Common telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter mutations in hepatocellular carcinomas from different geographical locations

AIM: To determine the mutation status of human telomerase reverse transcriptase gene(TERT) promoter region in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) from different geographical ***: We analyzed the genomic DNA sequences of 59 HCC samples comprising 15 cell lines and 44 primary tumors,collected from patients living in Asia,Europe and *** amplified a 474 bp DNA fragment of the promoter region of TERT gene including the 1295228 and 1295250 sequence of chromosome 5 by using *** were then sequenced by Sanger technique and the sequence data were analyzed with by using DNADynamo software in comparison with wild type TERT gene sequence as a ***: The TERT mutations were found highly frequent in *** of the fifteen tested cell lines displayed C228 T mutation,and one had C250 T mutation with a mutation frequency up to 60%.All of the mutations were heterozygous and mutually *** out of forty-four tumors displayed C228 T mutation,and additional five tumors had C250 T mutation providing evidence for mutation frequency of 34% in primary *** the geographic origins of HCC tumors tested,TERT promoter mutation frequencies were higher in African(53%),when compared to non-African(24%) tumors(P = 0.056).There was also a weak inverse correlation between TERT promoter mutations and murine double minute 2 single nucleotide polymorphism 309 TG polymorphism(P = 0.058).Mutation frequency was nearly two times higher in established HCC celllines(60%) compared to the primary tumors(34%).CONCLUSION: TERT promoter is one of most frequent mutational targets in liver cancer,and hepatocellular carcinogenesis is highly associated with the loss of telomere-dependent cellular senescence control.

Thyroid status of iodine deficient newborn infants living in central region of Turkey: a pilot study

Background:Iodine deficiency (ID) during the fetal and neonatal periods can lead to neonatal *** study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ID on the thyroid hormone level of newborns living in ***:Between 1998 and 2013,71 newborns with a urinary iodine concentration 40 mU/L and fT4 <8.5 pmol/L) were treated with levothyroxine (n=26,T group),while the remaining infants remained untreated (n=45,UT group).Thyroid hormones were subsequently measured 7-14 days later in a sub-sample of both treated and untreated ***:The average values at the time of admission were as follows [median (min-max)].fT3:5.0 (2.8-7.1) pmol/L,fT4:7.7 (0.13-19.1) pmol/L,TSH:75 (14-426) mU/L,Tg:464 (226-1100) ng/mL,urinary iodine concentration (UIC):30 (0-61)zg/L,breast milk iodine levels:21 (10-150)zg/L,thyroid ultrasound (USG):1.10 (0.24-1.95) mL for the T group;and fF3:5.7 (1.7-12.7) pmol/L,fT4:16.2 (9.9-33.5) pmol/L,TSH:5.4 (0.63-41.8)mU/L,Tg:171 (15-2124) ng/mL,UIC:39 (0-90)pg/L,breast milk iodine levels:47 (10-120) μg/L,thyroid USG:0.75 (0.35-1.72) mL for the UT group.A significant difference was found between groups in respect to tT3,tT4,TSH and Tg *** significant difference in thyroid ultrasonography,UIC,and breast milk iodine levels was found between the two *** Tg levels of 50 out of 71 patients were measured,40 (80%) of whom had Tg levels above the normal range (101 ng/mL).Conclusions:In our country,despite the use of iodized salt,congenital hypothyroidism due to ID remains a *** Tg level of newborns can be used as a good indicator of ID.

Harvesting body heat using thermoelectricity provides a promising path to realizing self-powered,wearable electronics that can achieve continuous,long-term,uninterrupted health *** paper reports a flexible thermoelectric generator(TEG)that provides efficient conversion of body heat to electrical *** device relies on a low thermal conductivity aerogel–silicone composite that secures and thermally isolates the individual semiconductor elements that are connected in series using stretchable eutectic gallium-indium(EGaIn)liquid metal *** composite consists of aerogel particulates mixed into polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)providing as much as 50%reduction in the thermal conductivity of the silicone *** on the wrist,the flexible TEGs present output power density figures approaching 35μWcm^(−2)at an air velocity of 1.2 ms^(−1),equivalent to walking *** results suggest that these flexible TEGs can serve as the main energy source for low-power wearable electronics.

Transient Exergy Analysis of the Condenser and Evaporator of an Air Source Heat Pump Water Heater

In this study the performance of an ASHPWH （air source heat pump water heater） is assessed from exergy point of view in component wise. In order to investigate the work potential of energy, the destruction on the exergy is analyzed and results are summarized for the components individually. The exergy destruction of the system is studied by considering real paths of the pressure and temperature data which are collected during the experiments of the ASHPWH under varying environmental conditions. In the following step, the evolution of the exergy destruction of the system is calculated by a code which is compiled on MATLAB along these temperature and pressure paths. The obtained results reveal the importance of the transient exergy analysis by providing detailed information about exergy destruction of the system such as where it drives up and reaches up to its max and where it drops down and evolves on a smooth path.

Environmental monitoring in the Kaklik Cave (Denizli, Turkey)

The formation of caves is the special environment of our earth. Caves with dim natural light and lighted hypogean environments, have been found various organism. The Kaklik Cave located tectonic lines and has a very different way of formation when compare with many other same karstic formation caves. The Kaklik Cave is located in the area of Kaklik town in Honaz area and in Denizli province. The cave is one of the 54 cave opened to tourism in Turkey and endanger. In this study the cave climate, hydrol?ogy and biology were studied. The cave has specific species due to this formation, the entrance is wide and open to the sky, that makes the sunlight could go through a very wide area and cause of it is very rich about hydrology, these effects;provide a very high biodiversity to the cave. The cave has very important touristic potential because of the continuously growing travertine, geographical position, availability of access and natural beauties. The wrong artificial lightning badly changes the natural structure of the cave. This artificial lightning causes the biofilm layer and changing on the color of the travertine.

Robust Backstepping Control of a Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle under Colored Noises

Advances in software and hardware technologies have facilitated the production of quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs).Nowadays,people actively use quadrotor UAVs in essential missions such as search and rescue,counter-terrorism,firefighting,surveillance,and cargo *** performing these tasks,quadrotors must operate in noisy ***,a robust controller design that can control the altitude and attitude of the quadrotor in noisy environments is of great *** researchers have focused only on white Gaussian noise in their studies,whereas researchers need to consider the effects of all colored noises during the operation of the *** study aims to design a robust controller that is resistant to all colored ***,a nonlinear quadrotormodel was created with ***,a backstepping controller resistant to colored noises was *** backstepping controller was tested under Gaussian white,pink,brown,blue,and purple *** and Lyapunov-based controller designswere also carried out,and their time responses(rise time,overshoot,settling time)were compared with those of the backstepping *** the simulations,time was in seconds,altitude was in meters,and roll,pitch,and yaw references were in *** and settling time values were in seconds,and overshoot value was in *** the obtained values are examined,simulations prove that the proposed backstepping controller has the least overshoot and the shortest settling time under all noise types.

Selective recovery of rare earth elements by smelting of magnets

Rare earth elements(REEs)play a crucial role in many technologies from daily appliances in cell phones to more advanced wind turbines and electric *** magnets account for a quarter of total global REEs production and have high recycling *** this study,smelting process was used to selectively oxidize REEs in the permanent magnets by adding Fe_(2)O_(3).This separates REEs into a slag phase from an iron-rich metallic phase.B_(2)O_(3) was also added to the system as a flux to lower the slag melting *** minimizes REEs loss to the metallic phase and allows a more efficient phase *** effect of flux and oxidizing agent addition was investigated on both regular and cerium-rich NdFeB(NdCeFeB)*** 1350℃and for 1 h,the slag phase was successfully separated from the metallic phase with the addition of 0.8 stoichiometric amount of Fe_(2)O_(3) and 40 wt%of B_(2)O_(3).Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM-EDX)analysis reveals that REEs in the magnet do not migrate to the metal phase while the REE-rich slag phase contains almost no *** the selective removal of iron into the metallic phase,REEs are recovered from the slag phase through an acid leaching process allowing>99%of REEs *** in the magnet can also be recovered as useful boric acid by evaporation and crystallisation *** proposed process in this study is reagent and energy-efficient with almost complete valorisation of both NdCeFeB and NdFeB magnets.

Assessment of the implementation status of best available techniques for cleaner production in the textile industry

The draft Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control(IPPC)regulation mandates compliance with best available techniques(BATs)for textile manufacturers.A study in Turkish textile facilities,covering 56 units across four sub-sectors,assessed the status of 488 BATs through on-site visits and *** aim was to gauge the sector’s adherence to *** findings revealed that 37% of surveyed BATs were fully implemented,rising to 88% when considering potential future *** suggests a strong industry inclination toward adopting BATs for cleaner production and *** study highlighted significant BAT-related investments in the textile sector,driven by environmental concerns,regulations,customer demands,resource efficiency,competition,and cost-benefit ***,the study results also indicated that there is still much work to do for the implementation of some *** was found that 60 BATs had lower implementation ratios(IR:0%-43%).Lower IR values for these BATs are mainly due to factors like specificity,high costs,long payback periods,operational difficulties,limited expertise,space constraints,customer requirements,quality concerns,operational issues,and sector-specific *** study recommends similar assessments in other European industrial sectors to evaluate compliance with mandatory BATs outlined in the Industrial Emissions *** insights from this study on the Turkish textile sector can serve as a valuable guide for future evaluations.
