Epiretinal membrane related vascular changes in diabetic eyes evaluated with optical coherence tomography angiography

AIM:To evaluate the retinochoroidal microvascular circulation and anatomical structure of diabetic and nondiabetic patients with epiretinal membrane(ERM)with the help of optical coherence tomography angiography(OCT-A)and compare them with healthy control ***:In this prospective,cross-sectional study,a total of 165 eyes were evaluated,including 50 eyes of patients with diabetic ERM,54 eyes of idiopathic ERM(iERM)patients,and 61 eyes of healthy *** and disc angiography was performed by *** vessel density(VD)ratio was evaluated by dividing the VD of the foveal region by the VD of the parafoveal *** calculations were evaluated at the 95%confidence ***:Macula superficial VD values of ERM cases were lower than that in the control group,while foveal VD was higher in ERM *** deep VD values of ERM cases were lower in all quadrants,except the *** width of the foveal avascular zone(FAZ)area was significantly lower in the ERM groups,and the FAZ width was lowest in iERM *** superficial VD ratio was significantly higher in the ERM groups,but there was no significant difference between ERM *** deep VD ratio was significantly higher in the iERM group than in the control ***:Diabetic and idiopathic ERMs differ in their mechanism of formation and clinical presentation,as well as their effect on retinal vascular *** the relationship of increase of retinal thickness with vascular integrity can be demonstrated with OCT-A,then,OCT-A can be used as a guide for ERM prognosis.

Cementum is the outer-, mineralized-tissue covering the tooth root and an essential part of the system of periodontal tissue that anchors the tooth to the bone. Periodontal disease results from the destructive behavior of the host elicited by an infectious biofilm adhering to the tooth root and left untreated, may lead to tooth loss. We describe a novel protocol for identifying peptide sequences from native proteins with the potential to repair damaged dental tissues by controlling hydroxyapatite biomineralization. Using amelogenin as a case study and a bioinformatics scoring matrix, we identified regions within amelogenin that are shared with a set of hydroxyapatite-binding peptides （HABPs） previously selected by phage display. One 22-amino acid long peptide regions referred to as amelogenin-derived peptide 5 （ADP5） was shown to facilitate cell-free formation of a cementum-like hydroxyapatite mineral layer on demineralized human root dentin that, in turn, supported attachment of periodontal ligament cells in vitro. Our findings have several implications in peptide-assisted mineral formation that mimic biomineralization. By further elaborating the mechanism for protein control over the biomineral formed, we afford new insights into the evolution of protein-mineral interactions. By exploiting small peptide domains of native proteins, our understanding of structure-function relationships of biomineralizing proteins can be extended and these peptides can be utilized to engineer mineral formation. Finally, the cementomimetic layer formed by ADP5 has the potential clinical application to repair diseased root surfaces so as to promote the regeneration of periodontal tissues and thereby reduce the morbiditv associated with tooth loss.

Evaluation of Serum Trace Elements and Vitamin Levels in Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Single Centre Experience from Turkey

Aim: To determine levels of serum trace elements and vitamins, and to find out possible correlations between these elements and vitamins with thyroid function tests and thyroid autoantibody levels in patients having Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). Methods: The study included 51 premenauposal women with untreated HT, aged 18 to 56 years without any known chronic diseases or chronic medicine usage, and 27 healthy premenauposal women aged 19 to 42 years old. Trace elements (selenium, zinc, copper, iron levels) and vitamins [A, E, B12, 25-OH-D, 1,25(OH)2D and folic acid levels] were evaluated in patient and control groups. Results: Consequently, serum trace elements and vitamin B12 levels did not significantly differ in patients with HT and control group. Thyroid functioning tests and autoantibody levels did not show any correlation with the levels of trace elements, vitamin A, vitamin E and 25-OH vitamin D. A correlation was detected between vitamin B12 and Anti thyroid peroxidase levels. Conclusion: The negative correlation between vitamin B12 and Anti thyroid peroxidase levels may demonstrate the necessity to screen the patients with HT for atrophic gastritis. We believe that more comprehensive studies with larger sample sizes are needed in which patients are randomized according to their nutritional status.

Intention and hesitancy to receive a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine among pregnant women using a health belief model: A cross-sectional study

Objective:To examine the pattern of COVID-19 infection and vaccination,and to explore pregnant women’s willingness and reluctance to accept a booster dose of the COVID-19 ***:This was a cross-sectional,descriptive study with a convenient sample size using a structured questionnaire among pregnant women attending the gynecology and obstetrics department at Acıbadem mehmet Ali Aydinlar Hospital,Istanbul,Tü*** Health Belief Model scale was used to assess the intention and reluctance to accept a booster dose of the COVID-19 ***:A total of 145 participants,with a mean age of(33.5±4.8)years,and a gestational age of(30.9±7.3)weeks,were enrolled in this study.88.8%Received full doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination.47.8%Participants suffered from vaccine adverse *** Belief Model demonstrated a significant finding of perceived susceptibility(P<0.001),perceived severity of COVID-19 complications(P<0.001),and perceived benefits regarding a booster COVID-19 vaccination(P<0.001).Conclusions:Most pregnant women who received the COVID-19 immunization express a significant intention to receive a booster dose,regardless of the adverse effects experienced from the previous ***,a small percentage of the study sample express hesitancy about receiving the booster dose.
