Buzz-pollination in Neotropical bees:genus-dependent frequencies and lack of optimal frequency for pollen release

Over 50 genera of bees release pollen from flower anthers using thoracic vibrations,a phenomenon known as *** efficiency of this process is directly affected by the mechanical properties of the buzzes,namely the duration,amplitude,and ***,although the effects of the former two properties are well described,the role of buzz frequency on pollen release remains ***,nearly all of the existing studies describing vibrational properties of natural buzz-pollination are limited to bumblebees(Bombus)and carpenter bees(Xvlocopa)constraining our current understanding of this behavior and its ***,we attempted to minimize this shortcoming by testing whether flower anthers exhibit optimal frequency for pollen release and whether bees tune their buzzes to match these(optimal)*** true,certain frequencies will trigger more pollen release and lighter bees will reach buzz frequencies closer to this optimum to compensate their smaller buzz *** strategies were used to test these hypotheses:(i)the use of(artificial)vibrational playbacks in a broad range of buzz frequencies and amplitudes to assess pollen release by tomato plants(Solarium Ivcopersicum L.)and(ii)the recording of natural buzzes of Neotropical bees visiting tomato plants during *** playback experiment indicates that although buzz frequency does affect pollen release,no optimal frequency exists for *** addition,the recorded results of natural buzz-pollination reveal that buzz frequencies vary with bee genera and are not correlated with body ***,neither bees nor plants are tuned to optimal pollen release *** frequency of buzz-pollination is a likely consequence of the insect flight machinery adapted to reach higher accelerations,while flower plant response to buzz-pollination is the likely result of its pollen granular properties.

BACKGROUND Infection by the hepatitis C virus(HCV) is currently considered to be a global health issue, with a high worldwide prevalence and causing chronic disease in afflicted individuals. The disease largely involves the liver but it can affect other organs, including the skin. While leukocytoclastic vasculitis has been reported as one of the dermatologic manifestations of HCV infection, there are no reports of this condition as the first symptom of HCV recurrence after liver *** SUMMARY We report here a case of leukocytoclastic vasculitis in a liver transplant recipient on maintenance immunosuppression. The condition presented as a palpable purpura in both lower extremities. Blood and urine cultures were negative and all biochemical tests were normal, excepting evidence of anemia and hypocomplementemia. Imaging examination by computed tomography showed a small volume of ascites, diffuse thickening of bowel walls, and a small bilateral pleural effusion. Skin biopsy showed leukocytoclasia and fibrinoid *** biopsy was suggestive of HCV recurrence in the graft, and HCV polymerase chain reaction yielded 11460 copies/mL and identified the genotype as 1 A. Treatment of the virus with a 12-wk direct-acting antiviral regimen of ribavirin, sofosbuvir and daclatasvir led to regression of the symptoms within the first 10 d and subsequent complete resolution of the *** This case highlights the difficulties of diagnosing skin lesions caused by HCVinfection in immunosuppressed patients.

Assessment of the Total Organic Carbon and Conductivity in Consecutive Dyeings with Reactive Dyestuffs Using Treated Effluent by UV/H202 Photocatalysis

The paper was monitored the conductivity （g.L＂l of NaCI）, the absorbances values （Abs） and the amount of TOC （total organic carbon）, before and after five consecutive dyeings made with reuse water, obtained from treated effluent by UV/H202 photocatalysis. All rates of decolorization were above 92%, the removal of total organic carbon was above 89% in all treatments and the economy of NaCI was from 3.10 in the first recipe, 3.17 in the second, 3.49 in the third, 3.79 in the fourth and 4.05 in the fifth recipe. The five dyeings compared with same dyeings made with deionized water presented a color deviation （AE＊） below 1. The conventional dyeings would consume 80 L/kg against 40 L/kg used in the dyeing process proposed in this study, representing a great economy of water, with no discharge of effluents.

The search for cancer biomarkers is frequently based on comparisons between tumors and adjacent-to-tumor samples. However, even after histological confirmation of been free of cancer cells, these adjacent-to-tumor samples might harbor molecular alterations which are not sufficient to cause them to look like cancer, but can differentiate these cells from normal cells. When comparing them, potential biomarkers are missed, and mainly the opportunity of finding initial aberrations presents in both tumors and adjacent samples, but not in true normal samples from non-cancer patients, resulting in misinterpretations about the carcinogenic process. Nevertheless, collecting adjacent-to-tumor samples brings trumps to be explored. The addition of samples from non-cancer patients opens an opportunity to increase the finds of the molecular cascade of events in the carcinogenic process. Differences between normal samples and adjacent samples might represent the first steps of the carcinogenic process. Adding samples of non-cancer patients to the analysis of molecular alterations relevant to the carcinogenic process opens a new window of opporttmides to the discovery of cancer biomarkers and molecular targets.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the visible loss of sugar cane and the damage to the knuckles, using the John deere 3520 harvester on three different travel speeds (3.0;4.0 and 5.0 km·h-1), in DIC with five repetitions in campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. Each treatment was composed by six lines of harvested cane stumps, with a length of 290 m each. In these six lines, the remains of sugar cane left in the field were collected by placing the sampling frame in two central lines every 50 m, and separating 40 m of edge. The sampling area was surrounded by 2 m wide and 10 m long, totaling 20 m2. To calculate the damage to stumps, a visual methodology by [1], was used, which classifies the damage grade, ranging from 1 to 4. Fifty stumps were assessed randomly for each speed, in a sampling area of 1800 m2. The data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey test at 5%, in order to compare the effect of different speeds on the losses and damages. There was no significant difference regarding the loss or damage by comparing the different speeds. Therefore, it is more advantageous to use the speed of 5.0 km·h-1, harvesting more in less time and causing the same level of damage.

Main Steps for Radiopharmaceuticals Hot Cells Validation in Accordance with GMP Requirements：Methodology and Practical Guide

The worldwide GMP （Good Manufacturing Practices） guidelines issued for injectable pharmaceuticals globally agree thatthe vials filling operation must be performed under air cleanliness Grade A. The air cleanliness classifications adopted by the WHO（World Health Organization） define the particle diameter size, the sampling occupancy state and the limit concentration of viableparticles. To reach conformity regarding the microbial limits foreseen at the GMP guidelines, a microbiological monitoring programmust be stablished for selected sampling points such as active air sampling, passive air sampling （settle plate method）, surfacessampling （contact method）, personnel sampling （gloves and clothes）, compressed gas, materials and equipment that may interfere andcompromise the product microbiological quality. The key elements for a GMP certification are directly related to a qualification andvalidation program for radiopharmaceutical manufacturers that must be clearly defined and documented by a validation master plan,foreseen by the manufactures Quality Assurance office. This study describes each qualification step and test for DQ （designQualification）, IQ （Installation Qualification）, OQ （Operation Qualification） and PQ （Performance Qualification） that must be carriedout and carefully planned when it comes to hot cells and isolator systems in accordance with the GMP requirements foreseen byinternational regulatory and supervisory bodies.

Droughts in the Amazon: Identification, Characterization and Dynamical Mechanisms Associated

In this study, we used the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) to identify and to characterize the dry extreme events in the Amazon region. The results showed that the drought of 1998 was the most intense (SPI average equal to -1.69) in the period from 1979 to 2014. However, some papers have characterized the years 2005 and 2010 as the two largest droughts of the century. Thus, it was also carried out a comparative study of these droughts. The results showed that the drought 1998 was more intensive and extreme than the droughts of 2005 and 2010, although droughts of 2005 and 2010 lasted longer than 1998 due to oceanic and atmospheric conditions with influencing to cause greater social and economic impacts. Furthermore, it is suggested that the impact of the 2005 and 2010 droughts is a response from the dry occurred in 1993-1994 and 1997-1998.

Aim: To evaluate data related to mental work functioning of workers with cancer diagnosis in radiotherapy in a private service in the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Method: It consists in a cross-sectional, observational and analytical study with comparison between cancer patients and healthy people, using the Brazilian version of the Work Role Functioning Questionnaire (WRFQ-Br). descriptive and statistical analysis is performed by the Mann-Whitney test. Results: There was a significant difference between the groups in the evaluation of mental demand;however, the population diagnosed with malignant neoplasm submitted to radiotherapy had unexpected higher scores, reflecting lower mental exigency. Conclusions: The observed context may occur due to extensive support of family, government and interdisciplinary team of health care for individuals diagnosed with cancer. This data provide support for new research studies related to the importance of the work to promote mental health, considering aspects related to social interaction and productivity as the support system members. The importance of disseminating these results and limitation is based in the necessity of investments to improve research and actions to promote the permanence and early return to work for cancer survivors in Brazil and Latin America.

Aims We aimed at disentangling the effects of spatial distance,current and past environmental dissimilarity,and their combinations on tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover by addressing the following questions:(i)Is tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover related to the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity?(ii)Does tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover respond to paleoclimate(Last Glacial Maximum and Mid-Holocene)?Methods The study was carried out in 14 Atlantic rainforest sites in Brazil(20.4 ha sampled)containing 615 tree species from 83 plant *** obtained plot-level geographic coordinates and soil variables and site-level bioclimatic variables in the current,Mid-Holocene and Last Glacial *** used structural equation models with a distance-based approach to(i)test the direct effects of spatial distance and environmental dissimilarity and(ii)test the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic(Bray–Curtis distance)and phylogenetic turnover(Comdist and Comdistnt distances).Important Findings Our results suggest a weak indirect effect of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic and phylogenetic *** community turnover was driven by the direct effects of neutral,niche-based and historical ***,we inferred that the paleoclimate(historical processes)promoted the selection of the clades that gave rise to the current flora,while spatial distances(neutral processes)limited the dispersal range of species from the regional pool and environmental conditions(niche-based processes)locally selected the taxa that are able to persist.
