Elevated ferritin Levels and the Relationship with fasting Insulin Levels in Elderly Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

Introduction: Elevated serum ferritin levels are associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) as well as systemic inflammation and cardiovascular disease. The associations between ferritin and hemoglobin levels with individual components of MetS are unclear. The aims of the study were 1) to compare the ferritin levels, and 2) to investigate the relationships between ferritin, high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP), fasting glucose, fasting insulin and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) levels in elderly patients. Subjects and Methods: Study population included 121 (mean age 64.3 ± 14.1 yrs) (80 female, 41 male) elderly patients. The study population was evaluated for MetS by Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII). Demographic and biochemical data such as fasting insulin, hs-CRP, fasting glucose and ferritin levels were evaluated. Biochemical data were evaluated retrospectively. Insulin resistance (IR) was estimated using the HOMA. Results: Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 39 elderly patients (32.2%). In elderly patients with MetS, mean levels of ferritin, hs-CRP, fasting glucose, fasting insulin and HOMA were found to be 72.9 ± 33.1 ng/ml, 0.90 ± 0.01, 99.1 ± 20.1 mg/dl, 13.4 ± 1.1 μU/l, 3.0 ± 0.1, respectively. However, mean levels of ferritin, hs-CRP, fasting glucose, fasting insulin and HOMA were found to be 54.1 ± 33.1 ng/ml, 0.67 ± 0.1, 91.9 ± 17.0 mg/dl, 8.4 ± 2.7 μU/l, 2.71 ± 0.9, in the other elderly patients, (p?= 0.0012), (p?= 0.70), (p?= 0.70), (p?= 0.003), (p?= 0.80) respectively. Mean levels of ferritin were positively correlated with diastolic (r = 0.850,?p =?0.03), systolic blood pressures (r = 0.700,?p =?0.02), and fasting insulin (r = 0.444,?p =?0.003) in elderly with MetS. Conclusions: Mean levels of ferritin were increased in elderly patients with metabolic syndrome. Most applications of surfactants depend on formation and characteristics of micelle. In this study we measured critical micelle concentration (CMC) of cationic surfactant N, N’, N’-polyethylene (10)-N tallow-1, 3-di amine propane (PEG-10 tallow) in aqua solution by using electrical conductivity and surface tension methods. The CMC value of PEG-10 tallow with two different methods was found very close to 1.40 × 10?3 M with electrical conductivity, and 1.41 × 10?3 M with surface tension. It also investigated the effect of inorganic salt (NaCl) and pH on micellization of cationic surfactant PEG-10 tallow. With increasing addition of NaCl, formation of micelle structure resulted in a higher CMC. However, at low salt concentrations smaller CMC value was observed comparing the critical micelle concentration of individual PEG-10 tallow. When it comes to the effect of changing pH in CMC of the PEG-10 tallow , it was clearly found that micelle formation or CMC of surfactant was independent on alkaline pH (between 6 and 10), but it was dependent on acidic pH (below 5).

Poly (acrylonitrile-co-vinyl acetate)/polypyrrole composite particles with uniform size and morphology have been synthesized using one-step polymerization that involves swelling and coating of polypyrrole (PPy) into P (AN-co-VAc) latex nanoparticles. As an initial stage, free radical copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and vinyl acetate (VAc) was synthesized by emulsion polymerization using ammonium persulfate (APS) and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid salt (DBSA) as a surfactant. P (AN-co-VAc)/PPy composites were obtained first time by in situ addition of the pyrrole into the reaction medium. The electrospun P (AN-co-VAc)/PPy nanofibers were obtained from the nanoparticles with better properties and the effect of PPy on the morphology of nanofibers was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). High degree of homogeneity and molecular order induced by molecular dispersion of polypyrrole on copolymer matrix without phase separation improve the transport properties and stability of polypyrrole, which are critical for high-performance organic electronics.

Aim: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a major risk factor for both diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aims of the study were 1) to investigate the insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) and insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2) gene polymorphisms in patients with MetS and 2) to examine the relationships between gene polymorphisms and components of MetS. Patients & Methods: The study population included 100 patients with MetS and 30 patients without MetS as control group. Metabolic syndrome (MS) was defined as in ATP III. Entire coding exons of IRS-1 and IRS-2 genes were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Insulin resistance (IR) was estimated using the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). Results: In patients with MetS, 34 (34%), had G972R (rs1801278) gene polymorphism and 66 (66%) had no nucleotide substitutions at the IRS-1 gene (p circumference, blood pressure, triglyceride, HDL-Cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol and HOMA-IR levels. Conclusion: Insulin receptor substrate-1 and 2 gene polymorphisms were associated with metabolic syndrome but not its components.

A poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) based macroinitiator (MI) with terminal chloride atom at both ends was prepared by the reaction of PEG-400 with chloroacetyl chloride and used for the cationic polymerization of dodecyl vinyl ether (DVE) yielding ABA type block copolymer. The block copolymer was then used as the surfactant for the emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate and styrene in the presence of potassium persulfate as an initiator. The effects of new polymeric emulsifier on the physicochemical properties of obtained latexes were investigated depending on surfactant percentage in homopolymerizations.

AIM: To investigate the tolerance development against the relaxant effect of nitric oxide donating drug isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) and sodium nitropruside (SNP) in internal anal sphincter (IAS) smooth muscle. METHODS: Relaxation responses of ISDN, and electrical fi eld stimulation (EfS) were obtained before and after tolerance induction by ISDN incubation. RESULTS: ISDN (10-7-10-4 mol/L) and SNP (10-8-10-4 mol/L) caused a concentration-dependent relaxation on the basal tonus of the isolated rabbit IAS strips. After a period of 2 h incubation of the 6 x 10-4 mol/L ISDN the relaxation effects of ISDN and SNP did not change compared to control strips. EfS evoked frequency-dependent relaxation in internal anal sphincter smooth muscle and Emax obtained from control strips were not changed in ISDN tolerance-inducing condition. In this study nitrate tolerance was not observed in rabbit IAS smooth muscle. CONCLUSION: This result shows that nitric oxide donating drugs relaxes the internal anal sphincter of the rabbits without the development of tolerance.

In this study, the emulsion homopolymerization system containing vinyl acetate, potassium persulfate, a new cationic polymeric surfactant and water was studied by the applying semi-continuous emulsion polymerization process. The effects of new polymeric emulsifier on the physicochemical properties of obtained vinyl acetate latexes were investigated depending on vinyl acetate percentage in the polymerization recipe, and two thermal initiators in homopolymerization.
