Irrigation infrastructure expansion threatens the diversity of freshwater fish *** infrastructure creates migration barriers which can block access to important nursery,feeding and spawning *** PDR is a landlocked country situated within the Lower Mekong River Basin where there is a substantial dependency on rice and fish for food,income and *** country is experiencing an unprecedented boom in irrigation infrastructure investment,with modernisation programs being implemented in every *** significant investment in infrastructure upgrades,and the potential impact on freshwater fish,little consideration has been given to fish passage *** 2008,we commenced a fish passage program in Lao *** intent of this case study is to outline the pivotal elements of the program of knowledge development and transfer,in the context of river connectivity and fisheries management in Lao *** also highlight challenges in international research in development and lessons learned.

Looking down on sperm motion： a useful addeddimension？

The assumed association of sperm motility with fertility has long beena preoccupation of clinicians. Whereas assessing fertility of a couple has relatively easy end-points （time to pregnancy, number of children）, assessing motility does not. ＂[he many methods developed to determine it include assessing a sperm population subjectively （by grading） and objectively （by measuring its motion-induced movement into a light beam by spectrophotometry or nephelometry）, and making measurements on individual sperm cells （by stroboscopic or multiple-exposure photography or digitized video-recordings）.

Carbon Dioxide Control-Technology for the Future

The world is experiencing global climate change, and most scientists attribute it to the accumulation in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. Because of its enormous emission rate, carbon dioxide （CO2） is the main culprit. Almost all the anthropogenic CO2 emissions come from the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation. Emissions of COg can be reduced by conservation, increased use of renewable energy sources, and increased efficiencies in both the production of electrical power and the transportation sector. Capture of CO2 can be accomplished with wet scrubbing, dry sorption, or biogenic fixation. After CO2 is captured, it must be transported either as a liquid or a supercritical fluid, which realistically can only be accomplished by pipeline or ship. Final disposal of CO2 will either be to underground reservoirs or to the ocean; at present, the underground option seems to be the only viable one. Various strategies and technologies involved with reduction of CO2 emissions and carbon capture and sequestration （CCS） are briefly reviewed in this paper.

Effects of cryoprotectant treatments on bovine sperm function and osmolyte content

The hypothesis that addition and removal of cryoprotectants to and from spermatozoa would initiate regulatory volume decrease, and lead to osmolyte loss and reduced sperm function, was tested. Common cryoprotectants, in the absence of freezing and thawing, affected bovine ejaculated spermatozoa by lowering their total and progressive motility in medium, reducing their migration through surrogate cervical mucus, damaging sperm head membranes and inducing sperm tail coiling. Sperm function was slightly better maintained after cryoprotectants were added and removed in multiple small steps rather than in a single step. The intracellular content of the polyol osmolytes, D-sorbitol and myo-inositol, exceeded that of the zwitterion osmolytes, L-carnitine and L-glutamate. Certain cryoprotectants reduced intracellular L-camitine and L-glutamate concentration but not that of myo-inositol or D-sorbitol. Multistep treatments with some cryoprotectants had advantages over one-step treatments in mucus penetration depending on the original amount of intracellular camitine and glutamate in the spermatozoa. Overall, sperm quality was best maintained by multistep treatment with glycerol and propanediols that were associated with decreased intracellular glutamate concentration. Bovine spermatozoa seem to use glutamate to regulate cryoprotectant-induced cell swelling.

Combining targeted therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors in the treatment of metastatic melanoma

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and has an incidence that is rising faster than any other solid tumor. Metastatic melanoma treatment has considerably progressed in the past five years with the introduction of targeted therapy(BRAF and MEK inhibitors) and immune checkpoint blockade(anti-CTLA4, anti-PD-1, and anti-PD-L1). However, each treatment modality has limitations. Treatment with targeted therapy has been associated with a high response rate, but with short-term responses. Conversely, treatment with immune checkpoint blockade has a lower response rate, but with longterm responses. Targeted therapy affects antitumor immunity, and synergy may exist when targeted therapy is combined with immunotherapy. This article presents a brief review of the rationale and evidence for the potential synergy between targeted therapy and immune checkpoint blockade. Challenges and directions for future studies are also proposed.

ENSO and Southeast Asian biomass burning modulate subtropical trans-Pacific ozone transport

Trans-Pacific transport of enhanced ozone plumes has been mainly attributed to fossil fuel combustion in Asia in spring, but less attention has been paid to vegetation fires in Asia. Here we show that the El Ni?noSouthern Oscillation(ENSO)-modulated fires in Southeast Asia, rather than Asian fossil fuel plumes,dominate the interannual variability of springtime trans-Pacific transport of ozone across the entire North Pacific Ocean. During El Ni?no springs, the intensified fires from both the Indochinese Peninsula and Indonesia, together with large-scale circulation anomalies, result in enhanced ozone plumes that stretch over 15 000 km in both the lower-middle and upper troposphere. This enhancement is also observed in the in situ measurements of ozone concentration, with an almost 10% increase at Mauna Loa Observatory,Hawaii, a unique site to monitor the long-distance transport over the North Pacific. This study reports an unexpectedly strong influence of vegetation fires, linked with climate variability, on global tropospheric chemistry and proves once more how complex the interactions in the climate system are.
