Epalrestat improves motor symptoms by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the reserpine induced mouse model of Parkinson’s disease

Time-series prediction of shellfish farm closure: A comparison of alternatives

Shellfish farms are closed for harvest when microbial pollutants are *** pollutants are typically present in rainfall runoff from various land uses in *** currently use a number of observable parameters(river flow,rainfall,salinity)as proxies to determine when to close *** have proposed using the short term historical rainfall data as a time-series prediction problem where we aim to predict the closure of shellfish farms based only on ***-series event prediction consists of two steps:(i)feature extraction,and(ii)prediction.A number of data mining challenges exist for these scenarios:(i)which feature extraction method best captures the rainfall pattern over successive days that leads to opening or closure of the farms?,(ii)The farm closure events occur infrequently and this leads to a class imbalance problem;the question is what is the best way to deal with this problem?In this paper we have analysed and compared different combinations of balancing methods(under-sampling and over-sampling),feature extraction methods(cluster profile,curve fitting,Fourier Transform,Piecewise Aggregate Approximation,and Wavelet Transform)and learning algorithms(neural network,support vector machine,k-nearest neighbour,decision tree,and Bayesian Network)to predict closure events accurately considering the above data mining *** have identified the best combination of techniques to accurately predict shellfish farm closure from rainfall,given the above data mining challenges.

Kenaf cellulose-based poly(amidoxime) ligand for adsorption of rare earth ions

A well-known adsorbent, poly(amidoxime)ligand, was prepared from polyacrylonitrile(PAN) grafted kenaf cellulose, and subsequent characterization was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),field emission scanning electron microscope(FESEM) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS).The adsorption capacities of the prepared ligand for rare earth metals are found to be excellent, with adsorptions of La^(3+), Ce^(3+), Pr^(3+), Gd^(3+) and Nd^(3+) experimentally determined to be 262, 255, 244, 241 and 233 mg·g^(-1), respectively, at pH 6. The experimental values of the adsorption of rare earth metals are well matched with the pseudosecond-order rate equation. The reusability of the adsorbent is examined for seven cycles of sorption/desorption,demonstrating that the proposed adsorbent could be reused for over seven cycles without any significant loss in the original removal capability of the ligand.

Comparative Study of the Magnetic Properties and Glass-Forming Ability of Fe-Based Bulk Metallic Glass with Minor Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu Additions

Fe43MsCra5Mo14C15B6Y2 （M = Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu in at.%） bulk metallic glasses （BMGs） are synthesized using the suction casting technique, and the glass-forming ability （GFA）, microstructure, and thermal and magnetic properties of these glasses are extensively examined using X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, and vibrating sample magnetometer techniques. Among the four BMG alloys, Fe43NisCr15Mo14C15B6Y2 exhibits the lowest coercivity and the highest saturation magnetization, Curie temperature, effective magnetic moment, and GFA. By contrast, Fe43MnsCrlsMo14C15B6Y2 presents the poorest magnetic properties, such as the highest coercivity and the lowest saturation magnetization, Curie temperature, and effective magnetic moment. Fe43Cu5Cr15MolaC15B6Y2 demonstrates the lowest thermal stability and GFA. The observed thermal, structural, and magnetic properties of these BMG alloys are discussed in terms of the kinetics of BMG synthesization and the formation of different ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and antiferromagnetic phases.

Relapse typhoid fever in North-eastern state in Malaysia

Objective:To discuss the prevalence,clinical and laboratory presentations of relapse typhoid ***:All relapse cases were reviewed to identify the clinical and laboratory presentation of the relapse typhoid ***:Two hundred and forty six patients were admitted to a teaching tertiary hospital in North-eastern state of Malaysia and fourteen(5.69%) relapse cases were *** duration of relapse after the patient was discharged was(25.0±9.9) *** patients presented with fever,diarrhoea,headache,abdominal pain and constipation. The duration of fever before admission in the initial episode[(8.6±4.2) d]was significantly longer than the relapse episode[(5.0±2.5) d](P=0.019).Four patients have hepatomegaly in initial episode and ten in relapse episode(P=0.852).The defervescence days of initial episodes was (3.2±2.2) d,comparing to relapse episode[(2.0±1.8) d]which was statistically not significant (P=0.124).Conclusion:Assumption of the relapse typhoid fever is milder comparing to original episodes based on observation and is not supported by statistical analysis.

Adoption determinants of improved management practices and productivity in pond polyculture of carp in Bangladesh

Adopting improved management practices for rearing carp can play a vital role in developing the aquaculture sector of *** study identifies the factors that facilitate the adoption of improved management practices and their relationship with *** data was collected from 300 carp farmers through face-to-face *** management practices were divided into three categories:simple,intermediate and *** indicated that high adopters(those who adopted at least one simple,one intermediate and one complex practice)were only around 10%of *** adoption of improved management practices was influenced by spousal education level,training,extension contact,and off-farm income *** of high adopters was 38%higher than that of *** implications from this research included improving extension facilities from public agencies to facilitate adoption of improved practices and to increase and sustain productivity in carp *** the current extension approach and diversifying income sources among farmers will facilitate widespread adoption of improved management practices.

Serum Vitamin D and Bone Mineral Density in Children with Growing Pain in a Tertiary Hospital of Bangladesh

Background:Growing pain (GP) is the most common form of nonspecific, recurrent leg pain in children aged 4 - 12 years. The exact etiology of GP is not known. However, some studies have found an association between vitamin D and Bone Mineral Status (Bmd) status with GP in their study. Objectives: To assess the serum level of vitamin D, and Bmd and to determine their association with growing pain in children. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in the Department of Paediatrics, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Sixty children between the age of 6 - 12 years were included in the study from March 2020 to August 2021. Children who fulfilled the Evans criteria of GP were enrolled as cases and thirty age and sex matched healthy children were recruited as the control in the study. Informed written consent was obtained from patients and parents. Serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin-D levels and Bmd were performed among cases and controls and subsequently compared to see their association in growing pain. A preformed semi-structured questionnaire was completed for each participant which included socio-demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics. Appropriate statistical tests were applied for data analysis and performed by SPSS version 22. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered as significant at a 95% confidence interval. Results: In this study, 96.7% of growing pain patients had hypovitaminosis D and among them, the majority (86.7%) was vitamin D deficient. There was a significant association between vitamin D with GP compared to healthy control. Bmd was significantly lower in the lumbar vertebra (L1 - L4) and femoral neck region (both right and left) among GP children compared to the control group. Conclusion: From this study, it may be concluded that the majority of children with GP had hypovitaminosis D and low Bmd status compared to the control. Vitamin D deficiency and low B
