Frailty is generally defined as a clinical syndrome of decreased physiologic reserve which drives to increased vulnerability and susceptibility to different stressors together with poor recovery to homeostasis.[1]The relevance of frailty status in a wide range of prospective cohorts is mostly related to an increasing burden in both mortality,hospital readmissions,disability,and falls.

The present study describes the development and validation of a dissolution method for delapril （DEL） and manidipine （MAN） combination tablets, using a simulated absorption profile based on in vivo data for MAN. The suitable in vitro dissolution profile for this formulation was obtained using 900 mL of citrate buffer pH 3.2 at 37 ℃ ± 0.5 ℃ as dissolution medium and USP apparatus 2 （paddle） at 75 rpm. All samples were analyzed by a liquid chromatography （LC） method. Under these conditions, a significant linear relationship between the absorbed （calculated by deconvolution approach） and dissolved fractions of MAN was obtained （R=0.997） and an in vivo-in vitro （IVIV） correlation for this particular formulation containing MAN can be established. Validation parameters for dissolution methodology such as the specificity, linearity, accuracy and precision were also evaluated according to the international guidelines, giving results within the acceptable range. Therefore, the proposed dissolution conditions can be applied for the simultaneous release analysis of DEL and MAN from the solid dosage form, contributing to the improvement of the quality control of pharmaceutics and minimizing the number of bioavailability studies.

In animals, signaling behavior is often context-dependent, with variation in the probability of emitting certain signals dependent on fitness advantages. Senders may adjust signaling rate depending on receiver identity, presence of audiences, or noise masking the signal, all of which can affect the benefits and costs of signal production. In the cooperative breeding meerkat Suricata suricatta, group members emit soft contact calls, termed as ＂close calls＂, while foraging in order to maintain group cohesion. Here, we investigated how the close calling rate during foraging was affected by the presence of pups, that produce continuous, noisy begging calls as they follow older group members. Adults decreased their overall close call rate substantially when pups were foraging with the group in comparison to periods when no pups were present. We suggest this decrease was likely due to a masking effect of the loud begging calls, which makes the close call function of maintaining group cohesion partly redundant as the centrally located begging calls can be used in- stead to maintain cohesion. There was some support that adults use close calls strategically to at- tract specific pups based on fitness advantages, that is, as the philopatric sex, females should call more than males and more to female pups than male pups. Dominant females called more than dominant males when a pup was in close proximity, while subordinates showed no sex-based dif- ferences. The sex of the nearest pup did not affect the calling rate of adults. The study shows that meerkats modify their close call production depending on benefits gained from calling and provides an example of the flexible use of one calling system in the presence of another, here contact calls versus begging calls, within the same species.

Droughts that occurred in selected areas located in homogeneous regions of South America during the austral springs(SON)and summers(DJF)from 1982 to 2019 are identified using the Standard Precipitation Index(SPI).Four areas were analyzed for droughts in SON,and three areas were analyzed for droughts in *** areas in the Amazon suffered from the majority of their droughts during El Niño years,while most of the droughts in the areas of southern Brazil,Uruguay,and North Argentina occurred during La Niña *** southeastern and central-western parts of Brazil,droughts occurred during both phases of El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)and also during neutral ***,other processes besides ENSO are likely related to the observed *** droughts were investigated for each area and month,and composites of atmospheric and oceanic variables during both seasons were analyzed for the selected *** and large-scale field composites were examined to identify the main processes associated with dry conditions in the different *** features were related to the influence of high pressure over southern and southeastern areas and the divergence of moisture flux in all *** circulations contributed to subsidence over the dry *** large-scale influential features include SST anomalies,wavetrains over the South Pacific Ocean with centers of action over South America that produced subsidence in the study areas,and convection anomalies in the Maritime continent and surrounding ***,the droughts were associated with a combination of regional and large-scale features that produced subsidence over the analyzed regions.

Since 1960, the steppe regions of North Africa have been subject to an increasing desertification, including the degradation of traditional pastures. The initially dominant species （Artemisia herba-alba, Lygeum spartum and Slipa tenacissima） declined and were progressively replaced by other species （Atractylis serratuloides and Salsola vermiculata） that are more tolerant to the new conditions. It is not clear whether these changes are due to anthropogenic reasons or climatic determinism. We have carried out a statistical analysis of the climate to detect putative rainfall changes during the 20th century in the Algerian steppes based on data from 9 meteorological stations, including 2 Saharan stations （El Oued and Touggourt）, 3 pre-Saharan stations （Biskra, Laghouat and Ain Sefra） and 4 steppe stations （Djelfa, Saida, M6ch6ria and E1-Bayadh） located in the arid high plains, which represent the bioclimate diversities of the region. Previous studies suggested that significant rainfall changes for the 20th century only had records in the south of the Oran region. Most of the studies, however, looked at restricted territories over limited periods, and did not integrate the rainiest period 2004-2014. Our work is designed to integrate all the longest time series of meteorological data available for the steppe regions of Algeria. Our results confirm the spatial rainfall distribution （significant rainfall changes only recorded in the southwestern region） evidenced by previous studies, and reveal a decreasing rainfall gradient from northeastern to southwestern Algeria. Moreover, the results reveal a trend of significant decrease of rainfall in the southern Oran region, marked by two drought periods in 1980- 1985 and 1999-2003. However, with the exception of the southwestern region, rainfall overall has not declined since the beginning of the 20th century. Based on the photosynthesis-respiration reversible reaction and the available statistics, we attempted to quantify the planetary seasonal exchanges of CO2 between air and water from 1970 and compared them to the glacial ACC cycles as reported from ice cores archives. In 2020, the overall continental absorption (AW) was 8.0 giga tonnes of carbon per year (GtC/y). Emissions into the atmosphere (EW) resulting from mineral degradation by respiration and combustion of biomass and fossil hydrocarbons were 14.7 GtC/y, an increase of 2.4% per year since 1970. The continental surplus balance (-AW+EW) of 6.7 GtC/y was shared between the atmosphere, which received 5.1 GtC/y (GATM), and the ocean which absorbed 1.6 GtC/y. This ocean contribution (OC) corresponded to 17% of the 9.2 GtC/y emissions by combustion of fossil hydrocarbons (EFOS). Analysis of the ACC oscillations during 2020 in the northern hemisphere showed that the ocean absorbed 11.1 GtC during the warm season and outgassed 9.5 GtC during the cold season. Assuming proportionality to world population, the ACC, 414 parts per million (ppm) in 2021, would reach 584 ppm in 2080, still growing at a rate of 0.6% per year. The gain of atmospheric CO2 (GATM) and its absorption by the ocean (OC) were expected to peak at 7.0 and 2.2 GtC/y, respectively, in 2080. This increase in the availability of atmospheric CO2 resulted in improved yields of agriculture which more than compensated for the reduction by half of food-producing areas per capita from 1970.

Altered PIWI-LIKE 1 and PIWI-LIKE 2 mRNA expression in ejaculated spermatozoa of men with impaired sperm characteristics

In about half the cases of involuntary childlessness, a male infertility factor is involved. The PIWI-LIKE genes, a subclade of the Argonaute protein family, are involved in RNA silencing and transposon control in the germline. Knockout of murine Piwi-like 1 and 2 homologs results in complete infertility in males. The aim of this study was to analyze whether the mRNA expression of human PIWI-LIKE I-4 genes is altered in ejaculated spermatozoa of men with impaired sperm characteristics. Ninety male participants were included in the study, among which 47 were with normozoospermia, 36 with impaired semen characteristics according to the World Health Organization （WHO） manual, 5th edition, and 7 with azoospermia serving as negative control for the PIWI-LIKE 1-4 mRNA expression in somatic cells in the ejaculate. PIWI-LIKE 1-4 mRNA expression in the ejaculated spermatozoa of the participants was measured by quantitative real-time PCR. In nonazoospermic men, PIWIoLIKE 1-4 mRNA was measurable in ejaculated spermatozoa in different proportions. PIWI-LIKE 1 （100.0%） and PIWI-LIKE 2 （49.4%） were more frequently expressed than PIWI-LIKE3 （9.6%） and PIWI-LIKE 4 （15.7%）. Furthermore, a decreased PIWI-LIKE2 mRNA expression showed a significant correlation with a decreased sperm count （P = 0.022） and an increased PIWI-LIKE 1 mRNA expression with a decreased progressive motility （P = 0.048）. PIWI-LIKE 1 and PIWI-LIKE 2 mRNA expression exhibited a significant association with impaired sperm characteristics and may be a useful candidate for the evaluation of the impact of PIWI-LIKE 1-4 mRNA expression on male infertility.

Plant Cultivation: A Strong and Sustainable Response to CO2 Emissions

According to the quantities of plant and animal products placed on the world market in 2022, agriculture and forestry captured 20.1 ± 1.5 billion tonnes (Gt or Pg) of CO2, with a weighted mean duration of the corresponding storage of 10.9 ± 3.3 years. These figures are supplemented here by the unharvested above-ground and below-ground parts of plants that are left in place and increase the soil organic carbon pool. This brings the capture by cultivated whole plants to 41.0 ± 0.6 GtCO2, and the storage duration weighted mean to 26.3 ± 2.0 years in 2022. This was the largest global contribution to the reduction of atmospheric CO2 by amplitude and duration, which bio-remediated the global anthropogenic emissions totally, cancelling their influence on climate. The enrichment of the atmosphere with CO2 comes probably from the ocean, which could be a source and not a sink. Complementary approaches, freed from doctrinal preconceptions, should make it possible to clarify further the compensations of CO2 emissions by plants and their environmental consequences.
