Morphological variation of snails from the genus Trochulus is so huge that their taxonomy is unclear. The greatest variability concerns forms hispidus and sericeus/plebeius, which are often considered as separate species. To evidence the species barriers, we carried out crossbreeding ex- periments between these two sympatric morphs. Moreover, we compared the shell morphology of laboratory-bred offspring with their wild parents to test if the variation can be explained by the phenotypic plasticity model. We found that the two Trochulus morphs show no reproductive bar- riers. The fecundity rates, the mean clutch size, and F~ viability observed for all crosses were not significantly different. In hybrid crosses （in F2 generation）, we also recorded reproduction compati- bility, similar fecundity, and hatching success as in their parents. Accordingly, phylogenetic ana- lyses revealed the significant grouping of sequences from these different morphs and supported no constrains in reproduction between them. Comparison of shell morphology between wild and laboratory samples showed that various characters appeared highly plastic. The average shell shape of the hispidus morph changed significantly from flat with wide umbilicus to elevated with narrower umbilicus such as in the sericeus/plebeius morph. All these findings indicate that the examined morphs do not represent separate biological species and the evolutionary process is not advanced enough to separate their genetic pool. Therefore, phenotypic plasticity has played a sig- nificant role in the evolution of Trochulus shell polymorphism. The two morphs can evolve inde- pendently in separate phylogenetic lineages under the influence of local environmental conditions.

Geologically extremely rapid changes in attitude by glacial rebound of the Earth crust after retreat of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet at the end of the last Weichsetian glaciation influenced the patae- ogeography of northern Europe. The up（ift of the Earth crust apparently was not gradual, but shock-wise, as the uplift was accompanied by frequent, high-magnitude earthquakes. This can be deduced from strongly deformed layers which are interpreted as seismites. Such seismites have been described from several coun- tries around the Baltic Sea, including Sweden, Germany and Poland. Now similarly deformed layers that must also be interpreted as seismites, have been discovered also in Latvia, a Baltic country that was covered by an ice sheet during the last glaciation. The seismites were found at two sites： Near Vatmiera in the NE part and near Rakuti in the SE part of the country. The seismites were found in sections of about 7 m and 4.5 m high, respectively, that consist mainly of glaciofluvial and gtaciotacustrine sands and silts. At the Vatmiera site, 7 seismites were found, and at the Rakuti site these were even 12 seismites. The two sections have not been dated precisely up tilt now, but lithological correlations and geomorpho- logical characteristics suggest that the sediments at the Vatmiera site cannot be older than 14.5 ka. Because the accumulation of the section did not take more than about 1000 years, the average recurrence time of the high-magnitude （M≥4.5-5.0） earthquakes must have been maximally only 100-150 years, possibly only 6-7 years. The sediments at Rakuti must also have formed within approx. 1000 years （17-16 ka）, implying a recurrence time of high-magnitude earthquakes of maximaUy once per 100-200 years.

This paper presents the experience of border crossing by Hispanic Americans depicted by Gregory Nava in his two films： E1 Norte （1983） and Mi Familia （1995）. The former deals with the journey across the Mexican-American border in a literal sense; the latter describes the metaphorical borderlands separating Latina/os from Anglo-Americans in the USA. Nava＇s depictions emphasize family to counter the popular media stereotypes of Chicana/o as gang members. ＂El Norte＂ expresses immigrants＇ displacement and disillusionment with the American Dream, while ＂Mi Familia＂ places Mexicans within the history of LA （Los Angeles） and translates Latina/o culture into a narrative familiar to the mainstream audience.

Soil organic matter(SOM)in boreal forests is an important carbon *** aim of this study was to assess and to detect factors controlling the temperature sensitivity of SOM *** were collected from Scots pine,Norway spruce,silver birch,and mixed forests(O horizon)in northern Finland,and their basal respiration rates at five different temperatures(from 4 to 28℃)were *** Q10 values,showing the respiration rate changes with a 10℃ increase,were calculated using a Gaussian function and were based on temperature-dependent *** soil physicochemical parameters were measured,and the functional diversity of the soil microbial communities was assessed using the MicroResp?*** temperature sensitivity of SOM decomposition differed under the studied forest *** forests had the highest temperature sensitivity for SOM decomposition at the low temperature range(0–12℃).Within this temperature range,the Q10 values were positively correlated with the microbial functional diversity index(H’mic)and the soil C-to-P *** suggested that the metabolic abilities of the soil microbial communities and the soil nutrient content were important controls of temperature sensitivity in taiga soils.

Globally,fish are frequently introduced beyond their native ***,like Ponto-Caspian gobies,are becoming invasive,achieving high colo-nization rates and constituting frequent prey for native ***,little is known about the effectiveness of antipredator behaviors of the invaders,which may shape their role in the invaded community and contribute to the invasion *** compared antipredator behaviors of invasive gobies and native fish species after their detection by the predator,when the danger becomes *** studied 2 fish pairs,each consisting of an invasive and native species co-occurring in the environment and belonging to the same prey guild:(1)the racer goby Babka gymnotrachelus versus European bulhead Cottus gobio,(2)the monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis versus gudgeon Gobio gobio,facing a naive predator(the Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis).We analyzed behaviors of single prey individuals(escaping,staying in shelter,and activity)and sin-gle predators(activity,searching,following,capturing,and latency to prey consumption).In the predator presence,the bullhead was less active and more often managed to escape after capture than the racer *** gudgeon escaped before the capture more often than the monkey *** predator succeeded later with the bullhead compared to racer goby,whereas no differences in ingestion time occurred between the gudgeon and monkey *** results suggest that,in terms of hunting effort of native predators,the invasive gobies are equivalent to or more profitable prey than their native analogs,which can facilitate the integration of the gobies into local food webs.

The paper concerns the issue of ELF （English as a lingua franca） in the European and Asian context. The authors start from a brief conceptual perspective to shed light on salient aspects related to ELF. Then, this paper discusses the study investigating the interactions among NNS （non-native speakers） of English in the naturalistic settings, namely in Zhangjiajie （China）, Masouri （Kalymnos/Greece）, and Unterwasser （Switzerland）. The main objective of the research based on the qualitative methodology was to analyze the ELF interactions from the linguistic point of view focusing on lexicogrammar and pragmatic features. The secondary objective was to establish whether the identified ELF features contributed to communication intelligibility. The obtained results indicated a few significant similarities with the Seidlhofer＇s list of the ELT characteristics. Furthermore, it was established in the study that the ELF features did not interfere with effective communication between interlocutors

Extensive changes in plant transcriptome and metabolome have been observed by numerous research groups after transferring plants from optimal conditions to sulfur （S） deficiency. Despite intensive studies and recent important achievements, like identification of SLIM1/EIL3 as a major transcriptional regulator of the response to S-deficiency, many questions concerning other elements of the regulatory network remain unanswered. Investigations of genes with expres- sion regulated by S-deficiency stress encoding proteins of unknown function might help to clarify these problems. This study is focused on the UP9C gene and the UP9-1ike family in tobacco. Homologs of these genes exist in other plant species, including a family of four genes of unknown function in Arabidopsis thaliana （LSUI-4）, of which two were reported as strongly induced by S-deficit and to a lesser extent by salt stress and nitrate limitation. Conservation of the predicted structural features, such as coiled coil region or nuclear localization signal, suggests that these proteins might have ira- portant functions possibly mediated by interactions with other proteins. Analysis of transgenic tobacco plants with si- lenced expression of UP9-1ike genes strongly argues for their significant role in regulation of plant response to S-deficit. Although our study shows that the UP9-1ike proteins are important components of such response and they might be also required during other stresses, their molecular functions remain a mystery.

We conducted acoustical surveys with a horizontal beam transducer to detect fish and with a vertical beam transducer to detect depth and macrophytes in two typical shallow lakes along the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang(Yangtze) River in November 2013. Both lakes are subject to active fish management with annual stocking and removal of large fish. The purpose of the study was to compare hydroacoustic horizontal beam estimates with fish landings. The preliminary results show that the fish distribution patterns dif fered in the two lakes and were af fected by water depth and macrophyte coverage. The hydroacoustically estimated fish biomass matched the commercial catch very well in Niushan Lake, but it was two times higher in Kuilei Lake. However, acoustic estimates included all fish, whereas the catch included only fish >45 cm(smaller ones were released). We were unable to determine the proper regression between acoustic target strength and fish length for the dominant fish species in the two lakes.

According literature, the induction of Yarrowia lipolytica alkaline protease promoter （PXPR2） is efficient in pH 〉 6.0 and with high peptone dose. To establish optimal pH and peptone concentration for induction of invertase gene （suc2 of Saccharomyces cerevisaie） under PXPR2 in new Y. lipolytica A-101 invertase positive （Suc＋） transformants their growth on Bioscreen C was analyzed. Minimal mineral medium with thiamine （MMT） and sucrose （1%）, adjusted to pH from 5.8 to 7.6 and supplemented by 0-0.1% of peptone was used. Biomass （OD）, maximal specific growth rate （μmax） and consumed sucrose were measured. Maximal yeasts growth, resulting from the optimal PXPR2 induction, was observed at pH 7.2 and with very low peptone doses （0.0025% and 0.01%）. For five clones （A-101 1356-5; A-101 B54-6; A-101 B57-4; A-101 A18 and W29 ura3-302） only 0.005% of peptone was needed. Amount of hydrolyzed sucrose varied from 24% to 83% and μmax from 0.06 to 0.28 hl. Suc^＋ clones differ in growth parameters, so the site of yeast cassette integration into genome influences expression level of suc2 under PXPR2. Designing large scale processes with Y. lipolytica Suc^＋ clones peptone concentration has to be 100 times smaller than recommended so far.
