Iraq covers an area of 437072 km2 in the northeastern part of the Middle East. Its population now is more than 40 million. It relies mainly on its water resources from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and their tributaries. Recently, Iraq has been experiencing a severe water scarcity problem. This is mainly due to climate change, increased hydrological projects in riparian countries, and water resources mismanagement inside Iraq itself. To overcome the problem, a new strategy should be implemented. Such strategy should consider two main courses of action: a) serious negotiations with riparian countries to reach an agreement giving Iraq equitable water shares from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and their tributaries. b) Prudent water management practices inside Iraq that consider adopting realistic distribution of water between the governorates, rational policies aiming at increased water use efficiencies within Irrigation networks, increased use of non-conventional sources of water, adjustment of water tariffs and their collection procedures, improving agricultural techniques, introduction of intensive guidance and public awareness programs, and promulgation of new legislations, in addition to creation of human resources development programs.

A study on variable charge soils （volcanic Italian and podzolic Scottish soils） was performed to investigate the influence of soil properties on the chemical composition of soil solution. Zinc speciation, bioavallability and toxicity in the soil solution were examined. The soils were spiked with increasing amounts of Zn （0, 100, 200, 400 and 1000 mg/kg） and the soil solutions were extracted using rhizon soil moisture samplers. The pH, total organic carbon （TOC）, base cations, anions, total Zn and free Zn^2＋ in soil solution were analysed. A rapid bioassay with the luminescent bacterium Escherichia coli HB 101 pUCD607 was performed to assess Zn toxicity. The influence of soil type and Zn treatments on the chemical composition of soil solution and on Zn toxicity was considered and discussed. Different trends of total and free Zn concentrations, base cations desorption and luminescence of E. coli HB 101 pUCD607 were observed. The soil solution extracted from the volcanic soils had very low total and free Zn concentrations and showed specific Zn^2＋/Ca^2＋ exchange. The soil solution from the podzolic soil had much higher total and free Zn concentrations and showed no evidence of specific Zn^2＋/Ca^2＋ exchange. In comparison with the subalkaline volcanic soils, the acidic podzol showed enhanced levels of toxic free Zn^2＋ and consequently stronger effects on E. coli viability.

When foraging on carrion resources, the wasp Vespula germanica usually makes repeated visits to the feeding site until depleting the resource. In the present study we analyzed how environmental cues affect wasps＇ behavior when re-locating a protein food source. We studied this behavior in two different natural habitats： closed and open habitats. As closed habitats have more references to orient wasps to the feeding site than open habitats, we hypothesized that they would return to the foraging site more frequently in closed habitats than in open ones. We tested this hypothesis by studying wasp behavior in three different natural habitat conditions：（i） closed habitats, （ii） open habitats, and （iii） open habitats artificially modified by adding five sticks with flagging. Experiments consisted of training individual wasps to feed from a certain array, and at the testing phase we removed food and displaced the array by 60 cm. Therefore, we recorded wasps＇ choices when returning to the training area, by counting both the wasps＇ first approaches and the number of visits to the original feeding site and the displaced array. Wasps＇ behavior while re-locating a protein food source was different if foraging at open or closed habitats. Wasps more frequently re- visited a previous feeding location when foraging in closed habitats than when foraging in open ones. Furthermore, wasps more frequently visited the displaced array than the original feeding site in all three treatments. Nevertheless, when wasps were trained in closed habitats, they returned to the original feeding site more frequently than if trained in open ones. Interestingly, when five sticks with flagging were added in open habitats, wasps responded similarly as in closed habitats without these references. While foraging,Vespula germanica usually return to abundant food *** this relocation behavior,these wasps learn to identify contextual cues associated with food *** analyzed associative blocking in this species,that is,how an association with a conditioned stimulus(CS1)blocks subsequent learning when a novel stimulus(CS2)is added on a second foraging *** groups of wasps(A,B,and C;total 74 individual wasps)were observed while collecting meat during one or two consecutive *** group A,an environmental cue(CS1)was paired with food placed at a specific site,and on the second visit,a second cue(CS2)was added while food remained in the same *** a subsequent testing phase,CS1 was removed and the food source displaced *** then recorded the number of hovers performed over the empty dish(previously baited).Group A wasps appeared to ignore the addition of CS2 on their second visit because they performed fewer hovers over the learned *** group A,the duration of the decision-making process to finally fly toward the baited dish was shorter than when CS1 and CS2 were presented together on their first visit(group B).This is the first study to demonstrate the occurrence of associative blocking in vespids,confirming that a prior foraging experience influences subsequent food relocation in *** findings reveal that first learning episodes block further associations with novel contextual cues,contributing to understanding of complex cognitive processes involved in ***´s foraging behavior.

Memory has been little studied in social wasps. Vespula germanica （Fab.）（Hymenoptera： Vespidae） frequently revisits nondepleted food sources, making several trips between the resource and the nest. In this study, we analyzed this relocating behavior in order to evaluate whether this species is capable of remembering an established association after 1 h. To this end, we trained wasps to feed from a certain array. Then it was removed, setting it up again 1 h later, but this time 2 baited feeders were put in place, one at the original feeding site and the other opposite the first. We recorded the proportion of returning foragers, and their choice of feeder, after either 1 or 4 feeding trials. After 1 h, 78% of wasps trained with 4 feeding trials and 65% trained with 1, returned to the experimental area. Furthermore, during the testing phase, wasps trained with 4 feeding trials collected food from the previously learned feeder significantly more frequently than from the nonlearned one （P 〈 0.05）. In contrast, wasps that had been trained only once chose both feeders equally. Thus, memory retrieval could be observed 1 h after wasps had collected food on 4 consecutive occasions, but not after only 1. To our knowledge, this is the first study showing that V. germanica is capable of remembering an association 1 h after the last associative event, demonstrating that 1 h does not impair memory retention if4 feeding experiences have occurred.

In the present article we characterized the emissions at the exhaust of a Common Rail （CR） diesel engine, representative of lightduty class, equipped with a catalyzed diesel particulate filter （CDPF） in controlled environment. The downstream exhausts were directly analyzed （for PM, CO, CO/, Oz, HCs, NOx） by infrared and electrochemical sensors, and SEM-EDS microscope; heavy metals were chemically analyzed using mosses and lichens in bags, and glass-fibre filters all exposed at the engine exhausts. The highest particle emission value was in the 7-54 nm size range; the peak concentration rose until one order of magnitude for the highest load and speed. Particle composition was mainly carbonaceous, associated to noticeable amounts of Fe and silica fibres. Moreover, the content of Cu, Fe, Na, Ni and Zn in both moss and lichen, and of A1 and Cr in moss, was significantly increased. Glass-fibre filters were significantly enriched in A1, B, Ba, Cu, Fe, Na, and Zn. The role of diesel engines as source of carbonaceous nanoparticles has been confirmed, while further investigations in controlled environment are needed to test the catalytic muffler as a possible source of silica fibres considered very hazardous for human health.

Social insects exhibit complex learning and memory mechanisms while for- aging. Vespula germanica （Fab.）（Hymenoptera： Vespidae） is an invasive social wasp that frequently forages on undepleted food sources, making several flights between the resource and the nest. Previous studies have shown that during this relocating behavior, wasps learn to associate food with a certain site, and can recall this association 1 h later. In this work, we evaluated whether this wasp species is capable of retrieving an established association after 24 h. For this purpose, we trained free flying individuals to collect proteinaceous food from an experimental plate （feeder） located in an experimental array. A total of 150 individuals were allowed 2, 4, or 8 visits. After the training phase, the array was re- moved and set up again 24 h later, but this time a second baited plate was placed opposite to the first. After 24 h we recorded the rate of wasps that returned to the experimental area and those which collected food from the previously learned feeding station or the nonlearned one. During the testing phase, we observed that a low rate of wasps trained with 2 collecting visits returned to the experimental area （22%）, whereas the rate of returning wasps trained with 4 or 8 collecting visits was higher （51% and 41%, respectively）. Moreover, wasps trained with 8 feeding visits collected food from the previously learned feeding station at a higher rate than those that did from the nonlearned one. In contrast, wasps trained 2 or 4 times chose both feeding stations at a similar rate. Thus, significantly more wasps returned to the previously learned feeding station after 8 repeated foraging flights but not after only 2 or 4 visits. This is the first report that demonstrates the existence of long-term spatial memory in V. germanica wasps.

The tick, Ixodes scapularis, vectors pathogens such as Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. Over the last few decades I. scapularis has expanded its range, introducing a novel health threat into these areas. Warming temperatures appear to be one cause of its range expansion to the north. However, other factors are also involved. We show that unfed adult female ticks infected with B. burgdorferi have greater overwintering survival than uninfected female ticks. Locally collected adult female ticks were placed in individual microcosms and allowed to overwinter in both forest and dune grass environments. In the spring we collected the ticks and tested both dead and living ticks for B. burgdorferi DNA. Infected ticks had greater overwintering survival compared with uninfected ticks every winter for three consecutive winters in both forest and dune grass environments. We discuss the most plausible explanations for this result. The increased winter survival of adult female ticks could enhance tick population growth. Our results suggest that, in addition to climate change, B. burgdorferi infection itself may be promoting the northern range expansion of I. scapularis. Our study highlights how pathogens could work synergistically with climate change to promote host range expansion.

This study examines the use of an aggregation-induced enhanced emission fluorophore(TPE-MRh)to prepare red-emitting luminescent solar concentrators(LSCs)based on poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)and poly(cyclohexyl methacrylate)(PCMA).TPE-MRh is a tetraphenylethylene(TPE)derivative bearing two dimethylamino push groups and a 3-methyl-rhodanine pull moiety,with absorption maxima at around 500 nm and fluorescence peak at 700 nm that strongly increases in ***-MRh displays a typical crystallizationinduced enhanced emission that has been rationalized by modeling the compound behavior in solution and solid-state via density functional theory calculations with the inclusion of the ***-MRh dispersed into 5×5 cm2 polymer films with a thickness of 25±5μm has revealed a partial fluorescence quenching with fluorophore *** yields(QYs)below 10%for the 2 wt.%of doping have been addressed to the formation of less emissive micro-sized clusters of *** slabs with the same surface size but 3 mm of thickness and 200 ppm of TPE-MRh have provided QY of 36.5%thanks to the attenuation of the detrimental effects of fluorophore *** feature is reflected in the LSCs performance,with devices achieving the largest power collected by the photovoltaic cell.
