Symptomatology of irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease during the menstrual cycle

Gender-related physiological variations in gastrointestinal(GI)symptomatology have been observed in women of reproductive *** women experience cyclical changes in GI symptomatology during their menstrual cycle,particularly alteration in their bowel *** studies of healthy women during the menstrual cycle showed a prolonged GI transit time during the luteal phase,either in the oro-cecumroute or in the *** GI symptoms,such as abdominal pain,bloating or diarrhea are observed in patients with irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)during *** may be due to elevated prostaglandin levels during menses,with an enhanced perception of viscera-somatic stimuli resulting in nausea,abdominal distension and *** patients with IBS or IBd demonstrate a cyclical pattern more closely related to their bowel habits than healthy *** with inflammatory bowel disease(IBd)also have exacerbated symptoms during menses;however,it is unclear whether this relates to physiological variation or disease exacerbation in IBS or *** examining the association of the menstrual cycle and GI symptomatology in patients with IBS or IBd,have not yet clarified the underlying *** medications—such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and oral contraceptive pills used for dysmenorrhea and menstrual migraine in those patients have not well been controlled for in the previous studies,which can contribute to further *** changes in GI symptomatology during the menstrual cycle may help to determine the true extent of disease exacerbation and proper management strategy.

Background and aims:Gastro-intestinal(GI)symptoms are often experienced by healthy women during *** increased frequency of GI symptoms during menses has also been reported in women with irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease(IBd);however,IBd patients with restorative proctocolectomy and ileal pouch-anal anastomoses(IPAA)have not been *** aimed to examine the association between GI symptoms before and during menses in patients with IPAA,and to assess factors for exacerbation of GI symptoms in those ***:Adult women recorded in the Pouchitis Registry were invited to participate in a mailed *** reported on GI symptoms 1–5 days prior to-(pre-menses)and during the days of their menses in recent *** and clinical variables were obtained through the survey and chart ***:One hundred and twenty-eight(21.3%)out of 600 women with IPAA responded to the survey ***(33.5%)were excluded for reasons including post-menopausal(n=25),hysterectomy(n=14)and use of contraceptives(n=4).Abdominal pain(P=0.001),diarrhea(P=0.021),and urgency(P=0.031)were more commonly reported during menses than pre-menses by the *** a history of painful menses was significantly associated with increased GI symptoms during menses for patients with ileal pouch(odds ratio=5.67;95%confidence interval:1.41–22.88;P=0.015).Conclusion:GI symptoms such as abdominal pain,diarrhea,and urgency are commonly associated with menses in patients with ileo-anal *** menses may be associated with worsening of GI symptoms.

Purpose To quantify the effects of an externally worn collar device for mitigating the influence of repetitive head impacts on alterations to diffusion tensor imaging(dTI)metrics of white *** Fifteen female high-school soccer athletes(age:14.00-16.98 yrs)completed pre-and post-season dTI over two consecutive years,including measures of diffusivity,changes in which may be associated with brain *** collar was worn during year 1(Yr1)but not during year 2(Yr2).Athlete exposures(AEs)and head impact exposure were recorded over the competitive *** There were no significant differences in AEs or head impact exposures between Yr1 and Yr2(P>0.05).In Yr2,there was significant pre-to post-season mean diffusivity and/or axial diffusivity reduction in multiple WM regions(cor-rected Pdiffusivity,axial diffusivity,and radial diffusivity decreases were 3.04%±2.53%,2.97%±2.19%,and 3.37%±3.34%,respectively,significantly greater than pre-to post-season changes in Yr1(mean dif-fusivity:-0.31%±1.78%,P=0.0014;axial diffusivity:-0.02%±2.25%,P=0.0014;radial diffusivity:-0.63%±2.10%,P=0.0030).Conclusions Mild bilateral compression to athletes'internal jugular vein through collar application may have increased intracranial blood volume and spatially redistributed head-impact-derived brain energy ***,future research is needed to elucidate the potential clinical significance of WM changes of various *** trails registration NCT03014492.

Based on the 2019 Health Survey for England,nearly two thirds of the adult population and one third of children(aged 2-15 years)are either overweight or obese(1).In England,obesity affects 28%of adults,20%of boys and 13%of girls(1).Obesity is a chronic,often life-long disease that associates with>50 weight-related conditions,most notably type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2d),and other dysmetabolic conditions that contribute towards the metabolic syndrome and many other conditions that impact on nearly every aspect of physiology and mental functioning(2).Obesity has a huge economic burden,with government estimates indicating the current costs of obesity in the UK at£6.1 billion to the National Health Service(NHS),and£27 billion to wider society(1).despite this,obesity remains fundamentally misunderstood and *** is reflected by woeful under-funding of management strategies for obesity(despite many of these being highly efficacious),guidelines that place time-limitations on potentially effective therapies(with possible negative outcomes that stem from subsequent weight re-gain),and a prevailing fog of obesity-related stigma that seems to pervade its way throughout society like a contagion.

Over the past decades the notion of ＇inflammation＇ has been extended beyond the original hallmarks of rubor （redness）, calor （heat）, tumor （swelling） and dolor （pain） described by Celsus. We have gained a more detailed understanding of the cellular players and molecular mediators of inflammation which is now being applied and extended to areas of biomedical research such as cancer, obesity, heart disease, metabolism, auto-inflammatory disorders, autoimmunity and infectious diseases. Innate cytokines are often central components of inflammatory responses. Here, we discuss how the type I interferon and interleukin-1 cytokine pathways represent distinct and specialized categories of inflammatory responses and how these key mediators of inflammation counter-regulate each other.

China's landscape in oncology drug research:perspectives from research collaboration networks

Objective： Better understanding of China＇s landscape in oncology drug research is of great significance for discovering anti-cancer drugs in future. This article differs from previous studies by focusing on Chinese oncology drug research communities in co-publication networks at the institutional level. Moreover, this research aims to explore structures and behaviors of relevant research units by thematic community analysis and to address policy recommendations. Methods： This research used social network analysis to define an institutions network and to identify a community network which is characterized by thematic content. Results： A total of 675 sample articles from 2008 through 2012 were retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded （SCIE） database of Web of Science, and top institutions and institutional pairs are highlighted for further discussion. Meanwhile, this study revealed that institutions based in the Chinese mainland are located in a relatively central position, Taiwan＇s institutions are closely assembled on the side, and Hong Kong＇s units located in the middle of the Chinese mainland＇s and Taiwan＇s. Spatial division and institutional hierarchy are still critical barriers to research collaboration in the field of anti-cancer drugs in China. In addition, the communities focusing on hot research areas show the higher nodal degree, whereas communities giving more attention to rare research subjects are relatively marginalized to the periphery of network. Conclusions= This paper offers policy recommendations to accelerate cross-regional cooperation, such as through developing information technology and increasing investment. The brokers should focus more on outreach to other institutions. Finally, participation in topics of common interest is conducive to improved efficiency in research and development （R＆d） resource allocation.

“Cut-and-paste” method for the rapid prototyping of soft electronics

Unlike wafer-based rigid electronics, soft electronics have many unique advantages including thinness, flexibility, stretchability,conformability, lightweight, large area, as well as low cost. As a result, they have demonstrated many emerging capabilities in healthcare devices, soft robotics, and human-machine interface. Instead of conventional microfabrication, there is an evergrowing interest in the freeform or digital manufacture of soft electronics. This review provides a survey for a cost-and timeeffective subtractive manufacturing process called the "cut-and-paste" method. It employs a mechanical cutter plotter to form patterns on various electronically functional membranes such as sheets of metals, functional polymers, and even two-dimensional(2d) materials, supported by a temporary tape. The patterned membranes can then be pasted on soft substrates such as medical tapes or even human skin. This process is completely dry and desktop. It does not involve any rigid wafers and is hence capable of making large-area electronics. The process can be repeated to integrate multiple materials on a single *** circuits(ICs) and rigid components can be added through a "cut-solder-paste" process. Multilayer devices can also be fabricated through lamination. We therefore advocate that the "cut-and-paste" method is a very versatile approach for the rapid prototyping of soft electronics for various applications.

Resilience indicators support valuation of estuarine ecosystem restoration under climate change

The role that visual discriminative ability plays among giant pandas in social communication and individual discrimination has received less attention than olfactory and auditory ***,we used an eye-tracker technology to investigate pupil fixation patterns for 8 captive male giant pandas Ailuropoda *** paired images(N=26)of conspecifics against:1)sympatric predators(gray wolves and tigers),and non-threatening sympatric species(golden pheasant,golden snub-nosed monkey,takin,and red panda),2)conspecifics with atypical fur colora-tion(albino and brown),and 3)zookeepers/non-zookeepers wearing either work uniform or plain *** each session,we tracked the pan-da's pupil movements and measured pupil first fixation point(FFP),fixation latency,total fixation count(TFC),and duration(TFd)of attention to each ***,pandas exhibited similar attention(FFPs and TFCs)to images of predators and non-threatening sympatric *** of golden pheasant,snub-nosed monkey,and tiger received less attention(TFd)than images of conspecifics,whereas images of takin and red panda received more attention,suggesting a greater alertness to habitat or food competitors than to potential ***'TFCs were greater for images of black-white conspecifics than for albino or brown phenotypes,implying that familiar color elicited more *** reacted differently to images of men versus *** images of women only,pandas gave more attention(TFC)to familiar combinations(uniformed zookeepers and plain-clothed non-zookeepers),consistent with the familiarity *** pandas can use visual perception to discriminate intra-specifically and inter-specifically,including details of human appearance,has applications for panda conservation and captive husbandry.
