Landslide Susceptibility Mapping along Bhalubang–Shiwapur Area of Mid-Western Nepal Using Frequency Ratio and Conditional Probability Models

Roads constructed in fragile Siwaliks are prone to large number of instabilities. Bhalubang–Shiwapur section of Mahendra Highway lying in Western Nepal is one of them. To understand the landslide causative factor and to predict future occurrence of the landslides, landslide susceptibility mapping(LSM) of this region was carried out using frequency ratio(FR) and weights-of-evidence(W of E) models. These models are easy to apply and give good results. For this, landslide inventory map of the area was prepared based on the aerial photo interpretation, from previously published/unpublished reposts, and detailed field survey using GPS. About 332 landslides were identified and mapped, among which 226(70%) were randomly selected for model training and the remaining 106(30%) were used for validation purpose. A spatial database was constructed from topographic, geological, and land cover maps. The reclassified maps based on the weight values of frequency ratio and weights-of-evidence were applied to get final susceptibility maps. The resultant landslide susceptibility maps were verified andcompared with the training data, as well as with the validation data. From the analysis, it is seen that both the models were equally capable of predicting landslide susceptibility of the region(W of E model(success rate = 83.39%, prediction rate = 79.59%); FR model(success rate = 83.31%, prediction rate = 78.58%)). In addition, it was observed that the distance from highway and lithology, followed by distance from drainage, slope curvature, and slope gradient played major role in the formation of landsides. The landslide susceptibility maps thus produced can serve as basic tools for planners and engineers to carry out further development works in this landslide prone area.

Nepal was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25^(th) April,*** main shock and many large aftershocks generated a large number of coseismic landslips in central *** have developed a landslide susceptibility map of the affected region based on the coseismic landslides collected from remotely sensed data and fieldwork,using bivariate statistical model with different landslide causative *** the investigation,it is observed that most of the coseismic landslides are independent of previous *** of 3,716 mapped landslides,we used 80% of them to develop a susceptibility map and the remaining 20% were taken for validating the model.A total of 11 different landslide-influencing parameters were *** include slope gradient,slope aspect,plan curvature,elevation,relative relief,Peak Ground Acceleration(PGA),distance from epicenters of the mainshock and major aftershocks,lithology,distance of the landslide from the fault,fold,and drainage *** success rate of 87.66% and the prediction rate of86.87% indicate that the model is in good agreement between the developed susceptibility map and theexisting landslides ***,lithology,slope angle and elevation have played a major role in triggering the coseismic mass *** susceptibility map can be used for relocating the people in the affected regions as well as for future land development.

MAIN CENTRAL THRUST ZONE IN THE KATHMANDU AREA, CENTRAL NEPAL, AND ITS TECTONIC SIGNIFICANCE

The Himalaya, a fold\|and\|thrust belt in the northern margin of the Indian continent, is characterized by thrust tectoncis (Schelling and Arita, 1991). It consists mainly of three thrust\|bounded lithotectonic units: from south to north the Sub\|Himalayan imbricate zone, the Lesser Himalayan thrust package (LH) and the Higher Himalayan thrust sheet (HH) with the overlying Tethys Himalayan sequence. These units are separated by a series of propagated thrusts, i.e. from south to north the Himalayan Frontal Fault (HFF), Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and Main Central Thrust (MCT). These thrusts are splays off of an underlying mid\|crustal subhorizontal d$B;D(Jollement (Main Detachmen Trust or Main Himalayan Thrust), and were propagated southward with time. Among these thrusts the MCT is most important intracrustal thrust in considering the geological evolution of the Himalaya, and is controversial regarding its location and nature. In western and eastern Nepal the Higher Himalayan Crystalline sheet is thrust over the Lesser Himalayan rocks along the MCT. In the Kathmandu area of central Nepal also the high\|grade rocks of the HH with the overlying Tethyan sediments covers southward the Lesser Himalayan rocks, and form the Kathmandu nappe. In the north of the Kathmandu nappe the Higher Himalayan crystallines are skirted by the Main Central Thrust zone (MCT zone) which consists of green and black phyllites with sporadic garnet snow\|ball garnet and calcareous schist associated with characteristic mylonitic augen gneiss. The southern margin of the nappe is bounded by the Mahabharat Thrust (MT: Stoecklin, 1990) with a narrow zone of the LH which is cut by the MBT. But the relationship of the MCT in the north and the MT in the south is disputable and important (Arita et al., 1997: Rai et al., 1998: Upreti and Le Fort, 1999), and in the margin of the Kathmandu nappe the MCT zone has not been confirmed.

Rainfall erosivity is an indicator of rainfall potential to cause soil *** Melamchi extreme flood occurred on June-15 and recurred on July-31,2021 in *** these flooding events,a large volume of sediments were eroded,transported and deposited due to the high rainfall erosivity of the *** this study,the temporal and the spatial distribution of rainfall erosivity within the Melamchi River Basin was estimated and further linked to sediment discharge and concentration at various sites along the river *** daily rainfall data for the event year 2021 of the entire basin were *** was performed by post-flooding grain size *** result showed that rainfall and rainfall erosivity exhibit pronounced intensity within the Melamchi River basin,particularly at Sermathang and Tarkeghang,both located in the middle section of the *** average annual rainfall in the Melamchi region was 3140.39 mm with an average annual erosivity of 18302.06(MJ mm)/(ha h yr).The average daily erosivity of the basin was 358.67(MJ mm)/(ha h)during the first event and 1241(MJ mm)/(ha h)for the second *** the upper section of sampling,the sediment size ranged from 0.1 mm to>8 mm and was poorly ***,the lower region had smaller sediment ranging from 0.075 mm to>4.75 mm and also well *** smaller size(100 mm)sediments were passed relatively higher from the Kiwil(8.20%)and Ambathan(8.39%)river *** premonsoon and monsoon seasons,the highest sediment concentration was found to be 563.8 g/L and 344.3 g/L in Bhimtar and the lowest was 238.5 g/L and 132.1 g/L at the Ambathan,*** sediment concentration during the pre-monsoon was found to be higher than the sediment concentration during the monsoon season in the Melamchi *** more erosive regions in the basin were associated with the presence of highly

Background:The World Health Organization(WHO)End TB Strategy has established a milestone to reduce the number of tuberculosis(TB)-affected households facing catastrophic costs to zero by *** role of active case finding(ACF)in reducing patient costs has not been determined *** study therefore aimed to compare costs incurred by TB patients diagnosed through ACF and passive case finding(PCF),and to determine the prevalence and intensity of patient-incurred catastrophic costs in ***:The study was conducted in two districts of Nepal:Bardiya and Pyuthan(Province No.5)between June and August *** hundred patients were included in this study in a 1:1 ratio(PCF:ACF,25 consecutive ACF and 25 consecutive PCF patients in each district).The WHO TB patient costing tool was applied to collect information from patients or a member of their family regarding indirect and direct medical and non-medical *** costs were calculated based on the proportion of patients with total costs exceeding 20%of their annual household *** intensity of catastrophic costs was calculated using the positive overshoot *** chi-square and Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare proportions and ***,the Mantel Haenszel test was performed to assess the association between catastrophic costs and type of ***:Ninety-nine patients were interviewed(50 ACF and 49 PCF).Patients diagnosed through ACF incurred lower costs during the pre-treatment period(direct medical:USD 14 vs USD 32,P=0.001;direct non-medical:USD 3 vs USD 10,P=0.004;indirect,time loss:USD 4 vs USD 13,P<0.001).The cost of the pre-treatment and intensive phases combined was also lower for direct medical(USD 15 vs USD 34,P=0.002)and non-medical(USD 30 vs USD 54,P=0.022)costs among ACF *** prevalence of catastrophic direct costs was lower for ACF patients for all thresholds.A lower intensity of catastrophic costs was also documented for ACF patients,altho
