A mathematical model is developed based on a simplified mechanism of anaerobic digestion. The main objective is to quantitatively analyze the digestion process to optimize operating conditions and maintenance of this equipment, which could be used to test different materials and be able to apply these results to the possible scaling to bio-digesters installed in the field. The experiments were carried out in a hybrid system bio-digester photovoltaic cells. The bio-digester is made of stainless steel with dimensions to treat an average of 10 kg of raw material and produce biogas from different organic materials. The reactor has been conditioned with temperature sensors, pressure and methane gas that allow monitoring the concentration of the gas and the conditions of operation during the time of digestion. The system has a photovoltaic array to provide the energy required to keep the temperature constant, The experiment was conducted using materials such as goat manure mixed with household waste, and various formulations of these materials were prepared. The experimental results were used to test the mathematical model.

BACKGROUND This study evaluates the American Thyroid Association(ATA)ultrasound(US)classification system for the initial assessment of thyroid nodules to determine if it indeed facilitates clinical *** To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the diagnostic value of the ATA US classification system for the initial assessment of thyroid *** In accordance with the PRISMA statement for diagnostic test accuracy,we selected articles that evaluated the 2015 ATA US pattern guidelines using a diagnostic gold *** analyzed these cases using traditional diagnostic parameters,as well as the threshold approach to clinical decision-making and decision curve *** We reviewed 13 articles with 8445 thyroid nodules,which were classified according to 2015 ATA *** these,46.62%were *** cancer was found in any of the ATA benign pattern *** Bayesian analysis post-test probability for cancer in each classification was:(1)Very-low suspicion,0.85%;(2)Low,2.6%;(3)Intermediate,6.7%;and(4)High,40.9%.The net benefit(NB),expressed as avoided interventions,indicated that the highest capacity to avoid unnecessary fine needle aspiration biopsy(FNAB)in the patterns that we studied was 42,31,35,and 43 of every 100 *** NB calculation for a probability threshold of 11%for each of the ATA suspicion patterns studied is less than that of performing FNAB on all *** These three types of analysis have shown that only the ATA high-suspicion diagnostic pattern is clinically useful,in which case,FNAB should be ***,the curve decision analysis has demonstrated that using the ATA US risk patterns to decide which patients need FNAB does not provide a greater benefit than performing FNAB on all thyroid ***,it is likely that a better way to approach the assessment of thyroid nodules would be to perform FNAB on all non-cystic nodules,as the present analysis has shown the ATA risk patterns

Metals obtain optimum conditions of metallurgical and physical properties through a heat treatment. Brass is one of the copper alloys which has many applications in everyday life and in the industry. In this work, the influence of the precipitation heat treatment temperature on the metallurgical microstructure, structure, thermal properties, and microhardness of an alpha brass is analyzed. Samples were heat treated by precipitation for 2 h at 300°C, 400°C, 500°C, 600°C, and 700°C. The best mechanical properties were found at 500°C of precipitation heat treatment temperature. Specimens were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Vickers microhardness, photothermal radiometry, and photoacoustic to study the thermal diffusivity and conductivity, as well as the heat capacity. The inverse of the full width at the half maximum analysis showed that the crystallinity decreased as the precipitation heat treatment temperature increased. Metallurgical microstructure and microhardness were correlated to the precipitation heat treatment temperatures to determine the effect on the metallurgical and mechanical properties, as well as the effect on the thermal properties of alpha brass.

Cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Diaphragm injury is observed in patients with COPD. However, the potential role of smoking in triggering or perpetuating muscle injury is unknown. The present study was aimed at evaluating the potential role of commercial tobacco smoke as a direct cause of skeletal muscle injury in experimental conditions. Seventy Wistar rats (170 - 250 g) were assigned to smoking (n = 49) or non-smoking (n = 21) groups. The smoking groups were submitted to a single or multiple (i.e., five or thirty) daily sessions of cigarette smoking in an inhalatory chamber (time length: 2 h each session). The level of exposure was constant and assessed by CO concentrations (50 ppm) and serum cotinine analysis. Animals submitted to a single smoke exposure and the corresponding controls were euthanized in groups at 0 h, 2 h, 4 h, 24 h or 48 h after completing the exposure. Animals submitted to multiple exposures were euthanized at 0 h after smoking. Samples from vastus lateralis muscle were obtained and processed for assessing cell injury and selected protein expression. Monoclonal anti-albumin antibodies were used to identify muscle fibers with sarcolemmal (membrane) injury. Subcellular muscle injury was assessed using transmission electron microscopy (EM). MyoD, myogenin and α-tubulin were immunodetected using western blot techniques. Exposure to cigarette smoke associated with significant membrane damage (mean relative difference (MRD) with controls: +181%, p = 0.004) and sarcomere disruptions (MRD: +226%, p = 0.001). Expression of MyoD and myogenin (normalized to α-tubulin) were significantly increased at 4 h and remained increased at 48 h post-exposure. We conclude that not only a single but also consecutive exposure to tobacco smoke have acute deleterious effects on peripheral muscle structure. Four immobility responses (IR): elicited by clamping, bandaging, grasping and inversion, and their modification by potassium and spironolactone was studied in old Wistar rats (body weight, 500 g). When undrugged, only clamping and grasping, but not bandaging and inversion induced an IR in rats. Potassium and spironolactone significantly enhanced the duration of IR induced by clamping but not by grasping. They also induced an immobility response by bandaging, but not by inversion. The data suggest that IR induced by clamping and bandaging are somehow related to changes in the potassium serum levels. Consequently, such a relationship may be a suitable model to study some forms of paralysis in human beings which are related to changes in the potassium serum levels.
