Apennine–Pyrenees disjunct distribution: an unusual biogeographic pattern revealed in fea beetles of the Longitarsus candidulus species-group (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae)

European mountain systems have played a crucial role in shaping the distribution of species and of their genetic diversity during the Quaternary climatic changes,with the establishment of allopatric patterns across main mountain *** we investigated the evolutionary history of fea beetles of the Longitarsus candidulus species-group showing an uncommon disjunct biogeographic pattern across the Apennine and the *** applied a multilocus molecular approach and multispecies coalescent models to establish a phylogenetic and systematic framework for this morphologically homogeneous species-group and to estimate the time of main cladogenetic events underlying the origin of the Apennine-Pyrenees *** found strong support for the monophyly of the candidulus group with a sister relationship between Longitarsus laureolae and *** endemic to the Apennine and the Pyrenees mountains *** timing of speciation events in the candidulus species-group coincides with 2 major climatic transitions during the Early and Middle Pleistocene which resulted in signifcant environmental changes in Europe and suggest a scenario of allopatric isolation and divergence on distinct mountain *** split between the thermophilic species *** and the ancestor of the temperate species *** and *** is estimated at~3 Ma during the transition from Pliocene to Pleistocene and was probably triggered by their segregation in xerophilous and temperate *** speciation between *** and ***,estimated at~1 Ma during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition,can be explained by the establishment of unfavorable conditions in West Alps and Central Massif underlying the onset of the Apennine-Pyrenees disjunct ***,the strict association between members of the candidulus group and distinct Thymelaeaceae plants suggests further studies to address the hypothesis that speciation in these fea beetles might have been also associated with

An enhanced text categorization method based on improved text frequency approach and mutual information algorithm

Text categorization plays an important role in data mining. Feature selection is the most important process of text categorization. Focused on feature selection, we present an improved text frequency method for filtering of low frequency features to deal with the data preprocessing, propose an improved mutual information algorithm for feature selection, and develop an improved *** method for characteristic weights evaluation. The proposed method is applied to the benchmark test set Reuters-21578 Top10 to examine its effectiveness. Numerical results show that the precision, the recall and the value of F1 of the proposed method are all superior to those of existing conventional methods.

Nonlinear versus linearised model on stand density model fitting and stand density index calculation: analysis of coefficients estimation via simulation

The stand density index,one of the most important metrics for managing site occupancy,is generally calculated from empirical data by means of a coefficient derived from the“self-thinning rule”or stand density model.I undertook an exploratory analysis of model fitting based on simulated data.I discuss the use of the logarithmic transformation(i.e.,linearisation)of the relationship between the total number of trees per hectare(N)and the quadratic mean diameter of the stand(QMD).I compare the classic method used by Reineke(J Agric Res 46:627–638,1933),i.e.,linear OLS model fitting after logarithmic transformation of data,with the“pure”powerlaw model,which represents the native mathematical structure of this relationship.I evaluated the results according to the correlation between N and *** OLS and nonlinear fitting agreed in the estimation of coefficients only for highly correlated(between-1 and-0.85)or poorly correlated([-0.39)*** average correlation values(i.e.,between-0.75 and-0.4),it is probable that for practical applications,the differences were relevant,especially concerning the key coefficient for Reineke’s stand density index *** introduced a non-negligible bias in SDI *** linearised log–log model always estimated a lower slope term than did the exponent of the nonlinear function except at the extremes of the correlation *** the logarithmic transformation is mathematically correct and always equivalent to a nonlinear model in case of prediction of the dependent variable,the difference detected in my studies between the two methods(i.e.,coefficient estimation)was directly related to the correlation between N and QMD in each simulated/disturbed *** general,given the power law as the“natural”structure of the N versus QMD relationship,the nonlinear model is preferred,with a logarithmic transformation used only in the case of violation of parametric assumptions(*** distributed non-normally).

An ant colony optimization method for generalized TSP problem

The heat-pump market in Italy:an in-depth economic study about the reasons for a still unexpressed potential

In this paper,the Italian heat-pump(HP)market is presented,with an overview over the past 10 *** order to highlight market potential and barriers,a comparison is proposed between the economic performances of two different heating and domestic hot-water systems,air-to-water HPs and condensing boilers,based on several factors,such as energy costs,thermal loads,climatic conditions,HP-performance classes and some economic indicators such as the payback time and the interest *** results are presented in a parametric form,which may be profitably used for a comparative analysis with other European *** first part of the paper deals with the analysis of the current Italian HP market,to show its still unexpressed *** second part analyses the HP economic convenience with respect to the most commonly used heating technology,*** gas boiler,under conditions typical of the Italian *** comparison is carried out in terms of two economic indicators:additional acceptable cost and net present *** main results show that HP technology is economically competitive in most Italian climatic zones,with a strong dependence on the HP-performance *** particular,if the best-performing class was adopted,economic gains would be guaranteed over the gas boiler,even with significant variations in the main influencing ***,the economic issue does not seem to be a limiting factor for HP technology diffusion,at least if the current incentives are ***,some other barriers should be removed,such as the supply chain,the training of installation personnel and the final-user awareness.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 agonists are potentially useful drugs for treating metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease

In this editorial,we comment on Yin et al’s recently published Letter to the *** particular,we focus on the potential use of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists(GLP-1RAs)alone,but even more so in combination therapy,as one of the most promising therapies in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease(MASLD),the new definition of an old condition,non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,which aims to better define the spectrum of steatotic *** is well known that GLP-1RAs,having shown outstanding performance in fat loss,weight loss,and improvement of insulin resistance,could play a role in protecting the liver from progressive *** clinical trials have shown that,among GLP-1RAs,semaglutide is a safe,well-studied therapeutic choice for MASLD patients;however,most studies demonstrate that,while semaglutide can reduce steatosis,including steatohepatitis histological signs(in terms of inflammatory cell infiltration and hepatocyte ballooning),it does not improve *** of therapies with different but complementary mechanisms of action are considered the best way to improve efficiency and slow disease progression due to the complex pathophysiology of the *** particular,GLP-1RAs associated with antifibrotic drug therapy,dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide(GIP)/GLP-1RA or GLP-1 and glucagon RAs have promoted greater improvement in hepatic steatosis,liver biochemistry,and non-invasive fibrosis tests than ***,although to date there are no definitive indications from international drug agencies,there is the hope that soon the therapeutic lines in the most advanced phase of study will be able to provide a therapy for MASLD,one that will certainly include the use of GLP-1RAs as combination therapy.
