A study of groundwater irrigation water quality in south-central Bangladesh: a geo-statistical model approach using GIS and multivariate statistics

Southern Bangladesh＇s irrigation and drinking water is threatened by saline intrusion. This study aimed to establish an irrigation water quality index （IWQI） using a geostatistical model and multivariate indices in Gopalganj district, south-central Bangladesh. Groundwater samples were taken randomly （different depths） in two seasons （wet-monsoon and dry-monsoon）. Hydrochemical analysis revealed groundwater in this area was neutral to slightly alkaline and dominating cations were Na^＋, Mg^2＋, and Ca^2＋ along with major anions Cl^- and HCO3^-. Principal component analysis and Gibbs plot helped explain possible geochemical processes in the aquifer. The irrigation water evaluation indices showed： electrical conductivity （EC）〉750 μS/cm, moderate to extreme saline; sodium adsorption ratio （SAR）, excellent to doubtful; total hardness （TH）, moderate to very hard; residual sodium bicarbonate, safe to marginal; Kelly＇s ratio 〉1; soluble sodium percentage （SSP）, fair to poor; magnesium adsorption ratio, harmful for soil; and IWQI, moderate to suitable. In addition, the best fitted semivariogram for IWQI, EC, SAR, SSP, and TH confirmed that most parameters had strong spatial dependence and others had moderate to weak spatial dependence. This variation might be due to the different origin/sources of major contributing ions along with the influence of variable river flow and small anthropogenic contributions. Furthermore, the spatial distribution maps for IWQI, EC, SSP, and TH during both seasons confirmed the influence of salinity from the sea; low-flow in the major river system was the driving factor of overall groundwater quality in the study area. These findings may contribute to management of irrigation and/or drinking water in regions with similar groundwater problems.

Studies in recent years have shown that aquatic pollution by microplastics(MPs)can be considered to pose additional stress to amphibian ***,our knowledge of how MPs affect amphibians is very rudimentary,and even more limited is our understanding of their effects in combination with other emerging ***,we aimed to evaluate the possible toxicity of polyethylene MPs(PE-MPs)(alone or in combination with a mix of pollutants)on the health of Physalaemus cuvieri *** 30 days of exposure,multiple biomarkers were measured,including morphological,biometric,and developmental indices,behavioral parameters,mutagenicity,cytotoxicity,antioxidant and cholinesterase responses,as well as the uptake and accumulation of PE-MPs in *** on the results,there was no significant change in any of the parameters measured in tadpoles exposed to treatments,but induced stress was observed in tadpoles exposed to PE-MPs combined with themixture of pollutants,reflecting significant changes in physiological and biochemical *** principal component analysis(PCA)and integrated biomarker response(IBR)assessment,effects induced by pollutants in each test group were distinguished,confirming that the exposure of *** tadpoles to the PE-MPs in combination with a mix of emerging pollutants induces an enhanced stress response,although the uptake and accumulation of PE-MPs in these animalswas ***,our study provides newinsight into the danger to amphibians of MPs coexisting with other pollutants in aquatic environments.

The freshwater prawn fishery plays an important role in the economy of *** fishery is mainly based on the culture of Macrobrachium *** culture fishery has been growing rapidly,thus,masking the dwindling capture fishery which is faced with serious environmental issues augmented by deleterious fishing *** the high prospects of the freshwater prawn aquaculture in Bangladesh,a lot of research is needed to ensure the sustainable development of the capture fishery which forms a key source of prawn aquaculture seed as well as provide a baseline for future *** prawn aquaculture in Bangladesh is based on traditional methods with continuous adaptations by the rural ***,numerous constraints to its full development are evident at all stages of its *** of quality brood stock,seed,feeds and poor technical knowledge at farmers level are but some of the impediments challenging the sustainability of this *** paper reviews the freshwater prawn fishery of Bangladesh over the last few decades and outlines approaches for the development of an ecosystem-based management of both the culture and capture sectors of this important fishery.

Optimizing BERT for Bengali Emotion Classification: Evaluating Knowledge Distillation, Pruning, and Quantization

The rapid growth of digital data necessitates advanced natural language processing(NLP)models like BERT(Bidi-rectional Encoder Representations from Transformers),known for its superior performance in text ***,BERT’s size and computational demands limit its practicality,especially in resource-constrained *** research compresses the BERT base model for Bengali emotion classification through knowledge distillation(KD),pruning,and quantization *** Bengali being the sixth most spoken language globally,NLP research in this area is *** approach addresses this gap by creating an efficient BERT-based model for Bengali *** have explored 20 combinations for KD,quantization,and pruning,resulting in improved speedup,fewer parameters,and reduced memory *** best results demonstrate significant improvements in both speed and *** instance,in the case of mBERT,we achieved a 3.87×speedup and 4×compression ratio with a combination of Distil+Prune+Quant that reduced parameters from 178 to 46 M,while the memory size decreased from 711 to 178 *** results offer scalable solutions for NLP tasks in various languages and advance the field of model compression,making these models suitable for real-world applications in resource-limited environments.

The Cross-domain Heuristic Search Challenge(CHeSC)is a competition focused on creating efficient search algorithms adaptable to diverse problem *** hyper-heuristics are a class of algorithms that dynamically choose heuristics during the search *** selection hyper-heuristics have different imple-mentation ***,comparisons between them are lacking in the literature,and previous works have not highlighted the beneficial and detrimental implementation methods of different *** question is how to effectively employ them to produce an efficient search ***,the algorithms that competed in the inaugural CHeSC have not been collectively *** work conducts a review analysis of the top twenty competitors from this competition to identify effective and ineffective strategies influencing algorithmic performance.A summary of the main characteristics and classification of the algorithms is *** analysis underlines efficient and inefficient methods in eight key components,including search points,search phases,heuristic selection,move acceptance,feedback,Tabu mechanism,restart mechanism,and low-level heuristic parameter *** review analyzes the components referencing the competition’s final leaderboard and discusses future research directions for these *** effective approaches,identified as having the highest quality index,are mixed search point,iterated search phases,relay hybridization selection,threshold acceptance,mixed learning,Tabu heuristics,stochastic restart,and dynamic *** are also compared with recent trends in *** work enhances the understanding of selection hyper-heuristics,offering valuable insights for researchers and practitioners aiming to develop effective search algorithms for diverse problem domains.

Tracking of microplastics distribution patterns and their characterisation in deposited road dust from Dhaka city,Bangladesh

The widespread presence of microplastics(MPs)in road dust has considerable concern regarding their potential risks to ecosystems and human *** the massive production of plastic,the erudition of MPs distribution patterns in various sizes of deposited road dust is still limited around the ***,the aim of this research is to provide an unambiguous picture of MPs distributional pattern,identification,classification,quantification,and features from road dust in various zones and types of roadways in Dhaka,*** study examined MPs in road dust samples with particle sizes ranging from 300 to 150 mm(Group-A),149-75 mm(Group-B),andunpaved road(325 items/5 g)>soil samples(294 items/5 g),roadside dust samples(284 items/5 g),and mid-road(283 items/5 g).By taking into account all sizes of road dust samples,the MPs were classified as fiber(70.26%),fragment(26.12%),beads(0.66%),films(1.32%),and foams(1.58%).It was found that adults inhaled MPs an average of 1612 items/day,while they ingested an average of 880 items/*** had an inhalation rate of 1232 items/day and an ingestion rate of 10267 items/day,which was 4e17 times greater than in other *** study identified 22 MPs polymer types,and SEM results show that MPs surfaces are being weathered into nanoplastics,creating a more hazardous environment.

Effects of florfenicol exposure on growth,development and antioxidant capacity of flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae at different developmental stages

Antibiotics are widespread in various environmental media,and may pose a potential threat to aquatic ecosystems and non-target aquatic ***(FLO)is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in aquaculture,and extensively used to substitute chloramphenicol with its strong sterilization and low adverse ef *** this study,flounder Paralichthys olivaceus,an important economic fish species in seawater was used as an experimental *** exposure concentrations of FLO(including environmentrelated concentrations)were set at 0,0.01,0.1,1,and 10 mg/*** fects of FLO exposure for 168 h on growth and development,motor behavior,antioxidant enzyme activity,malondialdehyde(mdA)content,and thyroid hormone level of *** larvae were studied in pre-larvae(1 dpf)and post-larvae(20 dpf).The results show that the short-term FLO exposure could promote the larvae growth to some degrees,but inhibit them as the exposure time *** pre-larvae,FLO at 0.01 mg/L could stimulate the motor nerve system and increase the swimming ability,but inhibited it at 1 mg/*** the increasing dosage of FLO,the superoxide dismutase(SOD)and mdA contents were elevated,reaching the maximum in the 1 mg/L FLO *** pre-larvae were more sensitive than the post-larvae to FLO in the environment,and the growth and immune resistance could be damaged with long ***-larvae were more tolerant to external pollutants,FLO at 1 mg/L could promote the motor behavior and reduce SOD and mdA ***,FLO can be used as an antibiotic at a proper concentration but as a drug to prevent disease in a long-term way.

Capturing transition and non-transition flows with a new shear stress transport model

A new Shear Stress Transport(SST)k-ω model is devised to integrate salient features of both the non-transitional SST k-ω model and correlation-based γ-Re_(θ) transition *** exceptionally simplified approach is applied to extend the New SST(NSST)model capabilities toward transition/non-transition ***’s stress-intensity factor R_(b)=|-uv|/k can be parameterized with the wall-distance dependent Reynolds number Re_(y)=√ky/v;however,as the Re_(y)is replaced by a“flow-structure-adaptive”parameter R_(μ)=v_(T)/v,the resulting R_(b)is capable of capturing various transition phenomena *** prospective stress-intensity parameter R_(b)=R_(b)(Re_(y),R_(μ))is incorporated in the constitutive relations for eddy-viscosity v_(T) and production term P_(k).The proposed formulation is intrinsically plausible,having a dramatic impact on the prediction of bypass,separation-induced and natural transitions together with non-transitional *** extra viscous-production term P_(k)^(lim) is added with the k-equation to ensure proper generation of k at the viscous sublayer when computing separation-induced transition over a Low-Reynolds Number(LRN)*** demonstrate that the NSST k-ω model maintains an excellent consistency with both SST k-ω and γ-Re_(θ) models.

Impact of industrial effluent on growth and yield of rice(Oryza sativa L.) in silty clay loam soil

Degradation of soil and water from discharge of untreated industrial effluent is alarming in Bangladesh. Therefore, buildup of heavy metals in soil from contaminated effluent, their entry into the food chain and effects on rice yield were quantified in a pot experiment. The treatments were comprised of 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% industrial effluents applied as irrigation water. Effluents, initial soil, different parts of rice plants and post-harvest pot soil were analyzed for various elements, including heavy metals. Application of elevated levels of effluent contributed to increased heavy metals in pot soils and rice roots due to translocation effects, which were transferred to rice straw and grain. The results indicated that heavy metal toxicity may develop in soil because of contaminated effluent *** metals are not biodegradable, rather they accumulate in soils, and transfer of these metals from effluent to soil and plant cells was found to reduce the growth and development of rice plants and thereby contributed to lower yield. Moreover, a higher concentration of effluent caused heavy metal toxicity as well as reduction of growth and yield of rice, and in the long run a more aggravated situation may threaten human lives,which emphasizes the obligatory adoption of effluent treatment before its release to the environment, and regular monitoring by government agencies needs to be ensured.
