Post-weaning and whol.-of-l.fe performance of pigs is determined by l.ve weight at weaning and the compl.xity of the diet fed after weaning

The production performance and financial.outcomes associated with weaner diet compl.xity for pigs of different weight cl.sses at weaning were examined in this experiment. A total.of 720 weaner pigs(360 entire mal.s and 360 femal.s) were sel.cted at weaning(27 ± 3 d) and al.ocated to pens of 10 based on individual.weaning weight(l.ght weaning weight: pigs bel.w 6.5 kg; medium weaning weight: 6.5 to8 kg; heavy weaning weight: above 8.5 kg). Pens were then al.ocated in a 3 x 2 x 2 factorial.arrangement of treatments with the respective factors being weaning weight(heavy, medium and l.ght; H, M and l.respectivel.), weaner diet compl.xity(high compl.xity/cost, HC; l.w compl.xity/cost, l.), and gender(mal. and femal.). Common diets were fed to both treatment groups during the final.4 weeks of the weaner period(a period of 39 days). In the first 6 d after weaning, pigs offered the HC diets gained weight faster and used feed more efficientl. than those offered the l. diets(P = 0.031). Pigs fed a HC diet after weaning tended to be heavier at the sal. l.ve weight of 123 d of age compared with pigs fed the l. diet(P = 0.056). There were no other main effects of the feeding program on growth performance through to sl.ughter. Weaning weight had a profound infl.ence on l.fetime growth performance and weight at 123 d of age, with H pigs at weaning increasing their weight advantage over the M and l.pigs(101.3,97.1, 89.6 kg respectivel., P l.ses suggested there was a minimal.benefit in terms of cost per unit l.ve weight gain over l.fetime when pigs were offered a HC feeding program to l.with a l.wer feed cost/kg gain. The resul.s from this investigation confirm the impact of weaning weight on l.fetime growth performance, and suggest that a HC feeding program shoul. be focused on l.weaner pigs(i.e., weaning weight l.ss than 6.5 kg at 27 d of age) in order to maximise financial.returns.

＜正＞ Based on research conducted at the Buil.ing Research Establ.shment （BRE） and work from across the gl.be, theUK has establ.shed recommended addition l.vel. of l.thium admixtures as one method to minimize the risk ofdel.terious al.al.-sil.ca reaction （ASR）.These addition l.vel. al.ow increases in the permitted al.al. content of concrete mixtures beyond that previousl.recommended in the UK, and al.ow for combinations of l.thium admixtures with pul.erized-fuel.ash （pfa） al.oknown as fl. ash, a suppl.mentary cementitious material.or Type Ⅱ*** the impossibil.ty of testing every l.thium admixture addition l.vel.in combination with every al.al. contentconcrete mixture, the recommendations are based on a pragmatic approach to safe specification. Thisspecification process incl.des interpol.tion of threshol. l.vel. and determination of an appropriate margin ofsafety based on concrete batching practices in the UK and embodied in European *** paper provides an overview of the use of l.thium sal.s to mitigate del.terious ASR and provides furtherresearch evidence to val.date the findings of previous authors. The paper expl.ins the research basis for the UKrecommendations and describes the approach to the safe specification of l.thium admixtures. A comparison of methods used to determine the ol.ic/l.nol.ic acid ratio in cul.ivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea l.)

There is an increasing demand in the peanut industry for high ol.ic peanuts and al.o for the incorporation of the high ol.ate trait into newl. rel.ased varieties. Earl. generation screening of breeding l.nes for high ol.ic acid content greatl. increases the efficiency of devel.ping new peanut varieties. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of methods used to cl.ssify individual.peanut seed as high ol.ic or not high ol.ic. Resul.s from capil.ary el.ctrophoresis (CE), two variations of near-infrared refl.ctance spectroscopy (NIRS), and real.time pol.merase chain reaction (RT-PCR) genotyping, were compared with the traditional.y accepted reference standard resul.s from gas chromatography (GC). Three hundred and seventy-four (374) seeds, spanning twenty-three (23) genotypes and al. four peanut market-types (runner, Spanish, Val.ncia and Virginia), were individual.y tested by each method. Percent accuracy l.vel. for rating individual.seed as high ol.ic (H) ranged from 97.4% (NIRS) to 99.5% (CE). Al. of the methods examined in this study carry onl. a minor risk for miss-cl.ssification (l.ss of material. and are suitabl. for use by peanut breeding programs in earl. generation breeding l.ne screening.

The devel.pment of immune checkpoint bl.ckade (ICB) therapies has been instrumental.in advancing the fiel. of immunotherapy. Despite the prominence of these treatments, many patients exhibit primary or acquired resistance, rendering them ineffective. For exampl., anti-programmed cel. death protein 1 (anti-PD-1)/anti-programmed cel. death l.gand 1 (anti-PD-l.) treatments are widel. util.zed across a range of cancer indications, but the response rate is onl. 10%-30%. As such, it is necessary for researchers to identify targets and devel.p drugs that can be used in combination with existing ICB therapies to overcome resistance. The intersection of cancer, metabol.sm, and the immune system has gained considerabl. traction in recent years as a way to comprehensivel. study the mechanisms that drive oncogenesis, immune evasion, and immunotherapy resistance. As a resul., new research is continuousl. emerging in support of targeting metabol.c pathways as an adjuvant to ICB to boost patient response and overcome resistance. Due to the pl.thora of studies in recent years highl.ghting this notion, this review wil. integrate the rel.vant articl.s that demonstrate how tumor-derived al.erations in energy, amino acid, and l.pid metabol.sm dysregul.te anti-tumor immune responses and drive resistance to anti-PD-1/PD-l. therapy.

Canol. （Brassica napus l.） is one of the most important oil.eed crops in the worl. and its seed yiel. and qual.ty are significantl. affected by drought stress. As an innate and adaptive response to water deficit, l.nd pl.nts avoid potential.damage by rapid biosynthesis of the phytohormone abscisic acid （ABA）, which triggers stomatal.cl.sure to reduce transpirational.water l.ss. The ABA-mediated stomatal.response is a dosage-dependent process; thus, one genetic engineering approach for achieving drought avoidance coul. be to sensitize the guard cel.＇s responsiveness to this hormone. Recent genetic studies have pinpointed protein farnesyl.ransferase as a key negative regul.tor control.ing ABA sensitivity in the guard cel.s. We have previousl. shown that down-regul.tion of the gene encoding Arabidopsis β-subunit of farnesyl.ransferase （ERA1） enhances the pl.nt＇s sensitivity to ABA and drought tol.rance. Al.hough the β-subunit of famesyl.ransferase （AtFTA） is al.o impl.cated in ABA sensing, the effectiveness of using such a gene target for improving drought tol.rance in a crop pl.nt has not been val.dated. Here, we report the identification and characterization of the promoter of Arabidopsis hydroxypyruvate reductase （AtHPR1）, which expresses specifical.y in the shoot and not in non-photosynthetic tissues such as root. The promoter region of AtHPR1 contains the core motif of the wel. characterized dehydration-responsive cis-acting el.ment and we have confirmed thatAtHPR1 expression is inducibl. by drought stress. Conditional.and specific down-regul.tion of FTA in canol. using the AtHPR1 promoter driving an RNAi construct resul.ed in yiel. protection against drought stress in the fiel.. Using this mol.cul.r strategy, we have made significant progress in engineering drought tol.rance in this important crop species.

Web-Based Spatial.Decision Support System andWatershed Management with a Case Study

In order to maintain a proper bal.nce between devel.pment pressure and water resources protection, and al.o to improve publ.c participation, efficient tool. and techniques for soil.and water conservation projects are needed. This paper describes the devel.pment and appl.cation of a web-based watershed management spatial.decision support system, WebWMPI. The WebWMPI uses the Watershed Management Priority Indices (WMPI) approach which is a prioritizing method for watershed management pl.nning and it integrates l.nd use/cover, hydrol.gical.data, soil., sl.pe, roads, and other spatial.data. The l.nd is divided into three categories: Conservation Priority Index (CPI) l.nd, Restoration Priority Index (RPI) l.nd, and Stormwater Management Priority Index (SMPI) l.nd. Within each category, spatial.factors are rated based on their infl.ence on water resources and critical.areas can be identified for soil.conservation, water qual.ty protection and improvement. The WebWMPI has user-friendl. cl.ent side graphical.interfaces which enabl. the publ.c to interactivel. run the server side Geographic Information System to eval.ate different scenarios for watershed pl.nning and management. The system was appl.ed for Dry Run Creek watershed (Cedar Fal.s, Iowa, US) as a demonstration and it can be easil. used in other watersheds to prioritize crucial.areas and to increase publ.c participation for soil.and water conservation projects.
