A Functional Inhibitory Role of Habenular Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) in Forebrain Reward Signaling

There is emerging evidence implicating glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in reward, including palatable food reinforcement and alcohol-based reward circuitry. While recent findings suggest that mesolimbic structures, such as the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the nucleus accumbens (NAc), are critical anatomical sites mediating the role of GLP-1’s inhibitory actions, the present study focused on the potential novel impact of GLP-1 within the habenula, a region of the forebrain expressing GLP-1 receptors. Given that the habenula has also been implicated in the neural control of reward and reinforcement, we hypothesized that this brain region, like the VTA and NAc, might mediate the anhedonic effects of GLP-1. Rats were stereotaxically implanted with guide cannula targeting the habenula and trained on a progressive ratio 3 (PR3) schedule of reinforcement. Separate rats were trained on an alcohol two-bottle choice paradigm with intermittent access. The GLP-1 agonist exendin-4 (Ex-4) was administered directly into the habenula to determine the effects on operant responding for palatable food as well as alcohol intake. Our results indicated that Ex-4 reliably suppressed PR3 responding and that this effect was dose-dependent. A similar suppressive effect on alcohol consumption was observed. These findings provide initial and compelling evidence that the habenula may mediate the inhibitory action of GLP-1 on reward, including operant and drug reward. Our findings further suggest that GLP-1 receptor mechanisms outside of the midbrain and ventral striatum are critically involved in brain reward neurotransmission.

Magnetothermal Analysis of Nanocrystallization of Amorphous and Relaxations of Nanocrystalline Materials

For a few years it has been realized that nanocrystalline phases can be formed during crystallization of amorphous alloys annealed isothermally below the crystallization temperature of usual heating experiments. Data of this transformation monitored by the measurement of magnetic susceptibility are presented. A method using a magnetic balance with electronic stabilisation and combined computer facilities is applied. Constant heating and cooling rates as well as isothermal heat treatments are used. Magnetic measurements are able to detect the onset of the transformation of amorphous NI-P alloys much earlier than was possible with differential scanning calorimetry. The transformation kinetics can be analyzed by means of the Avrami plot based on the johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation. The kinetics of solid state reactions in the nanostructured material can be investigated similarly. Formation of a Ni-phase in a nanostructured Hf-Ni alloy could be detected in a very early stage, where calorimetric methods are not sensitive. Segregation phenomena could be detected from the experiments even after long time. The sensitivity of the applied method is not dependent on the heating rate as the sensitivity of scanning calorimetry is.

This study analyzed the difference between using a downward breaststroke kick and a horizontal breaststroke kick in a sample of world class elite *** compared average muscle activity of the gluteus maximus,quadriceps femoris(vastus medialis and rectus femoris),hamstring/long head of the biceps femoris,gastrocnemius medialis,rectus abdominal,and erector spinae when using the downward breaststroke kick *** find that when this sample of swimmers utilized the downward breaststroke kick,max speed and velocity per stroke increased,measured by 12,788 EMG samples,where the results are highly correlated to duration of the aerodynamic buoyant force in breaststroke kick *** increases in performance observed from measuring the world class elite swimmers is highly correlated to the duration of the kick aerodynamic buoyant *** this sample of elite swimmers,the longer a swimmer demonstrates a buoyant force breaststroke kick,the lower the time in a 100 breaststroke.

Synthesis of Some Azo Disperse Dyes from 1-Substituted 2-Hydroxy-6-pyridone Derivatives and Their Colour Assessment on Polyester Fabric

The synthesis of a series of 3-(p-substituted phenylazo)-6-pyridone dyes which is suitable for the dyeing of polyester fabrics, is described. Visible absorption spectra of the dyes were examined in various solvents and the compounds in solution exhibited hydrazone-common anion equilibrium. The electronic absorption spectra cover a λmax range of 404 - 464 nm in DMF at uniformly high absorption intensity between 5.33 × 104 - 8.55 × 104 lmol–1cm–1 and gave bright intense hues of yellow to orange on polyester fabrics. The colour parameters of the dyed fabrics were measured and the dyes have excellent exhaustion between 72% - 79% for polyester fabrics, more intense and of very good fastness properties on polyester fabrics. The remarkable degree of levelness and brightness after washing is indicative of good penetration and excellent affinity of these dyes for the polyester fabric.

Patient Education Level and Utilization of Internet Resources by Patients in Orthopedic Hip and Knee Consultations

Introduction: Internet has become an increasingly popular source of reference for patients to learn about their medical problems. It is easily accessible, and a large number of uncensored information is available online written from various sources and perspectives. However, the role of internet and its impact on patient’s care and understanding of the disease remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role and effect of internet use for patients seeking consultation for hip and knee arthritis. More specifically, the relationship between patient’s education level, internet use, motives for doing background readings, perception of internet information, and reactions to the available information will be studied. Method: Patients seeking orthopaedic consultation for knee or hip arthritis at the Toronto Western Hospital were identified and invited to fill out a questionnaire on their first visit. The questionnaire was designed to assess the patients’ pre-consultation reading habits, their use of internet, and their reaction to what they have read on the internet. The questionnaire also included questions about the respondent’s ***: In comparing patients holding college/university degree (CU) with patients having no college/university education (NoCU), the CU group were associated with increased internet use (CU vs. NoCU: 71.0% vs. 48.3%;p 0.01) and background reading (CU vs. NoCU: 82.2% vs. 17.8%;p 0.001) prior to consultation;fewer incidence of anxiety following internet use (CU vs. NoCU: 29.9% vs. 53.6%;p 0.05);and higher rates of decisions influenced by internet use (CU vs. NoCU: 20.8% vs. 3.6%, p 0.05). Internet users demonstrated a higher confidence in gathering and understanding medical information (Internet users vs. non-internet users: 6.59 ± 2.05 vs. 5.03 ± 2.78;p 0.001) and rated the accuracy of information on internet at 7.18 ± 2.01 (max = 10). The Straightness Backstroke Kick Makes Fast Speed and Increased Lactate Acid. A Case Study Using 3-Times Olympian

In this study, we assess the effectiveness of utilizing a straight knee kick in the backstroke with regard to the overall time, max speed, and distance per stroke when using a straight knee butterfly technique. We analyzed freestyle kick of knee angles from 7-Olympic medalists, 1970＇s S-shaped pulling pattern stroke was used with a bending knee freestyle kick. The straight knee kick used in butterfly competitions resulted in improvements from 54.74 to 51.00 in Men＇s 100-meter butterfly and fi＇om 23.43 to 23.02 in Men＇s 50-meter butterfly. Using a straight knee kick in backstroke competitions resulted in improvements from 1：01.74 to 1：00.55 in the 100-meter backstroke event. Increases in performance speed, max speed and distance per stroke among three elite level swimmers are highly correlated to duration of the kick resistance, and straight knee kick in backstroke. The straight knee kick also resulted in an increase in lactate acid.

Effects of Lean Beef Supplementation on Iron Status, Body Composition and Performance of Collegiate Distance Runners

Iron deficiency is prevalent among endurance athletes, particularly females. Low iron may compromise oxygen delivery and physical performance. Vegetarianism, desire for convenience, and perceived health risks associated with red meat contribute to low bioavailable iron intakes. The purpose of this study was to examine if lean beef supplementation would maintain iron status, improve body composition and increase performance of distance runners after 8 weeks. Twenty-eight (14 female) Division-I cross-country runners were stratified by iron status, use of iron supplements, and gender, and randomized into a control (n = 14) and intervention group. All participants maintained their typical diet and consumed a daily multivitamin, while the intervention group consumed 9 ounces of lean beef weekly. Dietary intake (total iron, heme-iron, protein, zinc), body composition, VO2max, and iron status (hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum iron, serum ferritin, total iron binding capacity [TIBC]) were measured at baseline and post-intervention. The intervention group had greater intakes of total and heme-iron. There were no group differences in amino acids, protein, or calories. Both groups had a significant body fat increase and lean mass decease over time. There was a significant VO2max increase over time in both groups. There were no group differences due to the intervention in serum ferritin, hemoglobin, serum iron, and TIBC. There was a significant difference in hematocrit between groups as a result of the intervention. In conclusion, increasing bioavailable iron from red meat may have effects on body composition and maintenance of blood iron markers;however, its direct impact on performance among endurance athletes is unclear.
