Decline of Traditional Landscape in a Protected Area of the Southwestern Alps:the Fate of Enclosed Pasture Patches in the Land Mosaic Shift

【Title】【Author】【Addresses】1Traditional landscape elements such as pasture patches enclosed in a forest matrix are progressively disappearing throughout the European Alps. We assessed the land mosaic shift of a protected area located in the western Italian Alps. In particular, the dynamics of pasture patches were studied at both landscape and stand level. Land-cover mapping through object-oriented analysis of historical aerial photographs was used to assess land-cover changes between 1954 and 2000. Spatial statistics were used to quantify landscape patterns, and field samplings within pasture patches were used to explore tree regeneration structure and composition. Our results showed a significant increase in the number of pasture patches caused by their fragmentation following forest expansion. The total surface area of pasture patches decreased by 43% and their core area decreased by 94%. The encroachment of trees on less accessible areas of the pasture patches caused a reduction of patch shape at landscape scale. The gap filling process started 40-50 years ago and began with an early invasion of light demanding species like sycamore maple （Acer pseudoplatanus L.） and common ash （Fraxinus excelsior L.）, followed by European beech （Fagus sylvatica L.） and secondarily silver fir （Abies alba Mill.）. Traditional land-use and population decline in the Pesio Valley led to a reduction in ecotone areas. A transition to a more homogeneous landscape is expected in the next decades. Given the cultural and productive nature of these mountain meadow-pasture communities, extensive livestock grazing systems could be used to manage their future conservation.

Development of AI-and Cu-based nanocomposites reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets： Fabrication and characterization

Aluminum and copper matrix nanocomposites reinforced by graphene nanoplatelets （GNPs） were successfully fabricated by a wet mixing method followed by conventional powder metallurgy. The uniform dispersion of GNPs within the metal matrices showed that the wet mixing method has a great potential to be used as a mixing technique. However, by increasing the GNPs content, GNPs agglomeration was more visible. DSC and XrD of AI/GNPs nanocomposites showed that no new phase formed below the melting point of AI. Microstructural observations in both nanocomposites reveal the evident grain refinement effect as a consequence of GNPs addition. The interfacial bonding evaluation shows a poor interfacial bonding between GNPs and AI, while the interfacial bonding between Cu and GNPs is strong enough to improve the properties of the Cu/GNPs nanocomposites. In both composites, the coefficient of thermal expansion decreases as a function of GNPs while, their hardness is improved by increasing the GNPs content as well as their elastic modulus.

The burgeoning field of cancer immunology demands a change in the paradigm of cancer patient management. The understanding of the course of a given malignant disease should also include the host immune system as one of the key factors in determining the patient's prognosis. Surgical and medical oncologists need to understand the basic and advanced applications of immunotherapies, which are rapidly evolving, and are nowadays an integral part of the armamentarium for the treatment of cancer patients. In the present work, we review the current knowledge concerning the immune landscape of colorectal cancer (CrC) patients with liver metastases, as recently discovered.

Surgical treatment of synchronous colorectal liver and lung metastases： the usefulness of thoracophrenolaparotomy for single stage resection

When suitable, surgery still remains the therapeutic option to be preferred for patients carrier of colorectal liver and lung metastases. Since thoracophrenolaparotomy should be helpful during liver resection for some of these patients, simultaneous removal of right lung metastases can be proposed through this approach. Eleven consecutive patients（median age of 53 years） carrier of colorectal liver and lung metastases, underwent single session surgical resection of both liver and right lung lesions by means of J-shaped thoracophrenolaparotomy. The median number of liver metastases removed was 5（range 2-30） and of lung metastases removed was 2（range 1-3）. Lung metastases were located in the upper lobe in 1 patient, in the middle lobe in 2, in the lower lobe in 6, and in the upper and lower lobe in 2. Mortality and major morbidity were nil. Two patients had a minor morbidity： one had wound infection and bile leakage treated conservatively and the other had transient fever. Mean overall survival was 24.4 months. An aggressive surgical approach should be undertaken for colorectal metastases： in case of multifocal liver disease with complex presentations, J-shaped thoracophrenolaparotomy could be considered as safe approach for combined liver and right lung metastasectomies.

With the recent introduction of NarrowBand Internet of Things(NB-IoT)technology in the 4th and 5th generations of mobile radio networks,the mobile communications context opens up significantly to the world of *** means of NB-IoT,the mobile systems within 3GPP standardization introduce the peculiar functions of sensor networks,thus making it possible to satisfy very specific requirements with respect to those which characterize traditional mobile *** the functions of interest for sensor networks,the possibility of locating the positions of the sensors without an increase in costs and energy consumption of the sensor nodes is of utmost *** present work describes a procedure for locating the NB-IoT nodes based on the quality of radio signals received by the mobile terminals,which therefore does not require further hardware implementations on board the *** procedure,based on the rF fingerprinting technique and on machine learning processing,has been tested experimentally and has achieved interesting performances.

Is the exposure to liver transplantation worthwhile for trainees in liver surgery?

In the May 2022 issue of Annals of Surgery,Albert *** and colleagues reported interesting results on the effect of liver transplantation(LT)experience in performing complex liver resection(CLr)(1).By considering 1,452 LT and 222 CLr over a period of 24 years,performed in a worldwide recognized center for LT and liver surgery,they had 25.2%major complications and 6.3%mortality after ***,they found that the more experience in LT,the less risk of postoperative complications after *** also indicated the cutoff of 95 LT;meaning that at below such number,the rate of complications after CLr significantly increased(1).

Efficacy of radiofrequency ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma prior to liver transplantation and the need for competing-risk analysis

radiofrequency ablation(rFA)currently represents a potentially curative treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)in its early stages(1,2).Providing higher rates of complete necrosis of target tumor than other loco-regional therapies(LrTs),rFA plays an important role as bridge therapy to liver transplantation(LT)(3).In the study from Lee and colleagues of the UCLA medical center,published in issue of June 2017 of Hepatology,Authors analyzed the outcome of 121 patients with 156 de-novo HCC treated with rFA as initial stand-alone therapy(4).The study is a fair attempt to analyze the efficacy of rFA as bridge therapy to LT,considering all potential outcome ***,some results passed unnoticed,while instead deserve further discussion.

Cardiac transplantation is currently the preferred choice of treatment for end-stage cardiac disease. Despite great advances have been made in the prevention and treatment of acute transplant rejection, accelerated cardiac allograft vasculopathy （CAV） still limits the long-term success of heart transplantation. CAV is a rapidly progressive form of atherosclerosis described by vascular remodeling of the graft coronary arteries that occurs uniquely in transplant recipi- ents. In the early stages, CAV is characterized by intimal proliferation, while luminal stenosis of epicardial branches, occlusion of smaller arteries and myocardial infarction occur in the later stages.

Measurement of strong phases, D-D mixing, and CP violation using quantum correlation at charm threshold

We review the measurements of the D decay strong-phase parameters based on quantum-correlated D^0D^-0 pairs produced in the e^＋e^→（3770） →D^0D^-0 process, and we discuss their role in the measurements of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle 7 and D-/9 mixing. In addition, we present estimates of the size of quantum-correlated datasets necessary to support the 7 and charm mixing measurements conducted at the LHCb and Belle Ⅱ experiments. Finally, we review the methods for measuring the D-D^- mixing and cP violation parameters at a high-luminosity charm factory, giving sensitivity estimates.
