Hippocampus is crucial for the formation of emotional memory. We found the relationship between hippocampal responses to emotional stimuli and the mental stabilities of people in our preliminary study. In this study, we have also evaluated how the emotional stimuli would affect amygdala and thalamus in the brain, and how the personality stabilities could relate to the responses in the brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We evaluated the subjects’ personality features with the Yatabe-Guilford Personality Test (Y-G test) and psychosomatic symptoms with the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). The subjects were categorized into the mentally stable group and the mentally unstable group according to the total scores of the Y-G test and the CMI. The brain functional responses under emotional stimuli were measured using fMRI. The region of interest (ROI) analysis was performed to abstract significant changes in order to compare responses among the different emotional stimuli. We conducted the regression analysis to abstract the relationship between the mean % signal change from fMRI and the personality stability. The fMRI results showed that the hippocampus, thalamus, and right amygdala activities under the human relationship stimuli increased with ascending value of mental instability. Our findings suggest that the memory process in the hippocampus and the threat alarm system in the thalamus under the human-related stimuli crucially influence the emotional reaction of mentally unstable people. These processes in the brain would affect the event that stresses on human relationships that often cause people to suffer from mental disorders.

An alternative visualization pipeline for large-scale data sets by using early visibility test point rendering

The amount of produced data required to be visualized and analyzed has grown year by year,and the traditional approach of using larger computational resources or exploiting task and data parallelism seems to have reached its ***,a new paradigm for large-scale data visualization becomes highly desired,and in this paper,we propose a new and optimized visualization pipeline which uses a point rendering-based early visibility testing for reducing the unnecessary rendering in the final stage of the visualization pipeline,and we named this technique“Early Visibility Test Point Rendering”.In a densely populated polygonal mesh scene,where multiple triangles may cover a single pixel,unnecessary and wasteful rendering will occur in the final stage of the traditional visualization pipeline,that is,during the rasterization ***,we propose an alternative visualization pipeline by introducing the“Early Visibility Test Point Rendering”for selecting only the visible polygonal elements for a given visualization *** visibility testing can be executed on the CPU side,and only the visible polygonal elements are needed to be sent to the GPU for an optimized *** could verify the effectiveness of our proposed approach by using synthetic datasets,and also a real-world large-scale simulation result.

Impact of changing our cannulation method on the incidenceof post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis after pancreatic guidewire placement

AIM: To clarify whether the incidence of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis (PEP) after pancreatic guidewire placement (PGW) can be reduced by using a different cannulation method. METHODS: Between April 2001 and October 2009, PGW was performed in 142 patients with native papilla to overcome difficult biliary cannulation. Our cannulation method for ERCP was changed from contrast injection (CI) using a single-lumen catheter (April 2001-May 2008) to wire-guided cannulation (WGC) using a double-lumen catheter (June 2008-October 2009). The CI protocol was also changed during the study period: in the first period it was used for routine pancreatography for detecting small pancreatic cancer (April 2001-November 2002), whereas in the second period it was not (December 2002-May 2008). In PGW with CI using a singlelumen catheter, the contrast medium in the catheter lumen was injected into the pancreatic duct. The success rate of biliary cannulation, the incidence of PEP according to the cannulation method, and the impact of CI using a single-lumen catheter on PEP in comparison with WGC using a double-lumen catheter were ***: CI with routine pancreatography, CI without routine pancreatography, and WGC were performed in 27 patients, 77 patients and 38 patients, respectively. Routine pancreatography did not contribute to the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in our study period. In CI without routine pancreatography and WGC, diagnostic pancreatography was performed in 17 patients and no patients, respectively. The success rate of biliary cannulation by PGW alone was 69%, and the final success rate was increased to 80.3% by the addition of consecutive maneuvers or a second ERCP. PEP occurred in 22 patients (15.5%), and the severity was mild in all cases. When analyzed according to cannulation method, the incidence of PEP was 37.0% (10/27) in the patients who underwent CI with routine pancreatography, 14.3% (11/77) in those

Fabrication of ZrC/ZrB₂/C Composites Having High Mechanical Properties at Elevated Temperatures

Ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) are most recently getting much attention for structural parts of hypersonic missiles with their cruising speed of more than Mach 5. Most of the UHTCs are poor sinterability carbides, nitrides, and borides. Therefore, they have been studied and developed for a long time. However, there are still many problems to solve. In this paper, based on the solid-state reaction presented as an equation of (x + y)·ZrC + 2·y·B → x·ZrC + y·ZrB2 + y·C, three-phase ZrC/ZrB2/C composites have been fabricated from ZrC and amorphous B powders using pulsed electric-current pressure sintering at 1373 to 2173 K for 6.0 × 102 s under 50 MPa in a vacuum. ZrC/ZrB2/C = 30/70/C~70/30/C vol% composites with the relative densities Dr of 96.6 to 98.7% were obtained at 2073 K. The 60/40/C vol% composite revealed high bending strength σb (554 MPa), Vickers hardness Hv (19.2 GPa) and moderate fracture toughness KIC (5.25 MPa·m1/2) at room temperature. Furthermore, all composites showed elastic deformation up to 1873 K and revealed σb more than 600 MPa at this temperature, in addition, some composites showed higher σb than 900 MPa at the same temperature. These high mechanical behaviors are discussed with those of the simple binary ZrC/ZrB2 composites which were fabricated under the same conditions except for their starting materials. The best mechanical properties of binary composites were σb (474 MPa), Hv (18.5 GPa), and KIC (4.45 MPa·m1/2) at room temperature, and σb of 400 - 700 MPa at 1873 K. Overall, three-phase composites, nevertheless including soft carbon, have higher mechanical properties than the binary composites.

Noninvasive Fetal Lung Maturity Prediction Based on Amniotic Fluid Turbidity Using Ultrasonic Histogram Measurement Function

Background: Amniotic fluid turbidity increases with fetal lung maturation due to vernix and lung surfactant micelles suspended in the amniotic fluid. This study focused on this phenomenon and evaluated the presence or absence of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)/transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) by quantitatively assessing the brightness of the amniotic fluid turbidity using a noninvasive ultrasound histogram measurement function. Methods: We included cases of singleton pregnancies managed at the Niigata University Medical and Dental Hospital between November 2020 and March 2022. Histograms of amniotic fluid turbidity were measured at the center of the amniotic fluid depth, avoiding the fetus, placenta, and umbilical cord, with the gain setting set to 0, and the average value was obtained after three measurements. Histograms of fetal urine in the bladder were measured similarly. The value obtained by subtracting the fetal bladder brightness value from the amniotic brightness value based on histogram measurements was used as the final amniotic fluid brightness value. Results: We included 118 cases (16 of RDS/TTN and 102 of control). The gestational age of delivery weeks was correlated with amniotic fluid brightness (Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was 0.344;p = 0.00014). Amniotic fluid brightness values were significantly lower in the RDS/TTN group than in the control group (RDS/TTN: 16.2 ± 13.5, control: 26.3 ± 16.3;p = 0.020). The optimal cutoff value of amniotic fluid brightness to predict RDS/TTN was 20.3. For predicting RDS/TTN, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 91.7%, 69.6%, 26.2%, and 94.1%, respectively. Conclusions: The quantitative value of the amniotic fluid brightness by histogram measurements may provide an easy and objective index for evaluating the presence or absence of RDS/TTN.

Large-area, transferable sub-lO nm polymer membranes at the air-water interface

Large-area, pinhole-free, and ultrathin polymer membranes with thicknesses of only a few nanometers have attracted increasing attention for their applications in molecular separation, flexible optoelectronics, and sensors. They can potentially be developed for surface protection as well. In this study, we report an effective way to obtain large-scale polymer coatings with a thickness down to 10 nm, which effectively protects metals from corrosion. We develop a facile and scalable method to fabricate freestanding polymer membranes with thickness below 10 nm by dropping the precursor polymer solution on a water surface. By optimizing the surface tension of the polymer solution, the solution could spontaneously spread on the water surface to form a continuous and uniform solid membrane, collected as a freestanding thin membrane. The obtained polymer membranes could then easily be transferred on a metal substrate as highly flexible and stable anti-corrosion coatings. Electrochemical measurements performed in a 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution demonstrated the excellent anti-corrosion properties of the sub-10 nrn polymer membranes whose corrosion rate was less than 1% of the corrosion rate of the bare metal. We also demonstrate that the polymer membrane exhibits high performance as a protection layer for flexible circuits.

The timing and extent of intraosseous hypoxia in the oxidative stress-induced rat osteonecrosis model

Using a rat oxidative stress-induced femoral head osteonecrosis model, we determined the presence/ absence and timing of the generation of hypoxia in the femoral head. DL-Buthionine-(S,R)-sulfoximine (BSO) 500 mg/kg was administered intraperitoneally to male Wistar rats. The rats were killed at 1, 3, 6, 12 hours, and 1, 3, 5 days after BSO administration, and the bilateral femora were removed. A group not administered BSO (control group) was also studied (each group n = 5). In the femoral heads of each group, the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) as an index of hypoxia was confirmed by the Western blot method, and quantified using analytical software. In the femoral head increased HIF-1α expression was found in all groups from 1 hour after BSO administration (p < 0.05). In particular, in all specimens of the group 3 hours after BSO administration the most intense expression of HIF-1α amounting to about 13-fold of that of control group was noted (p < 0.001). The present results suggested that in the extremely short period of 3 hours after BSO administration hypoxia severe enough to cause osteonecrosis was induced by oxidative stress in the rat femoral head.

Influences of Casting Pressure Conditions on the Quality and Properties of a Magnesium Cylinder Head Cover Die Casting

Casting pressure conditions have great influences on the casting defects, such as gas porosity, shrinkage porosity and gas holes. A Mg cylinder head cover die casting was used to experimentally study the influences of casting pressure, the loading time and the piston position of pressure intensification on the variation of pressure and the quality of casting. The results show that casting pressure, the loading time and the piston position of pressure intensification have great influences on the pressure variations in the mold, the quality and performance of casting. The external quality, the density and the tensile strength of casting were improved with the increase of casting pressure and the piston position of pressure intensification and the decrease of the loading time of pressure intensification.
