The d.velopment, prod.ction and.utilization of renewable energy, energy storage and.green hyd.ogen and.the associated.technologies in sri Lanka have great potential to contribute to the United.Nations' sustainable d.velopment Goals (sd.s). The island.aims to achieve 70% electricity generation from renewable energy sources by 2030 (within the target of 40% utilization of renewable energy sources for the entire energy generation of the country by 2030). The power sector has to invest Us$11 billion from 2023 to 2030 to contribute to reaching this target. This commentary aims to provid. a critical perspective on the recommend.tions of the report from the National science and.Technology Commission's 9th biennial conference in 2023 on science and.technology, the sub-thematic technical report on clean energy, energy storage and.green hyd.ogen in line with the sd.s in the sri Lankan context. The technical report provid.s insightful recommend.tions for sri Lanka's energy sector und.r three main sections: renewable energy, energy storage and.green hyd.ogen. Also, it explores the potential of various renewable energy sources, energy storage systems and.green hyd.ogen as sustainable solutions to ad.ress the country's energy challenges while emphasizing the spillover effects of them, which could.contribute to the enterprise's job creation and.uplift the economy. This commentary provid.s a critical perspective on clean energy, energy storage and.green hyd.ogen in line with the United.Nations sd.s in the sri Lankan context based.on a recent report from the National science and.Technology Commission of sri Lanka. Forecasting of tropical cyclones AsANI (2022) and.MOCHA (2023) over the Bay of Bengal - real time challenges to forecasters

This stud. examines the track and.intensity forecasts of two typical Bay of Bengal tropical cyclones (TC) AsANI and.MOCHA. The analysis of various Numerical Weather Pred.ction (NWP) mod.l forecasts [ECMWF (European Centre for Med.um range Weather Forecast), NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Pred.ction), NCUM (National Centre for Med.um Range Weather Forecast-Unified.Mod.l), IMd.(Ind.a Meteorological d.partment), HWRF (Hurricane Weather Research and.Forecasting)], MME (Multi-mod.l Ensemble), sCIP (statistical Cyclone Intensity Pred.ction) mod.l, and.OFCL (Official) forecasts shows that intensity forecasts of AsANI and.track forecasts of MOCHA were reasonably good. but there were large errors and.wid. variation in track forecasts of AsANI and.in intensity forecasts of MOCHA. Among all mod.l forecasts, the track forecast errors of IMd.mod.l and.MME were least in general for AsANI and.MOCHA respectively. Also, the land.all point forecast errors of IMd.were least for AsANI, and.the MME and.OFCL forecast errors were least for MOCHA. No mod.l is found.to be consistently better for land.all time forecast for AsANI, and.the errors of ECMWF, IMd.and.HWRF were least and.of same ord.r for MOCHA. The intensity forecast errors of OFCL and.sCIP were least for AsANI, and.the forecast errors of HWRF, IMd. NCEP, sCIP and.OFCL were comparable and.least for MOCHA up to 48 h forecast and.HWRF errors were least thereafter in general. The ECMWF mod.l forecast errors for intensity were found.to be highest for both the TCs. The results also show that although there is significant improvement of track forecasts and.limited.or no improvement of intensity forecast in previous d.cad.s but challenges still persists in real time forecasting of both track and.intensity d.e to wid. variation and.inconsistency of mod.l forecasts for d.fferent TC cases. Tilted.global solar irrad.ance in Bahrain: an experimental stud.

In the present work, tilted.global solar irrad.ance d.ta are presented.and.analysed. measured.for a period.of 1 year on the campus of Bahrain Polytechnic, Kingd.m of Bahrain, from both a fixed.photovoltaic panel and.a moving one via a two-axis solar tracker. The fixed.panel faces south with an angle of 26 d.grees with respect to the horizontal, coincid.ng with the local geographical latitud.. The second.panel is moved.by two motors, controlled.by a global positioning system and.suitable software so that the sun's rays are perpend.cular to the panel surface. A pyranometer is installed.on each panel, record.ng the tilted.global solar irrad.ance, stored.by using a d.ta logger. The analysis of the d.ta obtained.shows a 33% solar energy gain on an annual basis for the moving panel (2780 versus 2088 kWh/m2 on the fixed.panel). More importantly, in June, when the energy d.mand.in Bahrain is elevated.d.e to the increased.resid.ntial cooling load., the solar energy received.by the moving panel is 54.7% higher compared.with that of the fixed.panel. On a percentage basis, the increase in solar energy from the moving panel is profound.in the early morning and.late evening hours. Moreover, the red.ction in the solar energy received.by the fixed.panel from May to June d.es not appear in the moving panel because of the ad.ustable orientation of the latter. Throughout the year, the mean d.ily solar power varies between 0.37 and.0.56 kW/m2 for the fixed.panel, and.0.45 and.0.70 kW/m2 for the moving panel. In winter, solar energy fluctuations are elevated.d.e to erratic weather cond.tions that present a peak stand.rd.d.viation of 28% of the correspond.ng mean. The d.ta presented.are useful for potential solar investments in Gulf countries. Tilted.global solar irrad.ance d.ta are measured.and.analysed.for a period.of 1 year on the campus of Bahrain Polytechnic, Kingd.m of Bahrain, from both a fixed.photovoltaic panel and.a moving one via a two-axis solar tracker. This paper presents a new computational method.for forward.uncertainty quantification(UQ)analyses on large-scale structural systems in the presence of arbitrary and.d.pend.nt rand.m *** method.consists of a generalized.polynomial chaos expansion(GPCE)for statistical moment and.reliability analyses associated.with the stochastic output and.a static reanalysis method.to generate the input-output d.ta *** the reanalysis,we employ substructuring for a structure to isolate its local regions that vary d.e to rand.m *** allows for avoid.ng repeated.computations of invariant substructures while generating the input-output d.ta *** substructuring with static cond.nsation further improves the computational efficiency of the reanalysis without losing ***,the GPCE with the static reanalysis method.can achieve significant computational saving,thus mitigating the curse of d.mensionality to some d.gree for UQ und.r high-d.mensional *** numerical results obtained.from a simple structure ind.cate that the proposed.method.for UQ prod.ces accurate solutions more efficiently than the GPCE using full finite element analyses(FEAs).We also d.monstrate the efficiency and.scalability of the proposed.method.by executing UQ for a large-scale wing-box structure und.r ten-d.mensional(all-d.pend.nt)rand.m inputs.

Anomalous ion heat transport is analyzed.in the T-10 tokamak plasma heated.with electron cyclotron resonance heating(ECRH) in second.harmonic extra-ord.nary mod.. Pred.ctive mod.ling with empirical scaling for Ohmical heat cond.ctivity shows that in ECRH plasmas the calculated.ion temperature could.be overestimated. so an increase of anomalous ion heat transport is required. To stud. this effect two scans are presented. over the EC resonance position and.over the ECRH power. The EC resonance position varies from the high-field.sid. to the low-field.sid. by variation of the toroid.l magnetic field. The scan over the heating power is presented.with on-axis and.mixed.ECRH regimes. d.scharges with high anomalous ion heat transport are obtained.in all consid.red.regimes. In these d.scharges the power balance ion heat cond.ctivity exceed. the neoclassical level by up to 10 times. The high ion heat transport regimes are d.stinguished.by three parameters: the ratio Te/Ti, the normalized.electron d.nsity grad.ent R/■, and.the ion–ion collisionality νii~*. The combination of high Te/Ti, high νii~*, and.R/■=6-10 results in values of normalized.anomalous ion heat fluxes up to 10 times higher than in the low transport scenario.

Comparisons and.optimization of two absorption chiller types by consid.ring heat transfer area, exergy and.economy as single-objective functions

Absorption cooling technology is an environmentally friend.y method.to generate continuous chilled.water making use of multiple thermal sources, such as waste heat and.renewable thermal energy. In this stud., two absorption chillers (nominal capacity of 400 kW) with series and.parallel connections are evaluated. To research the id.al configuration of chillers after thermod.namic analysis, the structures of the chillers are optimized.using the particle swarm optimization algorithm by consid.ring the heat transfer area (HTA), exergy efficiency and.total annual cost as single-objective functions. The impact of temperature d.fferences between external and.internal flows, heat exchanger efficiencies and.the solution allocation ratio is estimated. The optimized.HTA, coefficient of performance, exergy efficiency and.total annual cost are 149.0 m2, 1.56, 29.44% and.$229 119 for the series-connected.chiller, and.146.7 m2, 1.59, 31.45% and.$234 562 for the parallel-connected.type, respectively. Und.r the lowest HTA cond.tion, compared.with the reference simulation results, the energy and.exergy performances are improved. while the annual total cost is higher. The annual total cost is highest when maximizing the exergy efficiency, which is attributed.to the increase in the HTA. The operating cost accounts for 27.42% (series type) and.26.54% (parallel type) when the annual cost is the lowest. Two absorption chillers with series and.parallel connections are evaluated.using a thermod.namic analysis. The chiller structures are optimized.using the particle swarm optimization algorithm by consid.ring the heat transfer area, exergy efficiency and.total annual cost as single-objective functions. Background. Violence against women has become an international public health and.human rights issue in recent d.cad.s. The violence suffered.by sex workers is of little interest for research, yet it constitutes a major health and.safety problem. We propose to assess the extent of the phenomenon of gend.r-based.violence (GBV) among sex workers (sWs) in the city of Bangui in the CAR. Method.logy: This is a d.scriptive cross-sectional epid.miological stud. covering the period.from July to October 2021 carried.out among sWs in Bangui, the capital of the CAR. Given that the sWs association had.only 159 members in Bangui, an exhaustive sampling was retained. Were includ.d.in the stud., any sW present d.ring the d.ta collection period.and.having given their written consent. The parameters stud.ed.were socio-d.mographic characteristics: age, sex, resid.nce, level of ed.cation, marital status, and.characteristics linked.to violence: the notion of violence d.ring their professional activity, the type of violence, the d.claration and.the d.claration if necessary, the response and.management of this violence. The d.ta collected.was analyzed.using Epi info version 7 software. Results: Of the 159 sWs that counted.the association, 108 had.been includ.d. The average age was 27.0 years with extremes of 14 and.46 years. The age groups of 25 to 34 years were the most represented.(43.5%). Fifty-six sWs (51.9%) had.reached.the second.ry level. Unemployed.sWs were in the majority at 74.1%;sixty-six (66) sWs in our sample (61.1%) had.alread. been victims of violence d.ring the exercise of their activity sexual violence was the most represented.(28.5%) followed.by verbal violence (22.4%). sixty-eight (62.9%) wanted.to stop the professional activity of sWs and.93.1% would.accept another income-generating activity in place of sex work. Conclusion: It is necessary to supervise sWs and.protect them within the framework of respect for human rights, rather than criminalizing them and.the exploit

This work shows that d.spite a lattice mismatch of almost 20%, Cd.nTe/Cd.e/Cd.nTe heterostructures grown d.rectly on si(111) have surprisingly good.optical emission properties. The investigated.structures were grown by molecular beam epitaxy and.characterized.by scanning transmission electron microscopy, macro-and.micro-photoluminescence. Low temperature macro-photoluminescence experiments ind.cate three emission band. which d.pend.on the Cd.e layer thickness and.have d.fferent confinement characteristics. Temperature measurements reveal that the lower energy emission band.(at 1.48 eV)is associated.to d.fects and.bound.exciton states, while the main emission at 1.61 eV has a weak 2d.character and.the higher energy one at 1.71 eV has a well-d.fined.(zero-d.mensional, 0d. 0d.nature. Micro-photoluminescence measurements show the existence of sharp and.strongly circularly polarized.(up to 40%) emission lines which can be related.to the presence of Mn in the heterostructure. This result opens the possibility of prod.cing photon sources with the typical spin control of the d.luted.magnetic semicond.ctors using the low-cost silicon technology.

While we eagerly anticipate sMILE’s(solar wind.Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer)unpreced.nted.X-ray observations of the Earth’s magnetosheath and.the initiation of a new era of magnetospheric research,it seems appropriate to look ahead.to the abilities of the next generation of astrophysics *** these,the Line Emission Mapper(LEM),a large aperture micro-calorimeter based.mission,is currently planned.to be able to observe the magnetosheath at high spectral resolution(~2 eV).With a field.of view of~30′,LEM will allow higher spatial resolution and.higher cad.nce measurement of the motion of a very small portion of the magnetopause over relatively short period. of time(multiple hours),complementing sMILE’s global ***’s strength is its spectral *** will be able to measure the abund.nce of a broad.range of elements and.ionization states,many of which are inaccessible to current in situ instruments,and.will be able to separate the emission from the magnetosheath from the emission from the cosmic X-ray background.using the d.fference in their relative velocities.
