BACKGROUND As an autoimmune disease,systemic lupus erythaematosus(SLE)can affect multiple systems of the body and is mainly treated by steroids and immunosuppressive agents.SLE results in a long-term immunocompromised state with the potential of infection complications(e.g.,bacterial,fungal and viral infections).Abdominal pain or acute abdomen are frequently the only manifestations of SLE at disease onset or during the early stage of the disease course.Thus,multidisciplinary collaboration is required to identify these patients because timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improving their prognosis.CASE SUMMARY Herein,we reported a case of an SLE patient with visceral varicella that was identified after the onset of abdominal pain.The 16-year-old female patient with SLE was admitted to our hospital due to initial attacks of abdominal pain and intermittent fever.The patient’s condition rapidly became aggravated within a short time after admission,with large areas of vesicular rash,severe pneumonia,respiratory failure,shock,and haematologic system and hepatic function impairment.Based on multidisciplinary collaboration,the patient was diagnosed with visceral disseminated varicella and was administered life support,antiviral(acyclovir),immunomodulatory(intravenous injection of human immunoglobulin),anti-infection(vancomycin)and anti-inflammatory(steroid)therapies.After treatment,her clinical symptoms and laboratory indicators gradually improved,and the patient was discharged.CONCLUSION SLE patients long treated with steroids and immunosuppressive agents are susceptible to various infections.Considering that visceral varicella with abdominal pain as the initial presentation is characterized by rapid progression and often coexists with serious complications,prompt diagnosis and early antiviral therapy are critical to prevent severe life-threatening complications.

In transportation architecture,wayfinding quality is a crucial factor for determining transfer efficiency and level of service.When developing architectural design concepts,designers often employ their visual attention to imagine where passengers will look.A saliency model is a software program that can predict human visual attention.This research examined whether a saliency model or designer visual attention is a good predictor of passenger visual attention during wayfinding in side transportation architecture.Using a remote eye-tracking system,the eye-movements of 29 participants watching 100 still images depicting different indoor seenes of transportation architecture were recorded and transformed into saliency maps to illustrate participants'visual attention.Participants were categorized as either"designers"or"laypeople"based on their architectural design expertise.Similarities were compared among the"designers'"visual attention,saliency model predictions,and"laypeople's"visual attention.The results showed that while the"designers'"visual attention was the best predictor of that of"laypeople",followed by saliency models,a single desig ner's visual attend on was not a good predictor.The divergence in visual attention highlights the limitation of designers in predicting passenger wayfinding behavior and implies that integrating a saliency model in practice can be beneficial for wayfinding design.

Background The objective of this paper is to analyze the current status of monkeypox worldwide.In the face of this public health threat,our purpose is to elucidate the clinical characteristics and epidemiology of monkeypox,the developmental progress of monkeypox-related drugs and the vaccines available.Data sources The literature review was performed in databases including PubMed,Science Direct and Google Scholar up to July 2022.Results Since May 2022,the World Health Organization has reported more than 45,000 confirmed cases from 92 nonendemic countries,including nine deaths.Although some women and children have been infected so far,most cases have occurred among men who have sex with other men,especially those with multiple sexual partners or anonymous sex.Conclusions Pediatric monkeypox infection has been associated with a higher likelihood of severe illness and mortality than in adults.Severe monkeypox illness in pediatrics often requires adjunctive antiviral therapy.It is crucial for all countries to establish sound monitoring and testing systems and be prepared with emergency preparedness.

AIM:To investigate the prevalence of color vision deficiency(CVD)among college students and their quality of life(QoL)in a Chinese college.METHODS:This cross-sectional study was performed in Sichuan University in Chengdu,China.The questionnaire containing participants’demographic data,as well as CVD related QoL was distributed to students who were screened as CVD[by Color Vision Examination Plates(Version 6)]in 2022 freshman entrance examination.Color blindness QoL(CBQoL)and utility analysis were used to evaluate the QoL of CVD students.RESULTS:There were 381 of 17303(2.20%)students screened as CVD,including 368(4.11%)males and 13(0.16%)females.A total of 317 students completed the questionnaire,the response rate was 83.20%.Only 166 participants(52.3%)knew they have CVD before the physical examination for college entrance examination,while a total of 145 participants(45.74%)hoped to be diagnosed earlier.The medians of CBQoL score and utility were 5.85(range 2.2-6)and 1(range 0-1),respectively.The proportions of students whose QoL is affected by CVD were 67.63%(211/312)and 42.27%(134/317)measured by CBQoL and utility analysis respectively.CONCLUSION:The prevalence of CVD in males is much higher than that in females.The time when CVD students first became aware of their CVD is relatively late.The QoL of the study population is quite high,while a large proportion of students’QoL are affected by CVD.It is suggested that as a congenital defect,CVD screening in China should be earlier,and appropriate guidance and support are needed for CVD patients to help them better adapt to life,study,and work.

BACKGROUND Castleman’s disease(CD),also known as vascular follicular lymphadenopathy is a rare proliferative disease of lymphoid tissue of unknown etiology that is clinically classified as unicentric CD(UCD) or multicentric CD(MCD) depending on lymph node involvement.At present,idiopathic MCD(iMCD) is treated with interleukin-6 inhibitors,but some patients have poor clinical outcomes.This paper reports on a case of iMCD that achieved a good therapeutic effect after treatment with glucocorticoids combined with tofacitinib.The relevant data are summarized and reported below.CASE SUMMARY This paper reports on a case of MCD in a 49-year-old female with persistent peritoneal effusion as the first manifestation and combined with multiple lymphadenopathies.Lymph node biopsy showed Castleman’s disease-like changes.The ascites subsided after treatment with glucocorticoids and tofacitinib,indicating that the treatment was effective.CONCLUSION The combination of glucocorticoids with tofacitinib is an effective regimen for the treatment of CD.

Background:Biliary tract cancers(BTCs)comprise a heterogeneous group of aggressive malignancies with unfavorable prognoses.The benefit of chemotherapy seems to have reached a bottleneck and,therefore,new effective therapeutic strategies for advanced BTCs are needed.Molecularly targeted therapies in selected patients are rapidly changing the situation.However,the low frequency of specific driver alterations in BTCs limits their wide application.Recently,immunotherapeutic approaches are also under active investigation in BTCs,but the role of immunotherapy in BTCs remains controversial.Data sources:Pub Med,Web of Science,and meeting resources were searched for relevant articles published from January 2017 to May 2022.The search aimed to identify current and emerging immunotherapeutic approaches for BTCs.Information on clinical trials was obtained from https://clinicaltrials.gov/and http://***/.Results:Immunotherapy in BTC patients is currently under investigation,and most of the investigations focused on the application of immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs).However,only a subgroup of BTCs with microsatellite-instability high(MSI-H)/DNA mismatch repair-deficient(d MMR)or tumor mutational burden-high(TMB-H)benefit from monotherapy of ICIs,and limited activity was observed in the second or subsequent settings.Nevertheless,promising results come from studies of ICIs in combination with other therapeutic approaches,including chemotherapy,in advanced BTCs,with a moderate toxicity profile.Recent studies demonstrated that compared to GEMCIS alone,durvalumab plus GEMCIS significantly improved patient survival(TOPAZ-1 trial)and that ICIs-combined chemoimmunotherapy is poised to become a new frontline therapy option,regardless of TMB and MMR/MSI status.Adoptive cell therapy and peptide-or dendritic-based cancer vaccines are other immunotherapeutic options that are being studied in BTCs.Numerous biomarkers have been investigated to define their predictive role in response to ICIs,but no predictive biomarker has been validated,e

Experimental study and cellular automata simulation of corrosion behavior of ferritic stainless steel in molten aluminum

The corrosion behavior of feritic stainless steel(446)after being immersed in molten Al alloy at 750℃ for 1,2,4,and 8 h has been investigated experimentally and theoretically.The microstructure and composition distribution at the corrosion interface were characterized using the optical microscope,scanning electron microscope,and energy dispersive spectrometer.The results showed that Cr and Si synergistically delay the progress of corrosion at the interface of the intermetallic compounds(IMC).In the early stage of corrosion,Si element was enriched at the interface of IMC1 and IMC2,and the diffusion channels of Al element were occupied by it.However,as the corrosion progresses,Cr and Si gradually gather to form a band-like structure and coarsen,causing their hindering effect to be weakened.As the corrosion time increases,the banded structure was further aggregated and coarsened,and the inhibitory effect of Cr and Si elements on corrosion was strongly weakened.In addition,based on the cellular automata dynamics model of reaction-diffusion,the corrosion process of ferritic stainless steel in aluminum alloy melts was simulated.It is demonstrated that if there is no stabilizing effect of Cr element,the thickness of IMC will be doubled.

Enzymes are essential biological elements that play vital roles in many key cellular events and physiological processes.The dysregulation of enzyme activity broadly occurs in a large number of diseases ranging from inflammation to neurodegenerative disorders to tumors.Molecular imaging allows accurate and noninvasive visualization of biological analytes/physiological processes of interest closely linked to human health at different levels.Among various imaging modalities,optical imaging stands out benefited from its high sensitivity,excellent spatiotemporal resolution,real-time mode,and facile accessibility.Diverse optical probes specifically activatable by disease-relevant enzymes have sprung up.In comparison to the“always-on”counterparts,the“off-on”imaging probes activated by enzymes hold great promise for precise diagnosis of diseases at early stage with high target-to-background ratio,dramatically improved specificity,and significantly enhanced sensitivity.Herein,the most recent advances in optical probes activatable by enzymes for biosensing and bioimaging are briefly reviewed emphasizing their molecular design,working mechanism,and biomedical applications.Besides,some important prospects and the current challenges to fully implement the potential of enzyme-activatable probes for precise and efficient theranostics in life science are also pointed out to hopefully arouse new insights into the development of new generation of theranostics.

Melatonin is an effective antioxidant hormone produced mainly by the pineal gland.Premature senescence refers to senescence induced by declined cell proliferation and physiological functions when cells are stimulated by nontelomeric signals.The anti-aging effect of melatonin is exerted by upregulating the expression of silent information regulator 1/Sirtuin 1(SIRT1),which reduces oxidative stress damage,decreases p53 activation,and inhibits the NF-κB pathway.Radiation can induce premature senescence through direct or indirect oxidative stress damage.The mechanism by which melatonin regulates radiation-induced premature senescence includes the inhibition of the p53-mediated senescence pathway through elimination of reactive oxygen species or p53 deacetylation induced by upregulation of SIRT1 expression.Melatonin exhibits different regulatory effects for different cells and types of radiation.
