Glaciation-induced features or sediment gravity flows——An analytic review

For more than 150 years, geologic characteristics claimed to be evidence for pre-Pleistocene glaciations have been debated. Advancements in recent decades, in understanding features generated by mainly glacial and mass flow processes, are here reviewed. Detailed studies of data offered in support of prePleistocene glaciations have led to revisions that involve environments of mass movements. Similarities and differences between Quaternary glaciogenic and mass movement features are examined, to provide a more systematic methodology for analysing the origins of more ancient deposits. Analyses and evaluation of data are from a) Quaternary glaciogenic sediments, b) formations which have been assigned to pre-Pleistocene glaciations, and c) formations with comparable features associated with mass movements(and occasionally tectonics). Multiple proxies are assembled to develop correct interpretations of ancient strata. The aim is not per se to reinterpret specific formations and past climate changes, but to enable data to be evaluated using a broader and more inclusive conceptual *** occurring pre-Pleistocene features interpreted to be glaciogenic, have often been shown to have few or no Quaternary glaciogenic equivalents. These same features commonly form by sediment gravity flows or other non-glacial processes, which may have led to misinterpretations of ancient deposits. These features include, for example, environmental affinity of fossils, grading, bedding, fabrics, size and appearance of erratics, polished and striated clasts and surfaces(“pavements”), dropstones, and surface *** decades of progress in research relating to glacial and sediment gravity flow processes have resulted in proposals by geologists, based on more detailed field data, more often of an origin by mass movements and tectonism than *** most coherent data of this review, i.e., appearances of features produced by glaciation, sediment gravity flows and a fe

Phylogeny,taxonomy and diversification events in the Caliciaceae

Although the high degree of non-monophyly and parallel evolution has long been acknowledged within the mazaediate Caliciaceae(Lecanoromycetes,Ascomycota),a natural re-classification of the group has not yet been *** we constructed a multigene phylogeny of the Caliciaceae-Physciaceae clade in order to resolve the detailed relationships within the group,to propose a revised classification,and to perform a dating *** few characters present in the available fossil and the complex character evolution of the group affects the interpretation of morphological traits and thus influences the assignment of the fossil to specific nodes in the phylogeny,when divergence time analyses are carried *** fossil assignments resulted in very different time estimates and the comparison with the analysis based on a secondary calibration demonstrates that the most likely placement of the fossil is close to a terminal node rather than a basal placement in the Calicium *** dating analysis show two successive events giving rise to main clades of mazaediate taxa within the Caliciaceae,in the Upper-Lower Cretaceous boundary and in the *** a result of this study,Cyphelium is synonymized with Calicium,Acolium is resurrected,and the new genera Allocalicium and Pseudothelomma are *** new combinations are proposed:Acolium karelicum,Acolium marcianum,Allocalicium adaequatum,Calicium carolinianum,Calicium lecideinum,Calicium lucidum,Calicium notarisii,Calicium pinicola,Calicium trachyliodes,Pseudothelomma occidentale,Pseudothelomma ocellatum and Thelomma brunneum.A key for the mazaedium-producing Caliciaceae is included.

Sex ratio variation and sex determination in the mallee dragon Ctenophorus fordi

Recent evidence suggests that many Australian agamids show temperature-dependent sex determination(TSD)with variation in sex determining mechanisms among closely related ***,as shown in other vertebrates,sex ratios can also be influenced by genetic or phenotypic differences among females in their propensity to produce sons or daughters,and these influences might confound any thermal effects of incubation per *** address these issues,we investigated the determinants of sex ratios in the mallee dragon Ctenophorus fordi,together with a detailed analysis of *** was no detectable variation in sex ratios arising from variation among females,clutches or incubation temperatures,which might indicate genetic sex determination for this ***,there was no evidence of cytologically distinct sex chromosomes using standard banding *** sex ratio pattern in *** strongly contrasts with the results for the congener Ctenophorus pictus,where sex ratios show variation among ***,Australian agamids offer promising opportunities to address fundamental issues in sex ratio biology.

Pinning energies of organic semiconductors in high-efficiency organic solar cells

With the emergence of new materials for high-efficiency organic solar cells(OSCs),understanding and finetuning the interface energetics become increasingly *** determination of the so-called pinning energies,one of the critical characteristics of the material to predict the energy level alignment(ELA)at either electrode/organic or organic/organic interfaces,are urgently needed for the new ***,pinning energies of a wide variety of newly developed donors and nonfullerene acceptors(NFAs)are measured through ultraviolet photoelectron *** positive pinning energies of the studied donors and the negative pinning energies of NFAs are in the same energy range of 4.3−4.6 eV,which follows the design rules developed for fullerene-based *** ELA for metal/organic and inorganic/organic interfaces follows the predicted behavior for all of the materials *** organic-organic heterojunctions where both the donor and the NFA feature strong intramolecular charge transfer,the pinning energies often underestimate the experimentally obtained interface vacuum level shift,which has consequences for OSC device performance.

Steam Pretreatment of rice Hulls to Release Fermentable Saccharides:An Approach to Improve Recovery of(Hemi)Cellulosic Sugars Through Multivariate Design

The conversion of rice hulls into fermentable saccharides was explored through steam pretreatment employing 2.5% SO_(2).The in teraction between temperature and time was assessed by means of the response surface method to achieve optimum contents of C6-sugars in water-insoluble solids(WIS)and C5-sugars in the *** carried out at 218℃ for 2.3 min released liquor containing 55.4 g/L of sugars(29.1 g/L of xylose).In parallel,the WIS was subjected to enzymatic saccharification using different solid and enzyme loads via an experimental design:assays using 22.0% WIS and 20.0 filter paper units(FPU)/g led to 90.6 g/L of glucose,corresponding to a yield of 86.4% and an overall yield of 72.4%.The data reported are the highest ever found for such raw material,making it attractive to compete with conventi on al lig no cellulosic biomass.

Lichinodium is a new lichenized lineage in the Leotiomycetes

Here,we show that Lichinodium(Lichinaceae,Lichinomycetes,Ascomycota)constitutes a formerly unrecognized lineage within the Leotiomycetes,thus being the first lichenized lineage recognized in the superclass Sordariomyceta(Leotiomycetes,Laboulbeniomycetes and Sordariomycetes).To infer the position of Lichinodium,we constructed two multilocus phylogenies based on six and five gene regions(nuLSU rDNA,nuSSU rDNA,mtSSU rDNA,RPB1,RPB2 and MCM7)including main Pezizomycotina groups in the first analysis and focusing secondly on a comprehensive selection of *** results show that Lichinodium is sister to *** discuss the morphological and ecological similarities between Lichinodium and other Leotiomycetes,and describe the new order Lichinodiales and family *** sister relationship between Sordariomycetes and Laboulbeniomycetes is here supported as it is the relationship between this clade and the *** results also support the polyphyly of Helotiales,the recognition of the Leotiales in a strict sense or the inclusion of the Triblidiales in *** photobionts of Lichinodium were sequenced for two genetic markers(rbcLX and 16S rDNA)and identified as Rhizonema,a recently described genus of filamentous cyanobacteria belonging to *** studies revealed that the mycobiont-cyanobiont interface in Lichinodium does not produce haustoria,thus differing from a typical Lichinomycete(***).

Identification of resistant pharmaceuticals in ozonation using QSAR modeling and their fate in electro-peroxone process

The abatements of 89 pharmaceuticals in secondary effluent by ozonation and the electro-peroxone(E-peroxone)process were *** on the results,a quantitative structure-activity relationship(QSAR)model was developed to explore relationship between chemical structure of pharmaceuticals and their oxidation rates by *** orthogonal projection to latent structure(OPLS)method was used to identify relevant chemical descriptors of the pharmaceuticals,from large number of descriptors,for model *** resulting QSAR model,based on 44 molecular descriptors related to the ozone reactivity of the pharmaceuticals,showed high goodness of fit(R^(2)=0.963)and predictive power(Q^(2)=0.84).After validation,the model was used to predict second-order rate constants of 491 pharmaceuticals of special concern(k_(O_(3)))including the 89 studied *** predicted k_(O_(3))values and experimentally determined pseudo-first order rate constants of the pharmaceuticals’abatement during ozonation(k_(OZ))and the E-peroxone process(k_(EP))were then used to assess effects of switching from ozonation to the E-peroxone process on removal of these *** results indicate that the E-peroxone process could accelerate the abatement of pharmaceuticals with relatively low ozone reactivity(k_(O_(3))<∼10^(2)M^(−1)⋅s^(−1))than ozonation(3–10 min versus 5–20 min).The validated QSAR model predicted 66 pharmaceuticals to be highly O_(3)-*** developed QSAR model may be used to estimate the ozone reactivity of pharmaceuticals of diverse chemistry and thus predict their fate in ozone-based processes.

Oxidative stress physiology in relation to life history traits of a free-living vertebrate:the spotted snow skink,Niveoscincus ocellatus

Recent research suggests that oxidative stress,via its links to metabolism and senescence,is a key mechanism linking life history traits such as fecundity and growth with survival;however,this has rarely been put under empirical scrutiny within free-living *** a wild population of live-bearing skinks,we explored how plasma antioxidant activity(OXY),reactive oxidative metabolites(ROM),and the estimated oxidative stress index are associated with female and male life *** found that male skinks have a significantly higher ROM and estimated oxidative stress index than female skinks,but this was not accompanied by a sex difference in *** sexes showed a non-linear association between OXY and age,indicating that the oldest and youngest individuals had the lowest ***,female skinks with high OXY showed a decreased probability of survival to the following ***,we found no significant associations between female reproductive investment(litter size or litter mass)or parturition date(***)and oxidative ***,our results offer mixed support for a role of oxidative stress in mediating life history traits and suggest that future studies need to explore oxidative stress during vitellogenesis in addition to using an intra-individual approach to understand the cost of reproduction and patterns of aging.
