Hazard and population vulnerability analysis: a step towards landslide risk assessment

In this paper, an attempt to analyse landslide hazard and vulnerability in the municipality of Pahuatlfin, Puebla, Mexico, is presented. In order to estimate landslide hazard, the susceptibility, magnitude （area-velocity ratio） and landslide frequency of the area of interest were produced based on information derived from a geomorphological landslide inventory; the latter was generated by using very high resolution satellite stereo pairs along with information derived from other sources （Google Earth, aerial photographs and historical information）. Estimations of landslide susceptibility were determined by combining four statistical techniques：（i） logistic regression, （ii） quadratic discriminant analysis, （iii） linear discriminant analysis, and （iv） neuronal networks. A Digital Elevation Model （DEM） of lo m spatial resolution was used to extract the slope angle, aspect, curvature, elevation and relief. These factors, in addition to land cover, lithology anddistance to faults, were used as explanatory variables for the susceptibility models. Additionally, a Poisson model was used to estimate landslide temporal frequency, at the same time as landslide magnitude was obtained by using the relationship between landslide area and the velocity of movements. Then, due to the complexity of evaluating it, vulnerability of population was analysed by applying the Spatial Approach to Vulnerability Assessment （SAVE） model which considered levels of exposure, sensitivity and lack of resilience. Results were expressed on maps on which different spatial patterns of levels of landslide hazard and vulnerability were found for the inhabited areas. It is noteworthy that the lack of optimal methodologies to estimate and quantify vulnerability is more notorious than that of hazard assessments. Consequently, levels of uncertainty linked to landslide risk assessment remain a challenge to be addressed.

背景：免疫组织化学标记物有助于肿瘤诊断及预后评估。通过对硝基酪氨酸分析及采用一氧化氮合成酶1（NOS1）、一氧化氮合成酶2（NOS2）、一氧化氮合成酶3（NOS3）检测分析可了解一氧化氮（NO）与肿瘤的相关性。NO与超氧阴离子反应产生的过氧亚硝酸对基因有毒性作用，过氧亚硝酸传递一个硝基基团到酪氨酸的苯环上形成硝基酪氨酸。细胞内硝基酪氨酸的积累说明过氧亚硝酸持续生成。NO刺激所生成的环氧化酶-2（COX-2）与肿瘤内新生血管水平相关，研究表明新生血管影响肿瘤预后，免疫组化标记CD34可表示微血管生成，从而被用于预测肿瘤预后。本研究检测上述标记物在软骨肉瘤中的表达并分析与软骨肉瘤分级和预后的相关性。方法：101例软骨肉瘤患者肿瘤组织样本采用甲醛固定，组织样本采用免疫组织化学染色，指标为：NOS1、NOS2、NOS3、COX-2、硝基酪氨酸和CD34。5例正常软骨样本作为对照。研究分析患者特征、手术变量、肿瘤分级与这些指标的相关性。使用Kaplan—Meier多变量统计学方法分析生存曲线及生存率。结果：硝基酪氨酸、COX-2和CD34与组织学分级有明显相关性（p=0．022，p=0．014，p=0．028），但与总体预后无相关性（p=0．064，p=0．143，p=0．581）。NOS2阳性表达常预示较高的局部复发率（p=0．038）。NOS1、NOS2阳性表达预示较低的生存率（p=0．007，p〈0．001）。通过多变量分析处理，NOS2的表达被证实可作为局部复发率的独立预后判断因素；NOS1、NOS2的表达作为因变量，它们单独或复合阳性表达常与较低的总生存率有关（p=0．046，p=0．004）[危险率，3．17（95％置信区间，1．0-9．8）和5．58（95％置信区间，1．7-18．0）]。

Applying the electroforming process to bio-inspired architecture： The case of Castelbuono Estate Winery

Inaugurated in June 2012, the Carapace at Castelbuono Estate Winery in Italy is a highly interesting example of biomorphic architecture. The structure, an artistic creation of world-renowned sculptor Arnatdo Pomodoro, is reminiscent of a tortoise shell that conveys a sense of protection： the Carapace structure guards wine barriques in the same way that the tortoise carapace protects the animal. Zoomorphic aspects are further exhibited by symbots on the roof, which remind observers of cuttlefish bone, a recurring element in the artistic production of Maestro Pomodoro. The roof was constructed by assembly of single copper plates with a rough surface in accordance with the design of the artist. Therefore, determining the appropriate production process was crucial. Etectroforming was selected as the method to achieve a challenging architectural goal.

Arterial stiffness and wave reflections are widely used in observational studies to analyse the determinants of haemodynamic changes observed in various clinical conditions and to understand the pathogenesis of their cardiovascular complications. A large number of publications and several reviews documented the changes in arterial stiffness and wave reflections after various interventions, either non-pharmacological or pharmacological.

Metabolic syndrome and prostate abnormalities in male subjects of infertile couples

No previous study has evaluated systematically the relationship between metabolic syndrome （MetS） and prostate-related symptoms and signs in young infertile men. We studied 171 （36.5 ±8.3-years-old） males of infertile couples. MetS was defined based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Third Adult Treatment Panel. All men underwent hormonal （including total testosterone （TT） and insulin）, seminal （including interleukin-8 （IL-8）, seminal plasma IL-8 （sIL-8））, scrotal and transrectal ultrasound evaluations. Because we have previously assessed correlations between MetS and scrotal parameters in a larger cohort of infertile men, here, we focused on transrectal features. Prostate-related symptoms were assessed using the National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index （NIH-CPSI） and the International Prostate Symptom Score （IPSS）. Twenty-two subjects fulfilled MetS criteria. In an age-adjusted logistic ordinal model, insulin levels increased as a function of MetS components （Wald = 29.5, P〈 0.0001） and showed an inverse correlation with TT （adjusted r = -0.359, P 〈 0.0001）. No association between MetS and NIH-CPSI or IPSS scores was observed. In an age-, TT-, insulin-adjusted logistic ordinal model, an increase in number of MetS components correlated negatively with normal sperm morphology （Wald -- 5.59, P〈 0.02） and positively with slL-8 levels （Wald = 4.32, P〈 0.05）, which is a marker of prostate inflammation, with prostate total and transitional zone volume assessed using ultrasound （Wald = 17.6 and 12.5, both P〈 0.0001）, with arterial peak systolic velocity （Wald = 9.57, P= 0.002）, with texture nonhomogeneity （hazard ratio （HR） = 1.87 （1.05-3.33）, P 〈 0.05）, with calcification size （Wald = 3.11, P 〈 0.05）, but not with parameters of seminal vesicle size or function. Homocysteinemia and Depression in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: The Cohort Longitudinal Study “InveCeAb” (Brain Aging in Abbiategrasso)

Depression is a major health problem, especially for elderly people. According to the “homocysteine hypothesis of depression”, high homocysteine levels may cause depression of mood via cerebrovascular diseases. Whilst biologically plausible, such hypothesis needs yet confirmation. We aimed at: 1) studying the relationships between homocysteinemia (HCY) and depression in a community-dwelling cohort of people aged 70 to 75 years at baseline;2) investigating plasma levels of HCY and 3) comparing these levels between males and females, in the same population. We exploited the data from four waves (2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018) of the longitudinal study “InveCeAb”, with specific regard towards mood assessment, by Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) scoring, and diagnosis of clinically relevant or subthreshold depression. HCY plasma levels were measured in the waves 2012, 2014 and 2018. Sample attrition was due mainly to death or overall worsening. No statistically significant differences were found in plasma homocysteine levels in each wave, according to depressive symptoms. No correlations were found between plasma HCY levels in each wave with their corresponding GDS scores, even after adjustment for folate and cobalamin blood concentrations. Dichotomized levels of HCY (≤15 vs >15 μM/l) were not associated with dichotomized GDS scores (≤4 vs higher), clinically relevant and subthreshold depression diagnosis and any antidepressive use, in any wave. First (2012) HCY levels increased with participants’ increasing age, cross-sectionally. Listwise HCY concentrations decreased along the 3 waves. HCY levels were always higher in males than in females. Our results may challenge the “homocysteine hypothesis” of depression, whilst supporting the role of high homocysteinemia as a marker of overall bad health.

The Remote Testing in Abbiategrasso (RTA) Study Protocol: A Counter-Balanced Crossover Trial to Assess the Feasibility of Direct-to-Home-Neuropsychology with Older People

Background: The Sars-Cov-2 pandemic has accelerated the spreading of telemedicine, including TeleNeuroPsychology (TNP). Also in a non-pandemic scenario, TNP gives the advantage of reaching older subjects, which often have mobility or transportation limitations. Previous studies on the feasibility, acceptability and reliability of TNP provide promising indications. However, it remains unclear how elderly populations in Italy welcome this practice, in particular when carried out “direct-to-home” (DTH neuropsychology—DTH-NP), hence without assistance in setting up, i.e., the videoconference, and which tests validated in Italian populations show good comparability between remote (either by voice phone call or videoconference) and face-to-face administration. Aims: Here we present a study protocol aimed at assessing: 1) the recruitment rate in a study on DTH neuropsychological assessment through voice calls or videoconference, 2) the feasibility and acceptability of a DTH neuropsychological assessment, 3) the comparability between DTH and face-to-face neuropsychological assessments. Methods: Fifty-eight older adults (65 - 85 years) were recruited among donors of the Abbiategrasso Brain Bank and will undergo both a face-to-face and a DTH neuropsychological assessment in a counterbalanced cross-over design (Group 1: remote session first;Group 2: face-to-face session first). Recruitment rate will be first evaluated. Then, the responses to an acceptability questionnaire will be compared between the two administration modalities. Finally, the DTH-face-to-face comparability will be evaluated as good reliability of a DTH neuropsychological assessment and agreement between scores obtained in the two modalities. Discussion and Conclusion: This study protocol aims at describing the procedures allowing a more reliable implementation of DTH-NP in the Italian clinical and research contexts.
