On/Off-Line Prediction Applied to Job Scheduling on Non-Dedicated NOWs

This paper proposes a prediction engine designed for non-dedicated clusters, which is able to estimate the turnaround time for parallel applications, even in the presence of serial workload of the workstation owner. The prediction engine can be configured to work with three different estimation kernels： a Historical kernel, a Simulation kernel based on analytical models and an integration of both, named Hybrid kernel. These estimation proposals were integrated into a scheduling system, named CISNE, which can be executed in an on-line or off-line mode. The accuracy of the proposed estimation methods was evaluated in relation to different job scheduling policies in a real and a simulated cluster environment. In both environments, we observed that the Hybrid system gives the best results because it combines the ability of a simulation engine to capture the dynamism of a non-dedicated environment together with the accuracy of the historical methods to estimate the application runtime considering the state of the resources.

The growing installation of natural gas fired power plants has increased the integration of natural gas and electricity sectors. This has driven the need investigate the interactions among them and to optimize energy resources management from a centralized planning perspective. Thus, a combined modeling of the reservoirs involved in electric power and gas systems and their locations on both networks are essential features to be considered in the operational planning of energy *** paper presents a modeling and optimization approach to the operational planning of electric power and natural gas systems, taking into account different energy storage facilities, such as water reservoirs, natural gas storages and line packs of pipelines. The proposed model takes advantage of captures both energy systems synergy and their associated networks. This approach identifies the interactions between the energy storage facilities and their economic impact over their optimal scheduling. The results show the benefits of an integrated operational planning of electric power and natural gas systems, the close interdependency between the energy resources stored in both systems, and the effects of a combined scheduling.

Colorectal cancer(CrC) is a major cause of mortality worldwide, associated with a steadily growing prevalence. Notably, the identification of KrAS, NrAS, and BrAF mutations has markedly improved targeted CrC therapy by affording treatments directed against the epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFr) and other anti-angiogenic therapies. However, the survival benefit conferred by these therapies remains variable and difficult to predict, owing to the high level of molecular heterogeneity among patients with CrC. Although classification into consensus molecular subtypes could optimize response prediction to targeted therapies, the acquisition of resistance mutations to targeted therapy is, in part, responsible for the lack of response in some patients. However, the acquisition of such mutations can induce challenges in clinical practice. The utility of liquid biopsy to detect resistance mutations against anti-EGFr therapy has recently been described. This approach may constitute a new standard in the decision algorithm for targeted CrC therapy.

Modeling height growth for teak plantations in Colombia using the reducible stochastic differential equation approach

Teak(Tectona grandis L.f.)plantations are increasingly being established in tropical regions to meet a rising demand for its highly valued *** plantations have been established in the Atlantic Coastal Plain region of Colombia,a region climatically suitable for teak growth by having a monsoon climate with a unimodal precipitation *** diameter at breast height(DBH,1.3 m above ground)and mean top height,periodically measured over a 17-year period in 44 permanent sampling plots of size 0.06 and 0.10 ha,were used in this study.A stochastic differential equation(SDE),along with a Bertalanffy–richards-type height growth model,was used to model and estimate top height growth of teak plantations in *** noise and height measurement errors were explicitly considered as the main uncertainty sources of mean top height *** best model for estimating mean top height,based on statistical performance and biological rationale,had the asymptote defined as a local parameter and the growth rate and shape specified as global *** model outperformed its counterpart that had the growth rate specified as a local parameter and asymptote and shape as global *** selected model also outperformed alternative approaches such as the mixed-effects model,generalized algebraic difference approach,and the dummy variable *** trajectories for the mean top height of teak in Colombia are biologically sound based on the measured height series and previous studies in Latin *** suggest that most of the uncertainty associated with the mean top height growth of teak plantations in Colombia was largely explained by environmental *** best estimated model using the SDE approach can be useful for predicting height growth and evaluating site productivity of teak plantations in Colombia and in neighbouring countries with biophysical characteristics similar to those where teak has been planted in Colombia.

We evaluate the feasibility of recovering energy from the vibrations of track and sleepers,during passage of a high-speed train,by means of a pendulum harvester.A simple mathematical model of the parametric pendulum is employed to obtain numerical predictions,while measured data of vibration tests during the passage of a Thalys high-speed train are considered as input *** a sustained rotation is the most energetic motion of a pendulum,the possibility of achieving such state is evaluated,taking into account the influence of initial conditions,damping and other *** simulations show that rotating pendulum harvesters with sufficiently low viscous damping could be able to generate a usable average power on the order of 5–6 W per *** a modular arrangement of devices,such energy is enough to feed variety of rail-side equipment,as wireless sensors or warning light ***,a suitable choice of initial conditions could be a difficult task,leading to the need of a control action.

Various methods and specialized software programs are available for processing two- dimensional gel electrophoresis （2-DGE） images. However, due to the anomalies present in these images, a reliable, automated, and highly reproducible system for 2-DGE image analysis has still not been achieved. The most common anomalies found in 2-DGE images include vertical and hor- izontal streaking, fuzzy spots, and background noise, which greatly complicate computational anal- ysis. In this paper, we review the preprocessing techniques applied to 2-DGE images for noise reduction, intensity normalization, and background correction. We also present a quantitative comparison of non-linear filtering techniques applied to synthetic gel images, through analyzing the performance of the filters under specific conditions. Synthetic proteins were modeled into a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution with adjustable parameters for changing the size, intensity, and degradation. Three types of noise were added to the images： Gaussian, rayleigh, and exponen- tial, with signal-to-noise ratios （SNrs） ranging 8-20 decibels （dB）. We compared the performanceof wavelet, contourlet, total variation （TV）, and wavelet-total variation （WTTV） techniques using parameters SNr and spot efficiency. In terms of spot efficiency, contourlet and TV were more sen- sitive to noise than wavelet and WTTV. Wavelet worked the best for images with SNr ranging 10- 20 dB, whereas WTTV performed better with high noise levels. Wavelet also presented the best per- formance with any level of Gaussian noise and low levels （20-14 dB） of rayleigh and exponential noise in terms of SNr. Finally, the performance of the non-linear filtering techniques was evaluated using a real 2-DGE image with previously identified proteins marked. Wavelet achieved the best detection rate for the real image.

We are reporting the longest disease-free interval ever published for colorectal cancer, using gene profiling to confirm the linkage of the primary and metastasis. This rare case reports on a patient with late recurrence of colorectal cancer in the lung 19 years after its initial diagnosis. We used high-resolution array CGH(aCGH) to analyze the genetic aberrations of both the primary rectal and the recurrent metastatic lung lesions. Interestingly, we found striking similarities between the two lesions, despite the 19 years disease-free *** addition, most of the genes that were previously reported to be associated with a high recurrence score showed copy number gains by aCGH in one or both lesions. Our findings suggest that aCGH may be a helpful tool in analyzing the origin of metastatic lesions and reflect the need for a better understanding of the characteristics of the rectal tumors with a late recurrence potential.
