Maintenance of Species Differences in Closely related Tetraploid Parasitic Euphrasia (Orobanchaceae) on an Isolated Island

Polyploidy is pervasive in angiosperm evolution and plays important roles in adaptation and ***,polyploid groups are understudied due to complex sequence homology,challenging genome assembly,and taxonomic ***,we study adaptive divergence in taxonomically complex eyebrights(Euphrasia),where recent divergence,phenotypic plasticity,and hybridization blur species *** focus on three closely related tetraploid species with contrasting ecological preferences that are sympatric on Fair Isle,a small isolated island in the British *** a common garden experiment,we show a genetic component to the morphological differences present between these *** wholegenome sequencing and a novel k-mer approach we call“Tetmer”,we demonstrate that the species are of allopolyploid origin,with a sub-genome divergence of approximately 5%.Using2 million SNPs,we show sub-genome homology across species,with a very low sequence divergence characteristic of recent *** genetic variation is broadly structured by species,with clear divergence of Fair Isle heathland Euphrasia micrantha,while grassland Euphrasia arctica and coastal Euphrasia foulaensis are more closely ***,we show that tetraploid Euphrasia is a system of allopolyploids of postglacial species divergence,where adaptation to novel environments may be conferred by old variants rearranged into new genetic lineages.

Designing lighting for zero-net energy buildings poses unique and fascinating design *** the challenge of providing lighting loads on the order of.1W/sqft2,these projects require toolsets beyond the typical scope of a light-ing design consultant,including detailed controls design and photometric pre-dictions of available *** new roles are part of a broader trend in lighting design as,driven by new code requirements and a general push towards high-performing buildings,lighting design is becoming a more technical,metrics-driven ***’s a delicate balancing act here,and indeed we have the same responsibility to these projects as any other:lighting that is comfortable and functional for the occupants,that supports the architectural gesture,and that is available within the project *** the task is not simply to design the absolute minimum energy density(although yes,also that),but rather to identify ways in which all of these constraints may be harmonized,and embrace the collaborative and iterative workflow that these projects *** case study is written for architects,engineers,owners and others that want an overview of the lighting design process for ultra-low energy density buildings.I’ll gloss both the absolute basics and the more esoteric technical details in favor of discussing practical techniques that we used successfully to further the project goals,and the trade-offs we confronted.

The global landscape in the supply,co-creation and use of geospatial data is changing very rapidly with new satellites,sensors and mobile devices reconfiguring the traditional lines of demand and supply and the number of actors *** this paper we chart some of these technology-led developments and then focus on the opportunities they have created for the increased participation of the public in generating and contributing information for a wide range of uses,scientific and *** all this information is open or geospatial,but sufficiently large portions of it are to make it one of the most significant phenomena of the last *** fact,we argue that while satellite and sensors have exponentially increased the volumes of geospatial information available,the participation of the public is transformative because it expands the range of participants and stakeholders in society using and producing geospatial information,with opportunities for more direct participation in science,politics and social action.

reliability-based congestion pricing model under endogenous equilibrated market penetration and compliance rate of ATIS

A reliability-based stochastic system optimum congestion pricing(SSOCP) model with endogenous market penetration and compliance rate in an advanced traveler information systems(ATIS) environment was proposed. All travelers were divided into two classes. The first guided travelers were referred to as the equipped travelers who follow ATIS advice, while the second unguided travelers were referred to as the unequipped travelers and the equipped travelers who do not follow the ATIS advice(also referred to as non-complied travelers). Travelers were assumed to take travel time, congestion pricing, and travel time reliability into account when making travel route choice decisions. In order to arrive at on time, travelers needed to allow for a safety margin to their *** market penetration of ATIS was determined by a continuous increasing function of the information benefit, and the ATIS compliance rate of equipped travelers was given as the probability of the actually experienced travel costs of guided travelers less than or equal to those of unguided travelers. The analysis results could enhance our understanding of the effect of travel demand level and travel time reliability confidence level on the ATIS market penetration and compliance rate; and the effect of travel time perception variation of guided and unguided travelers on the mean travel cost savings(MTCS) of the equipped travelers, the ATIS market penetration, compliance rate, and the total network effective travel time(TNETT).

Colonies of ants allocate exploratory individuals to where they are ecologically needed

Individual differences in behavior have large consequences for the way in which ecology impacts *** differ in how they explore their environment and how exploratory behavior benefits *** group-living animals,behavioral heterogeneity can be beneficial because different individuals perform different *** example,exploratory individuals may discover new food sources and recruit group members to exploit the food,while less exploratory individuals forgo the risks of *** we ask how individual variation in exploratory behavior affects the ability of Argentine ant Linepithema humile colonies to(1)locate novel food sources,(2)exploit known food resources,and(3)respond to disruptions while *** address these questions,we conducted field experiments on *** foraging trails in which we manipulated food availability near and at the foraging trails and disrupted the foraging *** sampled individuals based on their response to the perturbations in the field and tested their exploratory behavior in the *** found that exploratory individuals benefit the colony by locating novel foods and increasing resource exploitation,but they do not play an important role in the recovery of a foraging trail after ***,the benefits of behavioral heterogeneity to the group,specifically in exploratory behavior,differ across ecological contexts.
