Objective:To investigate the relationship between ambient sulfur dioxide(SO2)exposure and semen quality ***:A systematic literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies investigating the association between SO2 exposure and semen quality *** search encompassed the timeframe from January 2000 to May 2023 and included electronic databases such as Web of Science,Google Scholar,PubMed,Cochrane,and *** effect estimates with 95%confidence intervals(CI)were calculated using percent changes(PC).The meta-analysis included seven studies with 6711 participants and 15087 semen ***:The results revealed a significant negative association between ambient SO2 exposure and certain semen quality *** particular,SO2 exposure was associated with a significant decrease in progressive motility(PC=0.032;95%CI:-0.063 to-0.001;P=0.044)and sperm concentration(PC=-0.020;95%CI:-0.036 to-0.005;P=0.012).However,no statistically significant associations were observed for total sperm count(PC=-0.038;95%CI:-0.079 to 0.003;P=0.070),seminal fluid volume(PC=-0.009;95%CI:-0.048 to-0.030;P=0.662)and sperm motility(PC=-0.17;95%CI:-0.363 to 0.022;P=0.830).In addition,the results of the subgroup analysis revealed specific variables that were associated with the decrease in relevant sperm ***:This systematic review and meta-analysis provides compelling evidence supporting a consistent negative association between exposure to ambient SO2 and semen quality parameters.

AIM:To compare outcomes of applying preservative free artificial tears(PFAT)with and without hyaluronic acid(HA)in early postoperative course following photorefractive keratectomy(PRK).METHODS:In this triple-blinded randomized clinical trial,PRK procedure was performed on both eyes of 230 *** PRK,patients were divided into three groups:the HA^(+)group,44 patients PFAT containing HA;the HA-group,71 patients PFAT without HA were administered 5 times per day(every 4 h);the third group,115 patients received no PFAT before lens *** the 1st and 4th postoperative day,Visual Analogue Score(VAS)was utilized to evaluate patient’s level of *** were asked to complete a questionnaire about the severity of eye discomfort ranked from 0 to 10(0=no complaint;10=most severe complaint experienced).RESULTS:In eyes receiving PFAT with or without HA(Drop group),mean scores for epiphora,foreign body sensation,and blurred vision on the 1st postoperative day were statistically lower(P<0.05).Filamentous keratitis(FK)was detected in 11(4.7%)eyes,and recurrent corneal erosion(RCE)was observed in 5(2.1%)*** the control group,FK was noted in 16(6.9%)eyes while 13(5.6%)eyes had RCE and 5(2.1%)eyes had corneal *** rate of complications was statistically lower in Drop group(P=0.009).However,the aforementioned scores were not statically different between HA^(+)and HA-group one and two(P=0.29).CONCLUSION:Following PRK,applying PFAT with and without HA yields faster visual recovery,decreases postoperative ocular discomfor t and haze formation;however there is no additive effect for HA.

Telemedicine is an emerging field in recent medical achievements with rapid development. The ＂smartphone＂ availability has increased in both developed and developing counffies even among people in rural and remotes areas. Telebased services can be used for screening ophthalmic diseases and also monitoring patients with known diseases. Electronic ophthalmologic records of the patients including captured images by smartphones from anterior and posterior segments of the eye will be evaluated by ophthalmologists, and if patients require further evaluations, they will be referred to experts in the relevant field. Eye diseases such as cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity are the most common causes of blindness in many countries and beneficial use of teleophthalmology with smartphones will be a good way to achieve the aim of VISION 2020 all over the world. Numerous studies have shown that teleophthalmology is similar to the conventional eye care system in clinical outcomes and even provides more patient satisfaction as it saves time and cost, This review explains how teleophthalmology helps to improve patient outcomes through smartphones.

Stable channel analysis with sediment transport for rivers in Malaysia:A case study of the Muda,Kurau,and Langat rivers

Assessments of a stable channel were done to evaluate the conditions of three rivers in Malaysia,using an analytical method that modifies the stable channel flowchart developed by Chang(1988) and Ariffin(2004).The analytical approach was selected to calculate the suitable dimensions for a stable channel,using equations that describe the physical relation of sediment transport,flow resistance,and dynamic *** field data were used as the input data for the stable channel program,which then processed the data until the input discharge was equal to the output ***,this method depends on the accuracy of the sediment transport equation that is used in the stable channel *** equations recommended by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage(DID),Malaysia,were found to be unsuitable because of their low discrepancy ratio(DR) values,which were below 42%.These are the equations of Engelund and Hansen(1967) and Yang(1979),as well as existing local equations from Ariffin(2004) and Sinnakaudan et al.(2006).Therefore,revised equations were developed in the current study to increase the accuracy of the total bed material load equations for use in Malaysian *** newly revised Ariffin(2004) and Sinnakaudan et al.(2006) equations yielded better DRs of 66.34 and 64.49%,*** assessments done on the Kurau River(a small river),the Muda River(a medium-size river),and the Langat River(a large river) show that these rivers have experienced different levels of *** the Kurau River was found to have minimal erosion and sedimentation ***,stable channel assessments for the Muda River and the Langat River revealed that both rivers had experienced severe erosion,due to excessive sand *** all the cross section sampling points on the Muda River and Langat River were deeper than the suggested stable channel heights.

AIM:To evaluate the diagnostic ability of topographic and tomographic indices with Pentacam and Sirius as well as biomechanical parameters with Corvis ST for the detection of clinical and subclinical forms of keratoconus(KCN).METHODS:In this prospective diagnostic test study,70 patients with clinical KCN,79 patients with abnormal findings in topography and tomography maps with no evidence on clinical examination(subclinical KCN),and 68 normal control subjects were *** accuracy of topographic,tomographic,and biomechanical parameters was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)and cross-validation *** Delong method was used for comparing ***:In distinguishing KCN from normal,all parameters showed statistically significant differences between the two groups(P0.05).CONCLUSION:In clinical KCN,all topographic,tomographic,and biomechanical indices have acceptable outcomes in terms of sensitivity and ***,in differentiating subclinical forms of KCN from normal corneas,curvature-based parameters(SIb and IS value)followed by integrated indices(PRFI and TBI)are the most powerful tools for early detection of KCN.

Effects of the Hydro-Alcoholic Extract of Nigella Sativa on Scopolamine-Induced Spatial Memory Impairment in Rats and Its Possible Mechanism

Objective： To evaluate the effect of Nigella sativa （NS） extract on memory performance and its possible mechanisms in scopolamine （Sco）-induced spatial memory impairment model using Morris water maze test. Methods： Thirty-two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups. The control group received saline instead of both NS extract and Sco. The Sco group was treated by saline for two weeks, and was injected by Sco （2 mg/kg, intraperitoneally） 30 min before each trail in Morris water maze test. Sco＋NS 200 and SCO＋NS 400 groups were daily treated by 200 or 400 mg/kg of NS （intraperitoneally） for two weeks, respectively, and were finally injected by Sco 30 min before Morris water maze test. The brains of animals were removed to determine the acetylcholinesterase （ACHE） activity and oxidative stress criteria in cortical tissues. Results： Time latency and path length in the Sco group were significantly higher than in the control group （P〈0.01）, while the SCO＋NS 400 group showed a significantly shorter traveled path length and time latency compared with the Sco group （P〈0.01）. AChE activity in the cortical tissues of the Sco group was significantly higher than the control group （P〈0.01）, while AChE activity in the Sco＋NS 200 and Sco＋NS 400 groups was lower than the Sco group （P〈0.01）. Following Sco administration, malondialdehyde （MDA） concentrations were increased （P〈0.01） in comparison with the control group, while cortical total thiol content decreased （P〈0.01）. Pretreatment with extracts caused a significant elevation in cortical total thiol content （P〈0.01） and reduction in cortical MDA concentration （P〈0.01） compared with the Sco group. Conclusions： Hydro-alcoholic extract of NS prevents Sco-induced spatial memory deficits and decreases the AChE activity as well as oxidative stress of brain tissues in rats. Our results support the traditional belief about the beneficial effects of NS in nervous system. Moreover, further investigations are needed for better

Objective:To explore the co-detection of natural infection of Trypanosomatidae parasites such as Leishmania and Crithidia in reservoir hosts of ***:Rodent populations were monitored in two endemic foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis of Fars province,southern Iran from March to October *** were trapped alive in several parts of Shiraz and Kharameh ***,their organs were prepared for detection of Leishmania and Crithidia species by molecular,microscopic,and culture ***:Totally,115rodents of five species;Tatera indica(***)(85),Rattus rattus(12),Meriones libycus(9).Mus musculus(7),and Rattus norvegicus(2),were trapped alive and their tissue samples were examined using microscopic,cultivation,and molecular ***,59(51.3%)rodents were positive for Leishmania or Crithidia *** highest rate(61.2%;52/85)of Leishmania infection was related to the *** *** cultivatioin,and molecular observations showed that two(2.4%;2/85)of ***(foot-pad,and spleen samples)were positive to ***:This is the first report of Crithidia infection in *** in ***,more epidemiological and ecological studies are needed to understand the role of Crithidia and Leishmania in ***.
