Solvent extraction is an important process in the nuclear fuel cycle. Trib.tyl phosphate(Tb.) diluted with dodecane is commonly used as a solvent for extracting heavy metals from nitric acid medium. Studies on hydrodynamics of a single drop, which is the smallest mass transfer entity, are required for b.tter understanding of the complex mass transfer and phase separation phenomena that occur in extraction equipment. In this study, drop formation at nozzles is studied using 30% Tb.-dodecane as the dispersed phase and dilute nitric acid as the quiescent continuous phase. Experiments are carried out to determine the drop diameter, jetting velocity, drop detachment height and drop detachment time for various dispersed phase velocities, nozzle diameters(1.91, 3.04, and 4.88 mm), and nitric acid concentrations(0.01, 1, 3 N). Drop formation is captured using high-speed imaging, which enab.es quantification of drop size, onset of jetting, drop detachment height, and drop detachment time. Experimental data are used to propose correlations for predicting drop diameter and minimum jetting velocity. The correlations are found to b. very accurate with average ab.olute relative errors b.ing 5.23 and 2.97%, respectively.

The present study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of b.ended rice b.an and olive oil on hyperlipidemic sub.ects. A total of 60 moderately hyperlipidemic patients (Total Cholesterol (TC) >200 mg/dl and/or Triglycerides (TG) >150 mg/dl) with an age range of 45 - 60 were selected from Mediciti Hospital of Ludhiana and were divided into two groups: Group A and Group b.containing 30 sub.ects each. The sub.ects of Group b.were given b.ended rice b.an and olive oil for a time period of 45 days and were asked to continue with their routine eating and physical activity pattern. The sub.ects of Group A were kept on their regular cooking oil. The serum lipid values were assessed b.fore and after the study. Additional parameters assessed included anthropometry, dietary fat intake and physical activity pattern. The results showed that there was an insignificant change in the average b.dy mass index (b.I) of the sub.ects of Group b.b.fore (27.0 kg/m2) and after (26.9 kg/m2) the study respectively. Also, there was an insignificant change in the lipid levels of the sub.ects of Group b.after the study. The levels of TC and LDL cholesterol decreased b. 3.7 and 9.0 percent respectively. Whereas, the levels of TG and VLDL cholesterol increased b. 9.5 percent in the sub.ects of Group b.after the feeding trials. Further, systolic and diastolic b.ood pressure of the sub.ects of Group b.reduced b. 2.9 and 2.3 percent respectively. An insignificant change was ob.erved in all the parameters of selected sub.ects. So, the present study recommends carrying out more long duration research studies to evaluate the effectiveness of this b.ended oil.

b.ckground: Involvement of the nail is quite common in psoriasis and at times may b. the sole diagnostic clue. However, the histopathology of nail psoriasis has not b.en adequately evaluated. A confirmation of the diagnosis is required in cases suspected to have nail psoriasis in order to plan longterm therapy. Ob.ectives: To assess the diagnostic significance and safety profile of nail b.opsy in cases with nail psoriasis. Methods: Clinical and mycological features were studied in 42 patients with nail psoriasis. Of these, 22 patients gave consent for nail b.opsies to b. taken and the histopathological changes were assessed. Results: Males were affected more commonly (57% ) with a peak incidence in the age group of 10- 20 years (29% ). Distal onycholysis, discoloration of nail plate, sub.ngual hyperkeratosis and fine nail pitting were the predominant clinical features. In the 22 b.opsies done, hyperkeratosis with parakeratosis (91% ) was found to b. the most common and hypergranulosis was the least common histological finding (36% ). Clinicohistological correlation was possib.e only in 55% cases. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stainingwas done for all b.opsies. Conclusions: Histopathological examination of nails is a valuab.e diagnostic aid, especially in the ab.ence of skin lesions. Examination of the PAS-stained sections is necessary b.fore making a histological diagnosis of nail psoriasis b.cause onychomycosis and psoriasis may show similar histology.
