Effect of changing mesopic and photopic light conditions on visual functions

AIM:To determine the effects of change in light conditions on refractive error and visual functions including visual acuity,stereopsis and contrast ***:This cross-sectional study was conducted in the optometry clinic of the Shahid Beheshti School of Rehabilitation on 48 students in *** of them had eye health and normal visual function and could have refractive errors or *** intensity of 4 lx was considered equivalent to photopic light condition and light intensity of 1 lx was considered to be equivalent to mesopic light *** amount of refractive error was checked by auto refractometer and its changes in mesopic light condition were subjectively ***,visual acuity,stereopsis and contrast sensitivity(in five spatial frequencies of 1.5,3,6,12,and 18 cycles per degree),were measured first in photopic light condition and then in mesopic light condition,by Snellen control vision chart,stereo butterfly test and the M&S technology monitor test ***:In the 48 student subjects with an average age of 22.69±3.56y,mean of refractive error as sphere equivalent,visual acuity and stereopsis were-1.25±1.74 diopters,0 logMAR,44.37±13.03 seconds of arc,respectively in photopic light condition while in mesopic light was equal to-1.56±1.75 diopters,0.12±0.09 logMAR and 50.62±33.35 seconds of arc,*** mean of contrast sensitivity measured at spatial frequencies of 1.5,3,6,12,and 18 cycles per degree in photopic condition was equal to 2.38±0.04,2.37±0.07,2.04±0.21,1.27±0.32,0.82±0.27 logarithm of contrast sensitivity,respectively and in mesopic lighting condition was equal to 2.34±0.12,2.30±0.16,1.84±0.28,1.02±0.28,0.63±0.24 logarithm of contrast sensitivity,*** analysis showed a significant difference between the two lighting conditions in all evaluated variables[refractive error(P<0.001),visual acuity(P<0.001),stereopsis(P=0.008)and contrast sensitivity(P<0.001)].CONCLUSION:The refractive

Receded near point of convergence as a predictor of mild cognitive impairment in the general geriatric population:results from a population-based study

AIM:To investigate the relationship between near point of convergence(NPC)and mild cognitive impairment(MCI)in the general elderly ***:The present report is a part of the Tehran Geriatric Eye Study(TGES):a population-based crosssectional study conducted on individuals 60 years of age and above living in Tehran,Iran using the multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling *** status was assessed using the Persian version of the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE).All study participants underwent complete ocular examination including measurement of uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity,objective and subjective refraction,cover testing,NPC measurement,and slit-lamp ***:The data of 1190 individuals were analyzed for this *** mean age of the participants analyzed was 66.82±5.42(60-92y)and 728(61.2%)of them were *** with MCI had a significantly more receded NPC compared to subjects with normal cognitive status(10.89±3.58 vs 7.76±2.71 cm,P8.5 cm(area under the curve:0.764,P8.50 cm undergo detailed cognitive screening for a definite diagnosis of *** this case,the necessary interventions can be carried out to slow down MCI progression to dementia.

Physicochemical properties of silver carp(Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)mince sausages as influenced by washing and frozen storage

Frozen storage of emulsion-type sausages may be one approach to avoid or reduce the use of sodium nitrite,which is associated with health *** carp(Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)mince(M_(0))was washed for 1(M_(1))or 3(M_(3))times and the impact of washing on the properties frozen storage(−18℃)during 4 months were determined and results were compared to those of conventional silver carp sausages(Mt).Lipid oxidation,as evidenced by changes in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and FFAs,took place during storage in the order of M_(0)>M_(1)=M_(3)=Mt with M_(0)being highly oxidized(P≤0.05).Total volatile base nitrogen formed during storage and the ranking for the quality loss was as follows M_(0)>M_(1)>M_(3)=***(M_(1)=M_(3))led to less hardness(P≤0.05).Mt had better redness,while M_(1)and M_(3)led to higher expressible moisture,water release and lightness(P≤0.05).Results indicated the lower sensory and consumer-liking properties of frozen M_(1)and M_(3)***,washing and frozen storage influenced silver carp mince sausages.

A new Al-based amorphous alloy with excellent corrosion resistance and high thermal stability was produced in the Al-Co-RE(Ce-La)*** this regard,two different amorphous-nanocrystalline ribbons:Al_(87.6)-Co_(6.4)-Ce_(3.8-)La_(2.2)(M_(1))and Al_(82.3)-Co_(10.1)-Ce_(4.8)-La_(2.8)(M_(2))were prepared using melt *** results reveal the supercooled liquid region(ATx)of 218℃which shows that the M2alloy has higher thermal stability in comparison to the *** M2ribbons present the superior corrosion resistance because of the formation of amorphous *** icorr,Ecorr,Epit,and Epit-Ecorrvalues of fully amorphous Al-Co-Ce-La metallic ribbons have a better trend of anti-corrosion performance compared to other crystalline and amorphous aluminum alloys.

Residual refractive errors in pseudophakic eyes and related factors:a population-based study

AIM: To determine residual refractive error after cataract surgery in pseudophakic eyes and its relationship with age, sex, and axial length(AL).METHODS: In this population-based cross-sectional study, the sampling was performed on individuals aged 60y and above in Tehran, Iran using a multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling method. Pseudophakic eyes with a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/32 or better were analyzed and their refractive results were ***: The mean spherical equivalent(SE) refraction was-0.34±0.97 diopters(D) and the mean absolute SE was 0.72±0.74 D with a median of 0.5 D. Moreover, 32.68%(n=546, 95%CI: 30.27%-35.08%), 53.67%(n=900, 95%CI: 51.23%-56.1%), 68.99%(n=1157, 95%CI: 66.96%-71.02%), and 79.73%(n=1337, 95%CI: 77.69%-81.76%) of the eyes had a residual SE within ±0.25, ±0.50, ±0.75, and ±1.00 D of emmetropia, respectively. According to the multiple logistic regression model, increasing age was associated with a statistically significant decrease in predictability for all cut points. Moreover, the predictability based on all cut points was significantly lower in individuals with an AL longer than 24.5 mm than in those with an AL between 22 to 24.5 ***: Based on the results, the accuracy of intraocular lens(IOL) power calculation is lower for those who underwent cataract surgery during the last 5y in Tehran, Iran. Among the most important influential factors, the choice of IOL or it's power disproportionate to eye conditions and age can be mentioned.

In this research,a promising class of insensitive and high-energy dense biopolymers,which contain nitrogen-rich 1H-tetrazol-1-yl acetate and nitrate ester functional groups,was successfully synthesized through tetrazole derivatization and nitration of cellulose and its micro-sized derivative(TNCN and TCMCN).Their molecular structures,physicochemical properties,thermal behaviors,mechanical sensitivities and detonation performances were studied and compared to those of the corresponding nitrocellulose and nitrated micro-sized cellulose(NCN and CMCN).The developed energetic TNCN and TCMCN exhibited insensitive character with excellent features such as density of 1.710 g/cm3and 1.726 g/cm3,nitrogen content of 20.95%and 22.59%,and detonation velocity of 7552 m/s and 7786 m/s,respectively,and thereby demonstrate their potential applications as new generation of energetic biopolymers to substitute the common ***,thermal results showed that the designed nitrated and chemical modified cellulosic biopolymers displayed good thermal stability with multistep decomposition *** results enrich future prospects for the design of promising insensitive and high-energy dense cellulose-rich materials and commence a new chapter in this field.

Objective We aimed to investigate whether antagonism of the cannabinoid CB1 receptor(CB1R)could affect novel object recognition(NOR)memory in chronically rapid eye movement sleep-deprived(RSD)*** The animals were examined for recognition memory following a 7-day chronic partial RSD paradigm using the multiple platform *** CB1R antagonist rimonabant(1 or 3 mg/kg,i.p.)was administered either at one hour prior to the sample phase for acquisition,or immediately after the sample phase for consolidation,or at one hour before the test phase for retrieval of NOR *** the reconsolidation task,rimonabant was administered immediately after the second sample *** The RSD episode impaired acquisition,consolidation,and retrieval,but it did not affect the reconsolidation of NOR *** administration did not affect acquisition,consolidation,and reconsolidation;however,it attenuated impairment of the retrieval of NOR memory induced by chronic *** These findings,along with our previous report,would seem to suggest that RSD may affect different phases of recognition memory based on its ***,it seems that the CB1R may,at least in part,be involved in the adverse effects of chronic RSD on the retrieval,but not in the acquisition,consolidation,and reconsolidation,of NOR memory.
