Classification of the Juturnaíba dam: Potential Risk and damage

A dam Safety Program aims to reduce the risks to human life, property, and the environment from dam related hazards. In Brazil, despite of the contemporary law about dam safety, there is still no cadastral information nor the classification of risk and associated potential damage to all dams. Besides that, the recent disaster caused by the failure of the Fund?o dam, located in Mariana city, Minas Gerais State, is an issue that aggravates the urgency of preventive measures and plans for disaster action. The present study proposes to classify the Juturnaíba dam, which maintains the largest reservoir for water supply in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Southeast region of Brazil. It was sought to analyze the risks and potential damage associated with the dam, in accordance with two classifications: one from the Brazilian dams Committee and the other from the National Water Resources Council. It was possible to conclude that the Juturnaíba dam potentially presents high risk and associated high rates of damage, both regarding losses of human lives and regarding environmental and socioeconomic impacts. This is mainly due to the poor state of conservation that it currently presents. It is recommended that future studies should assess the slope stability of the earth dam, and that repair work should be implemented on the degraded concrete structures, with recuperation or installation of instruments that would enable monitoring of possible movement of the earth dam.

The nuclear industry needs of prediction of behavior and life-time, for a wide range of normal, off-normal and accident conditions for safe and economic operation. Among different thermo-mechanical properties that can be predictable, the knowledge on the radial temperature distribution of the UO2 （uranium dioxide） nuclear fuel during the operation of nuclear reactors is essential for safety as different mechanical and thermal-hydraulic thresholds should be respected. One of the attributes of the Brazilian CNEN （Nuclear Energy Commission） is to assess the performance of the fuel rods used in these reactors in high-bumup regimes. The effective removal of the heat generated in the fuel rods constitutes one of the primary points to consider in the design of nuclear reactors. One of the important physical parameters in the study of heat conduction from the nuclear fuel to the coolant in a PWR （pressurized water reactor） is its thermal conductivity. It is therefore desirable that the empirical models, updated for the calculation of thermal conductivity in the fuel region be developed from new sets of experimental data from the irradiated fuel rods in controlled environments This paper presents the obtained results of implementing of a new model for thermal conductivity of the UO2 in the FRAPCON code.

Quantification of Thiamethoxam in Rhizomes and Leaves of the Hedychium coronarium and Water and Soil by High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography

The linearity, stability, accuracy and inter-day precisions of the assay method were evaluated in water, soil and rhizomes and leaves of Hedychium coronarium of the Zingiberaceae family. Mato Grosso do Sul is a predominantly agricultural state in Brazil and has many rivers and permanent and seasonal lakes, in which the Hedychium coronarium, an aquatic plant, is found the swampy environments. The prepared samples were analyzed quantitatively by High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Pda and UV detection for the presence of thiamethoxam. The thiamethoxam was recovered from these samples at rates ranging from 81.16% - 99.93%. The coefficient of variation in the quantitative analysis of the thiamethoxam was under 5%. The linearity of the method was determined by linear regression. The analysis of the samples spiked with known amounts of analyte demonstrated that the response was proportional to the concentrations of the samples with determination coefficients of r2 = 0.9992 (water and soil) and r2 = 0.9990 (leaves and rhizomes) for the linear range of the analytical calibration curves of the samples. The detection limit was 0.36 μg.L-1 and quantification limit was 1.2 μg.L-1 for thiamethoxam. The method was considered sensitive for quantification of the thiamethoxam in water, soil and rhizomes and leaves of Hedychium coronarium.

We conducted a geochemical study of the major elements of 29 clay samples from 10 mining fronts, which are used for ceramic coatings at Santa Gertrudes Ceramic Pole, São Paulo, Brazil. This region is considered as the biggest ceramic pole in Latin America. The mines are located in Corumbataí Formation (Paraná Sedimentary Basin) and are mined in bench system. The samples were analyzed as a whole and along each profile to evaluate the variation of the concentration of major elements and weathering effects. The results show a differentiation into three groups: 1) carbonate clays;2) lower portion samples;3) upper portion samples, and properties that allow obtaining useful information about the use and selection of raw materials to the formulation of ceramic masses and for quality control of raw materials in order to achieve products of similar quality.

The current study was developed with the purpose to evaluate the germination and the vigor of Kudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides), Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) and Calopog?nio seeds (Calopogonium mucunoides) submitted to 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of testing to natural (in situ incubation) and simulated conditions (in vitro incubation) from the ruminal environment of bovines. For each period of in situ and in vitro incubation, in each kind of seed, the percentage of normal plants was evaluated, as well as abnormal plants, hard seeds, soaked seeds and dead seeds, besides the index of germination speed (IGS). The results were submitted to the Duncan test at a 5% probability. Higher percentages of normal plants were verified in the Kudzu and in the Leucaena kinds, when the seeds were submitted to in situ incubation, as well as the IGS for the three forage species. The Calopog?nio seeds did not turn out to be susceptible of use in the in situ and in vitro incubations. The in vitro incubation revealed to be more harmful to the seeds of the three species used.
