Comprehensive chemical characterization of PM_(2.5) in the large East Mediterranean-Middle East city of Beirut,Lebanon

The chemical composition of PM_(2.5) at two sites in Lebanon,a country in the East Mediterranean-Middle East region,is investigated in the spring and summer *** average PM_(2.5) concentrations were of(29±16)μg/m 3 for Beirut urban site and(32±14)μg/m 3 for Beirut suburban *** study showed that the geographic location of the East Mediterranean region,such as its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and the dust storm intrusion are a significant contributor to the high PM levels from natural sources,which cannot be mitigated,rendering the PM_(2.5) WHO annual Air Quality guideline unattainable due to high natural background,which also applies to the entire Middle East *** and Eastern Europe are the dominant origin of air masses throughout our sampling days,suggesting the long-range transport as an important potential contributor to the high observed concentrations of V,Ni,and sulfate in this region most probably in other East Mediterranean countries than Lebanon *** local sources determined through the chemical speciation including organics are road transport,resuspension of dust and diesel private generators.A health risk assessment of airborne metals was performed and the carcinogenic risk for all the metals exceeded by 42(adults)and 14(children)times the acceptable risk level(10^(-6))at both *** was the predominant carcinogenic metal,emphasizing the need to replace energy production with cleaner energy on a regional level and highlighting the severe impact of air pollution on the health of inhabitants in this region’s main cities.

Crystal Structure, Vibrational Studies, Optical Properties and TG-DTA Investigations of a New Chlorocadmate Templated by 1-Methylimidazolium

Chemical preparation, X-ray single crystal diffraction, thermal analysis, electrochemical measurements, IR, Raman and UV spectroscopic investigations of a novel organic-inorganic hybrid material（CaH7N2）CdCl3（H2O）（1） were described. 1-Methylimidazolium aquapentachlorocadmate（II） crystallized in the monoclinic system with P2 1/n space group. Its structure provided a new interesting example of infinite inorganic layers of [CdCl3（H2O）]n n- centered by （-101） planes. The [CdCl5（H2O）]- anions were interconnected by O-H...Cl hydrogen bonds. Acidic protons of the chloride group were transferred to the organic molecule, giving the singly-protonated cations. The ability of ions to form a spontaneous three-dimensional structure through O-H…Cl and N-H…Cl hydrogen bonds was fully utilized. These hydrogen bonds induced notable vibrational effects. IR and Raman spectra were reported and discussed on the basis of group theoretical analysis and on quantum chemical density theory（DFT） calculation. The molecular HOMO-LUMO compositions and their respective energy gaps were also drawn to explain the activity of our compound. The role of the intermolecular interaction in this crystal was analyzed. The optical study was also investigated by UV-Vis absorption spectrum. Thermal analysis reveals the hydrous character of the compound. Cyclic voltammetry was studied to evaluate the spectral and structural changes accompanying electron transfer.

Pavement roughness(IRI—International Roughness Index values)influence the stability of traffic movements both on intercity roads and urban *** study is to determine the exact locations of critical pavement roughness values that affect traffic motion stability and comfort in city centre highway *** data with 10 m intervals were collected on a 3140 m divided road containing three consecutive signalized intersections in the city centre *** data were analysed using the distance-dependent Mann-Kendall trend analysis method and checkerboard *** sections where roughness is important were determined at a 95%confidence *** results will show where future pavement improvements should be prioritized for municipalities and road maintenance engineers and will form a basis for the urban road management system.

Geochemistry and Petrogenesis of Intracontinental Basaltic Volcanism on the Northwest Arabian Plate,Gaziantep Basin,Southeast Anatolia,Turkey

Volcanism along the northwest boundary of the Arabian Plate found in the Gaziantep Basin, southeast Turkey, is of Miocene age and is of alkaline and calc-alkaline basic composition. The rare earth element data for both compositional series indicates spinel-peridotite source areas. The rare earth and trace elements of the alkaline lavas originate from a highly primitive and slightiy contaminated asthenospheric mantle; those of the calc-alkaline lavas originate from a highly heterogeneous, asthenospheric, and lithospheric mantle source. Partial melting and magmatic differentiation processes played a role in the formation of the petrological features of these volcanics. These rocks form two groups on the basis of their 87Sr[S6Sr and 143Nd/lI4Nd isotopic compositions in addition to their classifications based on their chemical compositions （alkaline and calc-alkaline）. These isotopic differences indicate a dissimilar parental magma. Therefore, high Nd isotope samples imply a previously formed and highly primitive mantle whereas low Nd isotope samples may indicate comparable partial melting of an enriched heterogeneous shallow mantle. Other isotopic changes that do not conform to the chemical features of these lavas are partly related to the various tectonic events of the region, such as the Dead Sea Fault System and the Bitlis Suture Zone.

Application of Response Surface Methodology for Optimization of Cadmium Ion Removal from an Aqueous Solution by Eggshell Powder

The removal of cadmium（Cd） from synthetic solutions by batch adsorption process was performed using eggshell powder, which is mainly composed of calcite（CaCO3）. In order to optimize the adsorption process, a re- sponse surface methodology（RSM） based on Central Composite Design（CCD） was applied. Developed model for Cd removal yields（R, %） response was statistically validated by variance analysis（ANOVA） which showed a high de- termination coefficient value（R2=0.9889）. According to Minitab software, the optimal conditions were found at tem- perature of 44℃, eggshell adsorbent dose of 2.98 g, initial Cd concentration of 36.74 mg/L and initial pH of 7. Under these conditions, the Cd removal yield was 98.76%. The deviation value of 1.24% confirms the validity of the model for the adsorption process optimization. The adsorption isotherm has been described by a Freundlich model. In addition, the predominant sorption mechanisms are the chemisorptions or precipitation（non-reversible） and ion ex- change（reversible）.

Geochemistry and Zircon U-Pb Dates of Felsic-Intermediate Members of the Late Cretaceous Yüksekova Arc Basin: Constraints on the Evolution of the Bitlis–Zagros Branch of Neotethys(Elazig, E Turkey)

During the Late Cretaceous in the Eastern Mediterranean, the northern branch of the southern Neotethys was closed by multiple northward subductions. Of these, the most northerly located subduction created the Baskil continental arc at around 82–84 Ma. The more southerly and intra-oceanic subduction, on the other hand, produced an arc-basin system,the Yüksekova Complex, as early as the late Cenomanian–early Turonian. The abundant and relatively well-studied basaltic rocks of this complex were intruded by dykes, sills and small stocks of felsic–intermediate rocks, not previously studied in detail. The intrusives collected from five different localities in the Elazig region of eastern Turkey are all subalkaline, with low Nb/Y values. Most of them have been chemically classified as rhyodacites/dacites, whereas a small number appear to be andesites. In normal mid-ocean-ridge basalt(N-MORB)-normalised plots, the intrusives are characterised by relative enrichments in Th and La over Nb, Zr, Hf, Ti and high field strength elements(HREEs), indicating their derivation from a subduction-modified source. While their relatively high, positive εN d(i) values(+6.4 and +7.2) might suggest a depleted mantle source for their ultimate origin, somewhat radiogenic Pb values indicate a sedimentary contribution to the source of the rocks. The overall geochemical characteristics indicate their generation in an oceanic arc setting. The zircon U-Pb Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry(LA-ICP-MS) data obtained from five felsic-intermediate rock samples yielded intrusion dates of 80–88 Ma. This suggests that the Elazig oceanic arc-related intrusives are slightly younger than those of the Yüksekova arc-basin system, but coeval with the Baskil continental arc. However, the felsic–intermediate intrusives show different geochemical characteristics(oceanic arc-type, with a lack of crustal contamination)to those of the Baskil continental arc. Effect of modifying agents on the hydrophobicity and yield of zinc borate synthesized by zinc oxide

The aim of this study was to synthesize zinc borate using zinc oxide, reference boric acid, and reference zinc borate （reference ZB） as the seed, and to investigate the effects of modifying agents and reaction parameters on the hydrophobicity and yield, respectively. The reaction parameters include reaction time （1-5 h）, reactant ratio （H3BO3/ZnO by mass： 2-5）, seed ratio （seed crystal/（H3BO3＋ZnO） by mass： 0-2wt%）, reaction temperature （50-120~C）, cooling temperature （10-80~C）, and stirring rate （400-700 r/min）; the modifying agents involve propylene glycol （PG, 0-6wt%）, kerosene （lwt%-6wt%）, and oleic acid （OA, lwt%-6wt%） with solvents （isopropyl alcohol （IPA）, ethanol, and methanol）. The results of reaction yield obtained from either magnetically or mechanically stirred systems were compared. Zinc borate produced was characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR）, and contact angle tests to identify the hydrophobicity. In conclusion, zinc borate is synthesized successfully under the optimized reaction conditions, and the different modifying agents with various solvents affect the hydrophobicity of zinc borate.

Clinical outcomes of 25-gauge vitrectomy surgery for vitreoretinal diseases: comparison of vitrectomy alone and phaco-vitrectomy

AIMTo compare the clinical outcomes of combined 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and phacoemulsification/posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC-IOL) implantation with vitrectomy alone surgery in patients with various vitreoretinal *** total of 306 eyes (145 with PPV alone and 161 with phaco-vitrectomy) were enrolled in this retrospective analysis. The surgical approach was 25-gauge PPV combined with phacoemulsification and PC-IOL implantation at the same time in eyes in phaco-vitrectomy group and only PPV in eyes in vitrectomy alone surgery group. The main outcome measures were postoperative clinical outcomes included anterior chamber inflammation, changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA).RESULTSThe most common postoperative complication was anterior chamber reaction which has higher incidence in phaco-vitrectomy group (Pst day IOP of vitrectomy alone group was significantly lower than that of phaco-vitrectomy group (16.3±5.8 mm Hg vs 17.8±8.1 mm Hg, respectively, P=0.02). Hypotony (IOP≤8 mm Hg) was not different between groups in the postoperative 1st day (P>0.05). The mean preoperative visual acuity was not different between groups (1.6±0.9 logMAR vs 1.8±0.9 logMAR, respectively, P>0.05). However, the mean visual acuity was decreased in vitrectomy alone group at the final visit compared to phaco-vitrectomy group (1.2±0.8 logMAR, 0.9±0.7 logMAR, respectively P<0.05).CONCLUSIONTwenty-five gauge PPV combined with phacoemulsification surgery is a safe and efficient procedure, which can be preferred in phacic patients with a variety of vitreoretinal diseases compared to vitrectomy alone. Despite improved outcomes, this approach is not free of limitations as anterior chamber complications especially with combined surgery.

In today's modern electric vehicles,enhancing the safety-critical cyber-physical system(CPS)'s performance is necessary for the safe maneuverability of the *** a typical CPS,the braking system is crucial for the vehicle design and safe ***,precise state estimation of the brake pressure is desired to perform safe driving with a high degree of *** this paper,a sensorless state estimation technique of the vehicle's brake pressure is developed using a deep-learning approach.A deep neural network(DNN)is structured and trained using deep-learning training techniques,such as,dropout and rectified *** techniques are utilized to obtain more accurate model for brake pressure state estimation *** proposed model is trained using real experimental training data which were collected via conducting real vehicle *** vehicle was attached to a chassis dynamometer while the brake pressure data were collected under random driving *** on these experimental data,the DNN is trained and the performance of the proposed state estimation approach is validated *** results demonstrate high-accuracy brake pressure state estimation with RMSE of 0.048 MPa.

Comparative evaluation of boron distribution from ulexite,colemanite and DOT rods in Scots pine wood

This study evaluated boron diff usion from rods made of raw boron minerals,ulexite and colemanite with low water solubility,in comparison with di-sodium octaborate tetrahydrate(DOT).Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris L.)sapwood and heartwood blocks were conditioned to target moisture contents of 30%,60%,and 90%.The rods were inserted into the blocks through treatment holes and boron diff usion was observed at three assay zones across the blocks after 7,30,60 and 90-day-incubation at room *** glycol was also inserted into the holes to improve boron diff *** levels increased with increased wood moisture *** some exceptions,boron in the assay zones did not tend to follow consistent amount gradients with distance from the treatment *** levels from ulexite rods were higher than those from colemanite rods,with DOT rods with the highest diff usion rates as a result of higher water solubility of DOT than ulexite and *** results suggest that ulexite-based rods may be useful inthe presence of ethylene glycol in sapwood when wood is at high moisture content for extended periods.
