Is there a relationship between dopamine and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment?

Dopamine and its receptors have been widely studied in the neurological conditions and in the retina. In this study, we evaluated the possible role of dopamine in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD) by comparing the amount of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid(DOPAC), a surrogate index of retinal dopamin levels, in the vitreous sample of patients affected by RRD with those affected by macular pucker and vitre ous hemorrhage. Our results showed that significantly higher levels of DOPAC were found in the vitreou sample of patients affected by RRD compared with those affected by vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker(P = 0.002). Specifically, no trace of the substance was found in vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker samples. A slightly significant positive correlation was found among DOPAC and post-operativ best corrected visual acuity(r = 0.470, P = 0.049). No correlation was found between DOPAC and the day elapsed between diagnosis and surgery(P = 0.317). For the first time our findings suggest that DOPAC i released in RRD, but not in other retinal diseases such as vitreous hemorrhage and macular pucker. More over, we showed a correlation between visual acuity outcome and the amount of DOPAC in the vitreous This might have a potential, although still unknown, implication in the pathogenesis of the disease and/o in the associated photoreceptors loss. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Rome Tor Ver gata University Hospital(R.S.92.10) on September 24, 2010.

Anxiety,depression,and quality of life in Parkinson's disease:the implications of multidisciplinary treatment

Anxiety and depression in Parkinson's disease(PD)reduce well-being of the patients.Emotional alterations influence motor skills and cognitive performance;moreover,they contribute significantly and independently to worsen rehabilitative treatment response.We investigated anxiety,depression,and quality of life in PD patients subjected to multidisciplinary rehabilitative training.The self-controlled study included 100 PD patients(49 males and 51 females with the mean age of 64.66 years)admitted to 60 days hospitalization rehabilitative program,between January 2017 and December 2018.Motor,cognitive,linguistic abilities,and functional independence were evaluated at admission(T0 baseline visit)and 60 days after(T1)the multidisciplinary rehabilitation including motor exercises,speech therapies,and cognitive intervention.The multidisciplinary rehabilitation improved functional status in PD patients and exerted its positive effects on mood,motor abilities,autonomy in the activities of daily life,perception of quality of life,cognitive performance and speech skills.Non-motor symptoms may worsen severe disability and reduce quality of life.They are often poorly recognized and inadequately treated.Nonetheless,multidisciplinary rehabilitative training represents an optimal strategy to improve disease management.The study was approved by Istituito di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico(IRCCS)Centro Neurolesi"Bonino-Pulejo"Ethical Committee(approval No.6/2016)in June 2016.

Colorectal cancer screening in countries of European Council outside of the EU-28

AIM: To provide an update on colorectal cancer(CRC) screening programmes in non-European Union(EU)-28 Council of Europe member states as of December 2015. METHODS: The mission of the Council of Europe is to protect and promote human rights in its 47 member countries. Its 19 non-EU member states are Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska, Georgia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Republic of Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, Russian Federation, San marino, Serbia, Switzerland, FYR of Macedonia, Turkey, and Ukraine(EU-19). The main data source were GLOBOCAN, IARC, WHO, EUCAN, NORDCAN, ENCR, volume X of the CI5, the ministerial and Public Health Agency websites of the individual countries, Pub Med, EMBASE, registries of some websites and the ***, Scopus, www.***.gov, www.***.eu, Research gate, Google and data extracted from screening programme results. RESULTS: Our results show that epidemiological data quality varies broadly between EU-28 and EU-19 countries. In terms of incidence, only 30% of EU-19 countries rank high in data quality as opposed to 86% of EU-28 states. The same applies to mortality data, since 52% of EU-19 countries as against all EU-28 countries are found in the high ranks. Assessment of the method of collection of incidence data showed that only 32% of EU-19 countries are found in the top three quality classes as against 89% of EU-28 countries. For the mortality data, 63% of EU-19 countries are found in the highest ranks as opposed to all EU-28 member states. Interestingly, comparison of neighbouring countries offering regional screening shows, for instance, that incidence and mortality rates are respectively 38.9 and 13.0 in Norway and 29.2 and10.9 in Sweden, whereas in Finland, where a national organised programme is available, they are respectively 23.5 and 9.3.
