Lower marine productivity increases agonistic interactions between sea lions and fur seals in Northern Pacific Patagonia

interspecific interactions are key drivers of individual and population-level fitness in a wide range of ***,in marine ecosystems,it is relatively unknown which biotic and abiotic factors impact behavioral interactions between competing *** assessed the impact of weather,marine productivity,and population structure on the behavioral agonistic interactions between South American fur seals(SAFSs),Arctocephalus australis,and South American sea lions(SASLs),Otaria byronia,in a breeding colony of *** hypothesized that agonistic interactions between SAFSs and SASLs respond to biotic and abiotic factors such as SAFS population structure,marine productivity,and *** found that SASL and SAFS interactions almost always resulted in negative impacts on the social structure or reproductive success of the SAFS *** adult males initiated stampedes of SAFS and/or abducted and predated SAFS *** SAFS males abundance and severe weather events were negatively correlated with agonistic interactions between ***,proxies for lower marine productivity such as higher sea surface temperature and lower catches of demerso-pelagic fish were the most important predictors of more frequent agonistic interactions between SAFS and *** the current scenario of decline in marine biomass due to global climate change and overfishing,agonistic interactions between competing marine predators could increase and exacerbate the negative impacts of environmental change in these species.

introduction, Collection and Characterization of Lotus spp. Germplasm in Chile

The information related with results of a project on germplasm characterization of three Lotus species, important as forage plants, curried out in five environments of the central-southern zone of Chile, was reviewed. An evaluation was made of 12 L. corniculatus cultivars introduced from different parts of the world, as well as germplasm naturalized in Chile, being 11 accessions of L. tenuis and 21 accessions of L. uliginosus collected from 33°S to 38°S and 38°S to 45°S, respectively. Phenological, morphological, and agronomical characters were evaluated. Nitrogen fixation in field conditions and concentrations of condensed tannins in herbage were also included. it is concluded that there are cultivars of high value in L. corniculatus introduced germplasm which can be recommended for different environments of the central zone of Chile, as well as for local species breeding programmes. information obtained from L. tenuis and L. uliginosus accessions shows genetic variability within both species. L. tenuis germplasm is adapted to clay, medium-textured, or sandy soils with water restrictions and phosphorous deficiency. Therefore, characterized accessions could be used to breed cultivars for low input production systems in constrained environments. L. uliginosus accessions include genotypes collected in sites with acid soils and variable tannin content in plant tissues that may be promissory genetic materials for breeding programmes with the objective of producing cultivars for animal production systems for the wet and acid soils in the southern zone of the country.

Social Construction of Dependence in Elderly Men in Chile

Based on a qualitative research restricted to aging processes in Chile, the paper presents the experience and significance of dependence in elderly men and how it is related with the social construction of old age. it is important to know how the identity of aging is configured when facing such a significant biographical and social landmark as the loss of functionality in later life. When analyzing the social construction of dependence in elderly men, three aspects of that configuration stand out: first, the way in which they understand and signify their situations of illness, physical problems, disability, and evaluation of their health;second, the characteristics of the social significant contexts in which disability or physical problems become evident;and third, the actions, roles or activities that they perform in those contexts, which are valued differently according to the experiences of dependence or autonomy. Dependence in elderly men does not appear as a static condition, but rather as a passage from physical-biological conditioners to the social context in which their everyday actions take place. So the agency of the dependence, its construction, experience and significance is the understanding of the social phenomenon of old age.
