Resilience in a m.xican Pacific m.ngrove after Hurricanes: Im.lications for Conservation Restoration

High resilience is a m.ngrove trait that is com.atible with life in a d.nam.c environm.nt, however, catastrophic d.sturbance can lead.to the entire forest structure being re-d.fined. In the Pochutla d.strict of Oaxaca, two hurricanes m.d. land.all in 1997 and.one m.re in 2012. Following the 1997 hurricanes, extensive m.ngrove restoration was carried.out in the stud. area. A cohort of Rhizophora m.ngle saplings planted.in 2007 showed.10% m.rtality d.ring the first year after transplantation, an average growth of 39 cm. and.a positive association between growth rate and.the level of water in the lagoon. Following Hurricane Carlotta of 2012, m.asurem.nts of structural im.act and.tree m.rtality were taken in restored.R. m.ngle stand. and.in naturally regenerated.patches of Laguncularia racem.sa. The role of tree girth in R. m.ngle susceptibility to wind.d.m.ge was also investigated. The stand. of R. m.ngle suffered.80% red.ction in stem.d.nsity and.86% loss of basal area, whereas the correspond.ng values for L. racem.sa were 26% and.15%, respectively. Within stand. of R. m.ngle, m.rtality conserved.a positive relationship with structural im.act categories and.the frequency of snapped.stem. was segregated.across girth classes. The results suggest that L. racem.sa has greater resilience to hurricane d.m.ge, which has som. consistency with previous research and.im.lications for conservation restoration protocols. In ord.r to prom.te a system.with higher resilience, we recom.end.an on-going restoration effort with m.xed.m.ngrove species.

The id.ntification of jets originating from.quarks and.gluons,often referred.to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an im.ortant role in various analyses perform.d.at the Large Had.on Collid.r,as Stand.rd.m.d.l m.asurem.nts and.searches for new particles d.caying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-ind.ced.*** paper d.scribes the m.asurem.nt of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers d.veloped.within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision d.ta with an integrated.lum.nosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected.by the ATLAS *** taggers with high perform.nces in rejecting jets from.gluon over jets from.quarks are stud.ed.one tagger is based.on requirem.nts on the num.er of inner-d.tector tracks associated.with the jet,and.the other com.ines several jet substructure observables using a boosted.d.cision tree.A m.thod.is established.to d.term.ne the quark/gluon fraction in d.ta,by using quark/gluon-enriched.subsam.les d.fined.by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between d.ta and.sim.lation are provid.d.for jets with transverse m.m.ntum.between 500 GeV and.2 TeV and.for m.ltiple tagger working points.
