD program for both radiation sources.

AIM: To compare therapeutic effects of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide(IVTA) versus intravitreal bevacizumab(IVB) injections for bilateral diffuse diabetic macular edema(DDME). METHODS: Forty eyes of 20 patients with bilateral DDME participated in this study. For each patient, 4 mg/0.1 m L IVTA was injected to one eye and 2.5 mg/0.1 m L IVB was injected to the other eye. The effects of injection for diabetic macular edema(DME) were evaluated using best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA), central macular thickness(CMT) by optical coherence tomography(OCT)and intraocular pressure(IOP) by applanation tonometer.Patients underwent eye examinations, including BCVA,CMT, and IOP at pre-injection, 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 wk after injection. During the follow-up, second injections were performed to eyes which have CMT greater than 400 μm at 12 wk for salvage therapy.RESULTS: BCVA(logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) at pre-injection, 1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 wk after injection was 0.71 ±0.19, 0.62 ±0.23, 0.63 ±0.12, 0.63 ±0.13,0.63±0.14 and 0.61±0.24 in the IVTA group and 0.68±0.25,0.61 ±0.22, 0.60 ±0.24, 0.62 ±0.25, 0.65 ±0.26 and 0.59 ±0.25 in the IVB group, respectively. CMT(μm) at pre-injection,1, 4, 8, 12 and 24 wk after injection was 544 ±125, 383±96,335 ±87, 323 ±87, 333 ±92, 335 ±61 in the IVTA group and514 ±100, 431 ±86, 428 ±107, 442 ±106, 478 ±112, 430 ±88 in the IVB group respectively. Reduction ratios of mean CMT were 29% at 1wk, 38% at 4wk, 40% at 8wk, 38% at12 wk, and 38% at 24 wk in the IVTA group. Second IVTA injections were performed to the 6 eyes(30%) at 12 wk.Reduction ratios of mean CMT were 16% at 1wk, 17% at4wk, 14% at 8wk, 7% at 12 wk, and 16% at 24 wk in the IVB group. Second IVB injections were performed to the15 eyes(75%) at 12 wk.CONCLUSION: This study showed earlier and more frequent macular edema recurrences in the eyes treated with bevacizumab compared with the ones treated with triamcinolone acetonide.
