Diet composition and its ecological drivers are rarely investigated in coexisting closely related species.We used a molecular approach to characterize the seasonal variation in diet composition in four spiny lizard species inhabiting a mountainous ecosystem.DNA metabarcoding revealed that the lizards sceloporus aeneus,s.bicanthalis,s.grammicus,and s.spinosus mostly consumed arthropods of the orders Hemiptera,Araneae,Hymenoptera,and Coleoptera.The terrestrial lizards s.aeneus and s.bicanthalis mostly predated ants and spiders,whereas the arboreal–saxicolous s.grammicus and saxicolous s.spinosus largely consumed grasshoppers and leafhoppers.The taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of the prey was higher during the dry season than the rainy season,likely because reduced prey availability in the dry season forced lizards to diversify their diets to meet their nutritional demands.Dietary and phylogenetic composition varied seasonally depending on the species,but only dietary composition varied with altitude.seasonal dietary turnover was greater in s.spinosus than in s.bicanthalis,suggesting site-specific seasonal variability in prey availability;no other differences among species were observed.s.bicanthalis,which lives at the highest altitude in our study site,displayed interseasonal variation in diet breadth.Dietary differences were correlated with the species’feeding strategies and elevational distribution,which likely contributed to the coexistence of these lizard species in the studied geographic area and beyond.

Characterizing natural fractures has a decisive effect on production forecasts in fractured oil and gas reservoirs.Discrete Fracture Networks(DFN)constitutes the main modeling framework for fractured geosystems.However,myriads of uncertainties are enclosed prior modeling representative stochastic or deterministic DFN ensembles.This paper presents a novel methodology for DFN calibration and an efficacious field application,which incorporatesWell-testing interpretation,Embedded Discrete Fracture Model(EDFM)framework,and numerical reservoir simulation.The proposed workflow starts with the DFN generation from seismic data,imaging logging data and core data.After multiple DFNs are modeled,well-test analysis is employed to calibrate the intrinsic properties of fractures at different locations.Then,these fracture networks are characterized dynamically by EDFM,which promotes capturing the optimal fracture model quickly screened.Finally,pressure and production history match are reached for the DFN realization that honors the optimal fracture model.

Objective:To describe the microbiological characteristics in emphysematous pyelonephritis(EPN),demonstrate the frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase(EsBL)microorganisms,and determine if these microorganisms are associated with the prognosis of patients with EPN.Methods:We conducted a retrospective study in patients with a diagnosis of EPN in a tertiary care hospital of the northeast region of Mexico during the period from January 2011 to January 2016.Clinical variables were analyzed to determine association with the presence of EsBL-producing microorganisms.statistical significance was set with psults:A total of 63 patients were included;55(87.3%)of them were females,with a median age of 55(interquartile range:45-65)years.Conservative management was indicated in 38.1%;42.9%were treated with ureteral stent;12.7%with open or percutaneous drainage;15.8%with early nephrectomy;and 9.5%with delayed nephrectomy.Reported mortality was 13(20.6%)cases;23(36.5%)cases required admission to the intensive care unit.The most frequent microorganism isolated was Escherichia coli(n=34,53.9%).EsBL microorganisms were found in 31.7%of the population.No significant association of EsBL was found with admission to the intensive care unit,or with increased mortality.Conclusions:To our knowledge,this is the first study that evaluates EsBL microorganisms as a prognostic factor in EPN.Risk factors associated with a poor prognosis in patients with EPN have been described.The microbiological factors,specifically EsBL-producing bacteria,do not seem to influence in the prognosis of these patients.

Various methods and specialized software programs are available for processing two- dimensional gel electrophoresis （2-DGE） images. However, due to the anomalies present in these images, a reliable, automated, and highly reproducible system for 2-DGE image analysis has still not been achieved. The most common anomalies found in 2-DGE images include vertical and hor- izontal streaking, fuzzy spots, and background noise, which greatly complicate computational anal- ysis. In this paper, we review the preprocessing techniques applied to 2-DGE images for noise reduction, intensity normalization, and background correction. We also present a quantitative comparison of non-linear filtering techniques applied to synthetic gel images, through analyzing the performance of the filters under specific conditions. synthetic proteins were modeled into a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution with adjustable parameters for changing the size, intensity, and degradation. Three types of noise were added to the images： Gaussian, Rayleigh, and exponen- tial, with signal-to-noise ratios （sNRs） ranging 8-20 decibels （dB）. We compared the performanceof wavelet, contourlet, total variation （TV）, and wavelet-total variation （WTTV） techniques using parameters sNR and spot efficiency. In terms of spot efficiency, contourlet and TV were more sen- sitive to noise than wavelet and WTTV. Wavelet worked the best for images with sNR ranging 10- 20 dB, whereas WTTV performed better with high noise levels. Wavelet also presented the best per- formance with any level of Gaussian noise and low levels （20-14 dB） of Rayleigh and exponential noise in terms of sNR. Finally, the performance of the non-linear filtering techniques was evaluated using a real 2-DGE image with previously identified proteins marked. Wavelet achieved the best detection rate for the real image.

Over the past thirty years, since the advent of the Web, the potential use of virtual environments for teaching-learning processes has undergone an exponential increase, leading us quickly from the use of web pages to social networks, and from these to virtual immersive environments such as second Life among others. Those kind of 3D platforms (Immersive Virtual Environments) or metaverses are representations of real or imaginative worlds created on the digital world with the purpose of allowing users to live impossible situations and experiences without the limitations of the real world. Users on these worlds are represented by avatars that interact in representation of users. These virtual worlds are used for business processes, research and education. In relation to the teaching and learning processes, metverses are widely used for research and application of educational processes, especially in the area of languages learning. The purpose of this paper is to describe the process of using the experimental 3D LIMEM method, specifically the learning path branch, for adapting an immersive virtual environment to be used as a virtual teaching-learning tool of English as a second language.

Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBDs),such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease,are chronic pathologies associated with a deregulated immune response in the intestinal mucosa,and they are triggered by environmental factors in genetically susceptible individuals.Exogenous glucocorticoids(GCs)are widely used as anti-inflammatory therapy in IBDs.In the past,patients with moderate or severe states of inflammation received GCs as a first line therapy with an important effectiveness in terms of reduction of the disease activity and the induction of remission.However,this treatment often results in detrimental side effects.This downside drove the development of second generation GCs and more precise(non-systemic)drugdelivery methods.Recent clinical trials show that most of these new treatments have similar effectiveness to first generation GCs with fewer adverse effects.The remaining challenge in successful treatment of IBDs concerns the refractoriness and dependency that some patients encounter during GCs treatment.A deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying GC response is key to personalizing drug choice for IBDs patients to optimize their response to treatment.In this review,we examine the clinical characteristics of treatment with GCs,followed by an in depth analysis of the proposed molecular mechanisms involved in its resistance and dependence associated with IBDs.This thorough analysis of current clinical and biomedical literature may help guide physicians in determining a course of treatment for IBDs patients and identifies important areas needing further study.

The risk-sensitive filtering design problem with respect to the exponential mean-square cost criterion is con-sidered for stochastic Gaussian systems with polynomial of second and third degree drift terms and intensity parameters multiplying diffusion terms in the state and observations equations. The closed-form optimal fil-tering equations are obtained using quadratic value functions as solutions to the corresponding Focker- Plank-Kolmogorov equation. The performance of the obtained risk-sensitive filtering equations for stochastic polynomial systems of second and third degree is verified in a numerical example against the optimal po-lynomial filtering equations (and extended Kalman-Bucy for system polynomial of second degree), through comparing the exponential mean-square cost criterion values. The simulation results reveal strong advan-tages in favor of the designed risk-sensitive equations for some values of the intensity parameters.

This article is about the methods and techniques used in the building "retrofit" in modernist style designed by the architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy in the fifties, and also about the project of the new Rio de Janeiro MIs (Museum of Image and sound), under construction, by The North-American office Diller scofidio + Renfro, both located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. These constructions present a wide view of the concept of sustainability, not commonly used in public buildings in Brazil. In the building designed by Reidy, which belongs to the state of Rio de Janeiro, the regeneration to host the new headquarters of the state Department of Taxation and Finance respected its original characteristics and used smart and sustainable design techniques, as well as recyclable materials. On the other hand, the project of the new museum at Copacabana Beach was entirely planned on sustainable bases and it includes the application of building techniques concerning that purpose. This article presents a study of these two cases and evaluates the techniques and materials used in one another. Observing the principles of sustainability in construction is a pioneering initiative of the state Government. This article aims at making the scientific community aware of the needs of immediate adoption of sustainability techniques in Civil Engineering, not only in the construction of new buildings, but also in the regeneration of the existing ones, as well as the need of imperious adoption of sustainable techniques when it comes to maintainability.
