This review focuses on the history and current state of the art optoelectronic applications of quantum dots involving light *** focus mainly on three areas of commercial,or potential commercial interest,including quantum dot light emitting devices(QLEDs,sometimes called QD-LEDs),lasing applications,and quantum computing *** main connection between these areas is the development of the science and engineering needed to achieve electrical excitation of the quantum dot in an optoelectronic device in order to achieve emission with characteristics particularly suited to the application in *** to the special physics of quantum dots,these materials are particularly well suited for both existing commercial applications,and potentially for future applications,such as single photon sources,spin cubits,or polarized *** conclude with an analysis of the future prospects for these exciting *** 30 years of progress since the Nobel Prize winning work on monodisperse samples of QDs,our goal is to highlight the current start of the art,discuss the current issues for each technology,and suggest future goals for the next 30 years for quantum dot research.

Objective To study the sensitivity and specificity of different staining methods to monitor apoptosis induced by oxidative stress in adherent *** Sensitivity and specificity of several common methods for apoptosis determination were evaluated (Apo2.7-expression, Annexin V-binding, TUNEL-reaction, poly-(ADP-ribose)-polymerase-(PArP) cleavage and single-stranded-DNA (ssDNA) staining). Apoptosis was induced by oxidative stress generated by hydrogen peroxide in 3 cultured cells types growing as adherent monolayer (MiaPaCa-2, Hep-G2 and human skin fibroblasts), necrosis was induced by depletion of cellular ATP using sodium azide. Cells positively stained by the respective apoptosis assay were quantified and alterations of cell morphology were monitored by fluorescence microscopy. The date was analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and significance test of correlation *** One hour after apoptosis induction significant cell fractions were positively stained for ssDNA (33% with MiaPaCa-2 cells, 35% with Hep-G2 cells, 56% with human skin fibroblasts). PArP-cleavage was less sensitive compared to the ssDNA-staining. Apo2.7-expression, Annexin V-binding and TUNEL-reaction were not applicable to detect early apoptosis induced by oxidative stress (below 2 hours), but were efficiently monitoring late apoptosis. Specificity of ssDNA-staining was complete with each cell type even 4 hs after induction of necrosis by the highest sodium azide concentration. In contrast, the same experimental conditions resulted in 50%-90% positively stained necrotic cells by using Apo2.7-expression, TUNEL-reaction or AnnexinV-binding. Surprisingly, specificity of PArP-cleavage was highly depending on the respective cell *** Our study prove that among the five methods investigated only ssDNA-staining allowed to completely differentiate apoptosis from necrosis, and is thus suitable to reliably detect early as well as late apoptosis. We investigate the magnetism of a previously unexplored distorted spin-1/2 kagome model consisting of three symmetry-inequivalent nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg couplings J_(■),J,and J′,and uncover a rich ground state phase diagram even at the classical *** analytical arguments and numerical techniques we identify a collinear Q^(→)=0 magnetic phase,two unusual non-collinear coplanar Q^(→)=(1/3,1/3)phases and a classical spin liquid phase with a degenerate manifold of non-coplanar ground states,resembling the jammed spin liquid phase found in the context of a bond-disordered kagome *** further show with density functional theory calculations that the recently synthesized Y-kapellasite Y_(3)Cu_(9)(OH)_(19)C_(l8) is a realization of this model and predict its ground state to lie in the region of Q^(→)=(1/3,1/3)order,which remains stable even after the inclusion of quantum fluctuation effects within variational Monte Carlo and pseudofermion functional renormalization *** presented model opens a new direction in the study of kagome antiferromagnets.

The Shangcheng stout salamander(Pachyhynobius shangchengensis) is a poorly known stream dwelling hynobiid salamander from China. We studied the reproduction, development and growth response of the salamander to different diets in captivity. Two females each produced two unique, striated egg sacs, with each containing 18 and 20, and 22 and 32 white eggs with an average diameter of 3.3 mm. Hatchlings(n = 27) had front- and hind-limb buds with interdigit membranes and a large yolk sac, and developed cornified finger and toe tips during further development. Metamorphosis occurred between d 441 and d 454 after hatching at an average total length of 94.8 mm(n = 21). These reproductive and developmental traits fit in well with the ancestral state reconstruction in hynobiids. If corrected for dry mass, feed conversion ratios obtained by feeding bloodworms(Chironomidae) to P. shangchengensis larvae and mealworms(Tenebrio molitor) to postmetamorphs, were very low(0.33 and 0.34 respectively), equaling a very high mass conversion efficiency.

Visualization literacy,the ability to interpret and comprehend visual designs,is recognized as an essential skill by the visualization *** identify and investigate barriers to comprehending parallel coordinates plots(PCPs),one of the advanced graphical representations for the display of multivariate and high-dimensional *** develop a parallel coordinates literacy test with diverse images generated using popular PCP software *** test improves PCP literacy and evaluates the user’s literacy *** introduce an interactive educational tool that assists the teaching and learning of parallel coordinates by offering a more active learning *** this pedagogical tool,we aim to advance novice users’parallel coordinates literacy *** on the hypothesis that an interactive tool that links traditional Cartesian Coordinates with PCPs interactively will enhance PCP literacy further than static slides,we compare the learning experience using traditional slides with our novel software tool and investigate the efficiency of the educational software with an online,crowdsourced ***-study results show that our pedagogical tool positively impacts a user’s PCP comprehension.

Physical separation processes are best understood in terms of the behaviour of individual ore ***,while different empirical particle-based separation modelling approaches have been developed,their predictive performance has never been tested under variable process ***,we investigated the predictive performance of a state-of-the-art particle-based separation model under variable feed composition for a laboratory-scale magnetic separation of a skarn *** scenarios were investigated:one in which the mass flow of the different processing streams could be measured and one in which it had to be estimated from *** both scenarios,the predictive models were sufficiently general to predict the process outcomes of new samples of variable ***,the scenario in which mass flow could be measured was4%more precise in predicting mass *** process behaviour of minerals present at concentrations above 0.1%by weight could be accurately *** findings indicate the potential use of this method to minimize the costs of metallurgical testwork while providing in-depth understanding of the recovery behaviour of individual ore ***,the method may be used to establish powerful tools to forecast mineral recoveries for partly new ore types at a running mining operation.
