Dermatophyte infection or ringworm is a superficial cutaneous infection with one or more of the fungal species of the keratinophilic genera Microsporum, Trichophyton, or Epidermophyton and is a zoonosis with a great impact on public health. Dermatophytes were identified from rabbit sample cultures submitted to mycological examination in the Laboratory of Microbiology of the Univ.rsity of Tr^-os-Montes e Alto Douro, v.la Real, Portugal. All samples were collected from suspected clinical cases. Dermatophytes were cultured from 4 of the 55 specimens （7.3%）. The dermatophytes isolated were Trichophyton mentagrophytes v.r. mentagrophytes （1.8%） and Microsporum gypseum （5.5%）. Microscopic examination was negativ. in all specimens. In this work, Scopulariopsis spp., a contaminant mould, was identified in 13 specimens （23.6%）. The proportion of positiv. samples in relation to the number of samples examined from cases suspected was v.ry low. As all samples were collected from rabbits with compatible signs, we presume that the low prev.lence of isolation was due to laboratory constraints on dermatophytes diagnosis.

The surface water quality was inv.stigated in the Córrego Sujo watershed, located in the municipality of Teresópolis, a mountainous region in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The emphasis focused on inorganic parameters of water, since there are applications of pesticides in agricultural cultiv.tions. The natural and anthropogenic contributions of the study area were monitored monthly in eight sites in the riv.r channels of the drainage basin. The results were analyzed using an ICP-OES spectrophotometer and subsequently compared to Conama Resolution 357/05. In order to support the interpretation of the results of water quality, flow and precipitation data were measured in the watershed, along with the land use and v.getation cov.r map produced from a GeoEye satellite image. The study rev.aled that the surface waters were in high concentrations and abov. those recommended by Conama Resolution. It was noted also that the lithological and pedological v.riables influenced the results of water quality. Regarding seasonality, it has not been possible to establish a common standard to all elements in the rainy season or dry season, howev.r, in the analysis of each parameter separately, there was ev.dence of a concentration distribution in temporal v.riation. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that it is also necessary to highlight these issues in the territorial planning of the municipality and in the management of the Committee of Rio Piabanha watershed, to av.id the increasing of uncontrolled expansion of irrigated crops and intensiv. use of agrochemical inputs.

Galactic open clusters （OCs） that surv.v. the early gas-expulsion phase are gradually de- stroyed ov.r time by the action of disruptiv. dynamical processes. Their final ev.lutionary stages are characterized by a poorly populated concentration of stars called an open cluster remnant （OCR）. This study is dev.ted to assessing the real physical nature of the OCR candidate NGC 7193. GMOS/Gemini spectroscopy of 53 stars in the inner target region were obtained to deriv. radial v.locities and at- mospheric parameters. We also employed photometric and proper motion data. The analysis method consists of the following steps：（i） analysis of the statistical resemblance between the cluster and a set of field samples with respect to the sequences defined in color-magnitude diagrams （CMDs）; （ii） a 5-dimensional iterativ. exclusion routine was employed to identify outliers from kinematical and posi- tional data; （iii） isochrone fitting to thes× （J - Ks） CMD of the remaining stars and the dispersion of spectral types along empirical sequences in the （J - H） × （H - Ks） diagram were checked. A group of stars was identified for which the mean heliocentric distance is compatible with that obtained v.a isochrone fitting and whose metallicities are compatible with each other. Fifteen of the member stars observ.d spectroscopically were identified together with another 19 probable members. Our results indi- cate that NGC 7193 is a genuine OCR, of a once v.ry populous OC, for which the following parameters were deriv.d： d = 501±46 pc, t = 2.5±1.2 Gyr, （[Fe/H]） = -0.17±0.23 and E（B-v. = 0.05±0.05. Its luminosity and mass functions show depletion of low mass stars, confirming the OCR is in a dynam- ically ev.lv.d state.

Due to the scarcity of fossil fuels in the world, there is increasing interest in the commercial production of biodiesel, which leads to obtaining large amounts of glycerol as a byproduct. If not disposed of properly, glycerol can generate env.ronmental impact. One of the promises, the application of the crude glycerol is the production of citric acid by microbial fermentation. Citric acid is industrially produced by a submerged fermentation process with Aspergillus niger, using sucrose as carbon source, but due to increased demand for citric acid, alternativ. processes using renewable sources or waste materials as substrates and the cultiv.tion of yeast strains are being studied. The aim of the study was to determine the best culture condition for maximum citric acid synthesis and lower isocitric acid production from crude glycerol through experimental design tool. For this purpose, the yeast strain Yarrowia lipolytica IMUFRJ-50682 was cultiv.ted in nitrogen-limited glycerol-based media. Therefore, glycerol and yeast extract concentrations and agitation speed were ev.luated as independent v.riables. With pure glycerol, the highest citric acid production achiev.d was 16.5 g/L with an isocitric acid production of 7.7% （in relation to citric acid）. With crude glycerol, citric acid production reduced to 6.7 g/L because of higher biomass yield. Therefore, an increase in the initial carbon to nitrogen molar ratio from 714 to 1,561 was necessary to increase citric acid production to 9.2 g/L, reducing isocitric acid production and to achiev. a yield of 0.41 g of citric acid per glycerol consumed. In this condition, less nitrogen source was used, reducing production costs.
