Rice Transplanting Mechanization in Bangladesh: Way to Make It Sustainable

“Rice transplanter” has brought a radical change in the method of rice seedlings transplanting in Bangladesh. The machine is gaining popularity with the increase of labor crisis during the peak period of transplanting, reduction time of in-between crops, rapid urbanization and industrialization, and changing socio-economic status of the farmers. Alternatively, the traditional way of rice transplanting is labor-intensive and involves high drudgery. Mechanical rice transplanter is cost-effective and operation-friendly. It is suitable to plant young seedlings maintaining plant to plant and line to line distance which plays an important role in increasing yield. Moreover, it is easy to take care of the crops planted in rows. It helps in maintaining soil physical properties and is considered to be better from a crop management and productivity point of view. In malignancy of having an edge over the traditional broadcasting, the adoption rate of mechanical transplanters is low due to high primary investment, lack of knowledge in growing mat type nursery, lack of repair and maintenance facility to the end-users, and unavailability of spare parts. Imparting these, available supply, entrepreneurship development, and encouraging custom hire services may be some of the practical results for adding the rice area under mechanical transplanting. This review summarizes the problems and prospects associated with seedling rice transplanting, technological gaps in the adoption of mechanical transplanters in a sustainable manner, and future ways to make transplanters more user-friendly and cost-effective.

Determination of Optimum Seed Rate of Hybrid Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Varieties in Mat-Type Seedling Raising for Mechanical Transplanting

Rice is the most important and crucial to ensuring food and dietary energy security in most developing countries and is the staple food of more than half of the world’s population. This study was conducted to identify the seed rate of hybrid rice varieties for mechanical transplanting during Boro (irrigated dry season), 2021-22 season at BRRI research field, Gazipur. Slender grain type BRRI hybrid dhan3, BRRI hybrid dhan5, Ishpahani hybrid dhan6, and BRRI dhan89 were used in the study. The same growth medium was used to establish mat-type seedlings on plastic trays (280 × 80 × 25 mm) at seed rates of 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 g∙tray−1. Walk-behind type 04 rows rice transplanter (Daedong, model-DP 488) was used during transplanting in the field at the set of the plant to plant spacing of 140 mm while line-to-line spacing was fixed to 300 mm. The result depicted that regardless of the variety, seedling density increased linearly as seed rate increased, except for the 21 days following sowing. However, the seedling density of BRRI dhan89 decreased after the seed rate of 100 g∙tray−1 due to mortality. The seedling height of the BRRI hybrids dhan5 and Ishpahani hybrid dhan6 was significantly higher than that of the BRRI hybrid dhan3 and BRRI dhan89. After 21 days, the seedling height decreased significantly with the increase in seed rate. For the seed rates of 100, 110, and 120 g∙tray−1, identical numbers of hills per unit area and plants per hill were observed. On the other hand, regardless of the variety, the percentage of missing hills considerably decreased with the increased seed rate. The yield of the BRRI hybrid dhan5 variety was significantly higher at the seed rates of 100 and 110 g∙tray−1, although the yield of the Ishpahani hybrid dhan6 variety was comparable. An integrated framework for assessing renewable-energy supply chains using multicriteria decision-making:a study on Bangladesh

The depletion in non-renewable energy sources and a fast-growing population in Bangladesh are exacerbating the already existing energy scarcity,highlighting the need for an efficient and robust renewable-energy supply *** primary goal of this study is to evaluate the most optimized renewable-energy supply chain based on natural resource availability and government policies of *** the present study,four renewable energy resources,including solar,biomass,wind and hydropower,are studied and nine subcriteria are defined under four primary criteria for each supply *** for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution(TOPSIS)and VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje(VIKOR)are multicriteria decision-making approaches used in this study to compare and choose the best renewable-energy supply *** relative significance of four supply-chain criteria for primary renewable energy in this study,namely energy procurement,production,operations and maintenance costs,and social and environmental impact,is gathered via a *** results of this research,supported by a comprehensive sensitivity analysis,indicate that hydropower is the best renewable-energy supply chain,followed by wind as a compromise solution,biomass and *** study also demonstrates that no energy source can satisfy all supply-chain criteria alone;each resource is better for a specific criterion-solar is better for procurement,hydropower is significant for production and wind is remarkable for operations and social ***,to maximize output,renewable energy sources must be *** Bangladesh’s perspective,for the first time,by using TOPSIS and VIKOR together,this study offers significant insights to establish an efficient and sustainable renewable-energy supply chain for practitioners,academics and policymakers.

In the current study,a modified sol-gel route was used to produce undoped and Sm^(3+)doped(1 mol%,3 mol%and 5 mol%)ZnO nanoparticles(NPs).The study of opto-structural properties of Sm^(3+)doped NPs was carried out both experimentally and *** dissolution of Sm^(3+)ions into the ZnO lattice is obviously seen from X-ray diffraction(XRD)*** evolution with doping was studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)was carried out to confirm the prese nce of Sm~(3+)on the doped *** dopant quantity results in a redshift of the NPs along with a reduction in bandgap with increasing abso rption in the visible range,and a minimum of 3.18 eV of optical bandgap for Zn_(0.97)Sm_(0.03)O is *** spectroscopy reveals a drop in the recombination rate of electron-hole with increasing doping content till 3 mol%,followed by an increase of Zn_(0.95)Sm_(0.05)*** electron-hole pair recombination is revealed by the orange band in the luminescence *** analysis was also carried out with density functional theory(DFT).This work also unfolds the fundamental understanding of the structural properties of the synthesized NPs to enhance photocatalytic activity ***,photocatalytic activity for the optimum composition,i.e.,3 mol%,was assessed experimentally.

Electrical Load Forecasting Using Fuzzy System

To cope with the demand and supply of electrical load of an interconnected power system of a country, we need to forecast its demand in advance. In this paper, we use a fuzzy system to forecast electrical load on short-term basis. Here, we consider temperature, humidity, seasons of a year and time segments of a day as the parameters, which govern the demand of electrical load. For each of the parameter, we use several membership functions (MFs) and then apply the Mamd.ni rule on MFs and the output is determined by using the centroid method. Finally, the surface plot reveals the real scenario of the load demand. The difference between actual load and the output of the fuzzy system is found as +1.65% to -13.76%. The concept of the paper can be applied in interconnected power system of Bangladesh to reduce power loss, especially when generation is higher than the demand.

Costing Principles of a Denim Pant

Denim pant is a significant prospect for the RMG sector of Bangladesh with an enormous future. The pricing is the most important factor obtainable in the global competitive market without having any suspicion. It is difficult to exist in the apparel market without providing lowest costing of garment. The study focuses on the entire factor that is directly related to the FOB cost of a basic denim pant where includes fabric cost, trims & accessories cost, storing, cost of making charge, washing cost, testing cost, commercial cost and profit is shown chronologically. All the calculations of the study were done on the basis of an industrial frame work and both primary and secondary data were collected from six different denim pant manufactures and exporters. The study provided convinced principle of fabric consumption, thread consumption, CM calculation, required poly;cartoons calculations and costing were done very carefully. The study also provides potential wash and testing, so that the total price ranges can be contained as well as demonstrating total FOB cost. The manufacturers, exporters, retailer and consumers of denim pant will get the apparent method of costing and its parameter.
