Effects of purposeful soccer heading on circulating small extracellular vesicle concentration and cargo

background:Considering the potential cumulative effects of repetitive head impact(HI)exposure,we need sensitive biomarkers to track shortand long-term effects.Circulating small extracellular vesicles(sEVs)(biological molecules throughout the body and may have diagnostic value as biomarkers for disease.The purpose of this study was to identify the microRNA(miRNA)profile in circulating sEVs derived from human plasma following repetitive HI exposure.Methods:Healthy adult(aged 18-35 years)soccer players were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups:the HI group performed 10 standing headers,the leg impact group performed 10 soccer ball trapping maneuvers over 10 min,and the control group did not participate in any soccer drills.Plasma was collected before testing and 24 h afterward,and sEVs were isolated and characterized via nanoparticle tracking analysis.Next-generation sequencing was utilized to identify candidate miRNAs isolated from sEVs,and candidate microRNAs were analyzed via quantitative polymerase chain reaction.In silico target prediction was performed using TargetScan(Version 7.0;***)and miRWalk(http://mirwalk.***.uni-heidelberg.de/)programs,and target validation was performed using luciferase reporter vectors with a miR-7844-5p mimic in human embryonic kidney(HEK)293T/17 cells.Results:Plasma sEV concentration and size were not affected across time and group following repetitive HI exposure.After 24 h,the HI read count from next-generation sequencing showed a 4-fold or greater increase in miR-92b-5p,miR-423-5p,and miR-24-3p and a 3-fold or greater decrease in miR-7844-5p,miR-144-5p,miR-221-5p,and miR-22-3p.Analysis of quantitative polymerase chain reaction revealed that leg impact did not alter the candidate miRNA levels.To our knowledge,miR-7844-5p is a previously unknown miRNA.We identified 8 miR-7844-5p mRNA targets:protein phosphatase 1 regulatory inhibitor subunit 1b(PPP1R1b),LIM and senescent cell antigen-like domains 1(LIMS1),autophagy-related 12(ATG12),microtubule-associated protein 1

batteries,fuel cells,and supercapacitors are electrochemical devices already on the market and still need a boost in kinetics to match the high energy density demand of applications.Perovskites have attracted the scientific community's attention in the last decade due to their electrocatalytic activity,chemical and structural properties,tunability,low cost,and scalability.Efforts have been made to understand the active sites and the operational mechanisms in perovskite oxides to shape them as an electrocatalyst in advanced energy devices.Understanding the role of perovskites is the key to engineering more controlled and efficient electrocatalysts via chemical synthesis,and there is still much to do.This review highlights the use of perovskites in different energy storage and conversion systems.The A,b,and A&b doping-site effects are analyzed to understand the opportunities and challenges related to this class of materials.In addition,the synthesis methods and the properties related to the doping site are described and summarized.

Supercapacitors(SCs) are high-power energy storage devices with ultra-fast charge/discharge properties.SCs using concentrated aqueous-based electrolytes can work at low temperatures due to their intrinsic properties, such as higher freezing point depression(FPD) and robustness. besides the traditional organic-and aqueous-based(salt-in-water) electrolytes used in SCs, water-in-salt(WISE) sodium perchlorate electrolytes offer high FPD, non-flammability, and low-toxicity conditions, allowing the fabrication of safer, environmentally friendly, and more robust devices. For the first time, this work reports a comprehensive study regarding WISE system’s charge-storage capabilities and physicochemical properties under low-temperature conditions(T bon-based electrodes. The effect of temperature reduction on the electrolyte viscosity and electrical properties was investigated using different techniques and the in-situ(or operando) Raman spectroscopy under dynamic polarization conditions.The cell voltage, equivalent series resistance, and specific capacitance were investigated as a function of the temperature. The cell voltage(U) increased ~ 50%, while the specific capacitance decreased ~20%when the temperature was reduced from 25 ℃ to -10 ℃. As a result, the maximum specific energy(E = CU^(2)/2) increased ~ 100%. Therefore, low-temperature WISEs are promising candidates to improve the energy-storage characteristics in SCs.

Compressing supercapacitor(SCs)electrode is essential for improving the energy storage characteristics and minimizing ions’distance travel,faradaic reactions,and overall ohmic resistance.Studies comprising the ion dynamics in SC electrodes under compression are still rare.So,the ionic dynamics of five aqueous electrolytes in electrodes under compression were studied in this work for tracking electrochemical and structural changes under mechanical stress.A superionic state is formed when the electrode is compressed until the micropores match the dimensions with the electrolyte’s hydrated ion sizes,which increases the capacitance.If excessive compression is applied,the accessible pore regions decrease,and the capacitance drops.Hence,as the studied hydrated ions have different dimensions,the match between ion/pore sizes differs.To the LiOH and NaClO4electrolytes,increasing the pressure from 60 to 120 and 100 PSI raised the capacitance from 13.5 to 35.2 F g^(-1)and 30.9 to 39.0 F g^(-1),respectively.So,the KOH electrolyte with the lowest and LiCl with the biggest combination of hydrated ion size have their point of maximum capacitance(39.5 and 36.7F g^(-1))achieved at 140 and 80 PSI,respectively.To LiCl and KCl electrolytes,overcompression causes a drop in capacitance higher than 23%.

We discuss here essential aspects of the experimental supercapacitors characterization by a series of well-known electrochemical methods.We are motivated by a considerable number of publications that misreport procedures and results.Authors often conceal or neglect essential information about the electrochemical analytical apparatus used and its configuration.The lack of such information may lead researchers,especially inexperienced ones,to misunderstand the procedures and results.Eventually,the misled electrochemical equipment configuration favors misinterpretation of data and low reproducibility rates.This paper aims to highlight these issues and clarify them.We explain fundamental concepts of some electrochemical analytical methods,such as cyclic voltammetry,galvanostatic charge-discharge,single potential step chronoamperometry,and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy,focusing on the supercapacitor field.Distinct configurations of electrical parameters are presented and discussed to highlight the effects of incorrect setup and uncover misleading results.We discuss how the electrochemical setup and data analyses matter in reliable data results for the supercapacitor.

Assessment of benefits and risks of growing Jatropha(Jatropha curcas) as a biofuel crop in sub-Saharan Africa: a contribution to agronomic and socio-economic policies

In sub-Saharan Africa（SSA）, the main goals behind the development of a biofuel industry are employment creation and income generation. Jatropha（Jatropha curcas L.） has emerged as a candidate for biodiesel production. It is a non-edible oil producing, drought-resistant plant that can be grown on marginal land with limited water and low soil fertility. However, these are also attributes that typify weedy and invasive plant species. Adding to these concerns are the general questioning of whether biofuel production will reduce Greenhouse gas（GHG）emissions globally. Currently, there is limited information on the potential invasiveness of many biofuel crops, and in particular, the potential risks of cultivating Jatropha. This paper aims to assess the benefits and risks, especially risks,of growing Jatropha for biodiesel production. Jatropha should be screened through a science-based risk-assessment procedure to predict the risk of becoming invasive before it is released for large-scale commercial cultivation.The net GHG savings can be achieved through the cultivation of Jatropha, considering two main factors： no landuse change and crop management without chemical fertilization.

Trace elements migrating from tailings to rock varnish laminated sediments in an old mining region from Nelson,Nevada,USA

The dispersion and influence of soluble and particulate trace elements(TEs) present in the materials from abandoned mines is an imminent problem on terrestrial and aquatic environments.The goal of this research is to provide a broader view of such transport,assessing particle size distribution and TE interactions(e.g.,scavenging) with mine tailings and locally derived sediments transported by water in arid region.Sand grains from wash sediment were collected from a dry ephemeral wash in Nelson,Nevada where the Techatticup Mine and Mill worked between 1850 and 1960.Samples were evaluated to determine the association and behavior of certain metals and metalloids including aluminum,arsenic,barium,cadmium,copper,chromium,iron,manganese,lead,selenium,vanadium,and zinc to rock varnish laminated sediments.Results show that some metals and metalloids were more concentrated on larger particles whereas others indicated the opposite tendency.For example,As was greatest on silt fractions and least on coarse fractions,while Se was detected only on silts.Cr,Cu,Fe,Mn,Pb,and Zn concentrations all increased with decreasing particle size(silt> sand> coarse),whereas Al,ba,and V showed the opposite trend(silt b,As,and Se were lower in mine tailing sediment treated with wash than those obtained for source material.However in treated wash sediment samples,the high EFs of ba,Cr,V,and Mn suggested a possible greater affinity of these metals to the Al,Fe,and Mn oxides from the RV sediment.The data found in this study show that transport of contaminated sediments in arid regions could lead to the enrichment of some TEs in downgradient areas from source materials.

background:Changes of land cover modify the characteristics of habitat,host-vector interaction and consequently infection rates of disease causing agents.In this paper,we report variations in tsetse distribution patterns,abundance and infection rates in relation to habitat types and age in the Maasai Steppe of northern Tanzania.In Africa,Tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiasis negatively impacted human life where about 40 million people are at risk of contracting the disease with dramatic socio-economical consequences,for instance,loss of livestock,animal productivity,and manpower.Methods:We trapped tsetse flies in dry and wet seasons between October 2014 and May 2015 in selected habitats across four villages:Emboreet,Loiborsireet,Kimotorok and Oltukai adjacent to protected areas.Data collected include number and species of tsetse flies caught in baited traps,PCR identification of trypanosome species and extraction of monitored Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer(MODIS).Results:Our findings demonstrate the variation of tsetse fly species abundance and infection rates among habitats in surveyed villages in relation to NDVI and host abundance.Results have shown higher tsetse fly abundance in Acacia-swampy ecotone and riverine habitats for Emboreet and other villages,respectively.Tsetse abundance was inconsistent among habitats in different villages.Emboreet was highly infested with Glossina swynnertoni(68%)in ecotone and swampy habitats followed by G.morsitans(28%)and G.pallidipes(4%)in riverine habitat.In the remaining villages,the dominant tsetse fly species by 95%was G.pallidipes in all habitats.Trypanosoma vivax was the most prevalent species in all infected flies(95%)with few observations of co-infections(with T.congolense or T.brucei).Conclusions:The findings of this study provide a framework to mapping hotspots of tsetse infestation and trypanosomiasis infection and enhance the communities to plan for effective control of trypanosomiasis.
