The primary objective of this study is to delve into transnational projects conducted between 2014 and 2020,with a strong emphasis on environmental quality.Our focus is directed toward projects that encompass either eco-innovation or feature elements intrinsic to a circular economy.To achieve this goal,we introduce a pioneering analytical framework tailored to dissect transnational projects,which intricately interweaves the diverse dimensions of environmental quality and innovation,facilitating a comparative assessment across various program classifications.Our approach aligns with the overarching mission of the four flagship initiatives,in which we evaluate the combined impacts on sustainability and innovation.This evaluation considers three fundamental factors:(1)resource allocation,(2)innovation type,and(3)infusion of eco-innovation or circular economy elements.Our methodology unfolds through a systematic,step-by-step progression.First,we meticulously handpick programs,specifically Interreg,Horizon,and Life projects,within the scope of TSG3(Environmental Quality).Each of these programs corresponds to one of the following four flagship initiatives:(1)overseeing and managing marine species,(2)fostering sustainable development in coastal and maritime zones,(3)safeguarding and elevating natural habitats and terrestrial ecosystems,and(4)formulating transnational contingency strategies for maritime accidents.Through an exhaustive review,we identify projects that either directly or indirectly champion eco-innovation or other facets of the circular economy.Concurrently,we uncover broader manifestations of innovation,eco-innovation,and circular economy principles.Employing the Oslo Manual as a guide,we methodically categorize these innovations into the product,process,organizational,and marketing domains.In the timeframe under scrutiny,a relatively modest subset of projects embraced eco-innovations and practices aligned with the circular economy.Our findings culminate in the formulation of practical implications to inv

Five different types of lowered snow line in alpine valleys

The snow line for the same precipitation event in alpine valleys can vary greatly from valley to valley, even when the valleys are close together. Often this is not due to a difference in air mass, but to a different interaction of topography and topographyrelated meteorological conditions. By knowing the causes of a lowered snow line, we can better understand the differences in snow cover in alpine valleys at the same elevation over short distances or the differences in snow cover between alpine valleys and areas outside the valleys. As different types of lowered snow line respond differently to climate change, we can also understand future changes in snow conditions in alpine valleys. To better understand the process, we observed the temperature conditions during winter precipitation events on the territory of Eastern Julian Alps(Slovenia) over a period of two years, focusing on the height of the zero isotherm. Depending on atmospheric conditions, especially changes in the temperature profile and precipitation intensity during precipitation events, five causes of lowered snow line have been identified. These types can occur individually, but during multi-day snowfall events they occur frequently or in combination.

Progress is being made on human Lunar and Martian missions by space agencies and private organisations around the world,with the aims of establishing reliable long-duration architectures.Complementing this,research is being carried out under controlled and isolated conditions within simulated space habitats,to gain insights into the effects of such conditions on the research subjects and their impacts on crews’wellbeing and success.This paper provides an overview of the experiments conducted during two separate 15-day missions—one Martian and one Lunar—conducted in the LunAres Research Base in Piła,Poland,in 2018.Some activities were common between the two crews;others were only carried out by one.Using the same methodology,both collected cognitive function,environmental,physiological,and inventory data,resulting in a larger dataset allowing comparisons between the two missions in terms of varying human factors.Experiments conducted by the Lunar crew included the following:effects of consuming lyophilised food on oral health and saliva production,influence of isolation on hearing capability,feelings on security in the isolated habitat,and research into earthworm growth in different soil compositions.The Mars mission analysed physical performances of the crew and compared them to performances realised during similar activities in Mars Research Desert Station missions and the impact of confinement on their efficiency performing a remote operation of a rover.For each piece of research,an overview of the background,methodology,results,and conclusions is given,referencing the resulting papers.In addition,nonresearch activities are included for completeness and context.

Background: Ovarian follicular fluids(FFs) contain several kinds of regulatory factors that maintain a suitable micro-environment for oocyte development. Extracellular vesicles(EVs) are among the factors that play essential roles in regulating follicle and oocyte development through their cargo molecules that include microRNAs(miRNAs). This study aimed to investigate small-EV(s-EV) miRNAs in porcine FFs and their potential association with oocyte quality.Methods: Individual aspirated oocytes were stained with lissamine green B stain(LB), a vital stain for oocyte quality, and each oocyte was classified as high-quality(unstained;HQ) or low-quality(stained;LQ). FFs corresponding to oocytes were pooled together into HQ and LQ groups. Small-EVs were isolated from FFs, characterized, and their miRNA cargo was identified using the Illumina Nova Seq sequencing platform. Additionally, s-EVs from the HQ and LQ groups were utilized to investigate their effect on oocyte development after co-incubation during in vitro maturation.Results: A total of 19 miRNAs(including miR-125b, miR-193a-5p, and miR-320) were significantly upregulated, while 23(including miR-9, miR-206, and miR-6516) were downregulated in the HQ compared to the LQ group. Apoptosis, p53 signaling, and cAMP signaling were among the top pathways targeted by the elevated miRNAs in the HQ group while oocyte meiosis, gap junction, and TGF-beta signaling were among the top pathways targeted by the elevated miRNAs in the LQ group. The supplementation of small-EVs during maturation does not affect the oocyte developmental rates. However, LQ s-EVs increase the proportion of oocytes with homogeneous mitochondrial distribution and decrease the proportion of heterogeneous distribution.Conclusion: Our findings indicated that FF-EVs contain different miRNA cargos associated with oocyte quality and could affect the mitochondrial distribution patterns during oocyte maturation.

Neuroendocrine and squamous colonic composite carcinoma:Case report with molecular analysis

Composite colorectal carcinomas are rare. There are amodest number of cases in the medical literature,with even fewer cases describing composite carcinoma with neuroendocrine and squamous components. There areto our knowledge no reports of composite carcinomamolecular alterations. We present a case of composite carcinoma of the splenic flexure in a 33 year-old Cau-casian male to investigate the presence and prognos-tic significance of molecular alterations in rare coloniccarcinoma subtypes. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded(FFPE) tissue was hematoxylin and eosin- and mucicar-mine-stained according to protocol,and immuno-stained with cytokeratin(CK) 7,CK20,CDX2,AE1/AE3,chromo-granin-A and synaptophysin. DNA was extracted from FFPE tissues and molecular analyses were performed according to lab-developed methods,followed by capil-lary electrophoresis. Hematoxylin and eosin staining showed admixed neuroendocrine and keratinized squamous cells. Positive nuclear CDX2 expression confirme dintestinal derivation. CK7 and CK20 were negative.Neuroendocrine cells stained positively for synaptophysin and AE1/AE3 and negatively for chromogranin and mucicarmine. Hepatic metastases showed a similar immunohistochemical profile. Molecular analysis revealeda G13D KRAS mutation. BRAF mutational testing wasnegative and microsatellite instability was not detected.The patient had rapid disease progression on chemotherapy and died 60 d after presentation. Although theG13D KRAS mutation normally predicts an intermed iateoutcome,the aggressive tumor behavior suggests other modifying factors in rare types of colonic carcinomas.

The Merits of Passive Compliant Joints in Legged Locomotion： Fast Learning, Superior Energy Efficiency and Versatile Sensing in a Quadruped Robot

A quadruped robot with four actuated hip joints and four passive highly compliant knee joints is used to demonstrate the potential of underactuation from two standpoints： learning locomotion and perception. First, we show that：（i） forward locomotion on flat ground can be learned rapidly （minutes of optimization time）; （ii） a simulation study reveals that a passive knee configuration leads to faster, more stable, and more efficient locomotion than a variant of the robot with active knees; （iii） the robot is capable of learning turning gaits as well. The merits of underactuation （reduced controller complexity, weight, and energy consumption） are thus preserved without compromising the versatility of behavior. Direct optimization on the reduced space of active joints leads to effective learning of model-free controllers. Second, we find passive compliant joints with po- tentiometers to effectively complement inertial sensors in a velocity estimation task and to outperform inertial and pressure sensors in a terrain detection task. Encoders on passive compliant joints thus constitute a cheap and compact but powerful sensing device that gauges joint position and force/torque, and -- if mounted more distally than the last actuated joints in a legged robot -- it delivers valuable information about the interaction of the robot with the ground.

We study complex involutive algebras generated by a single nonselfadjoint idempotent and use them to construct a family of algebras,which we call planar Lyapunov algebras.As our main result,we prove that every 2-dimensional commutative real algebra whose homogeneous Riccati differential equation is stable at the origin must be isomorphic either to an algebra with zero multiplication or to some planar Lyapunov algebra.

In this study, advanced techniques such as atom probe tomography, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to determine the corrosion mechanism of the as-ECAPed Zn-0.8Mg-0.2Sr alloy. The influence of microstructural and surface features on the corrosion mechanism was investigated. Despite its significance, the surface composition before exposure is often neglected by the scientific community. The analyses revealed the formation of thin ZnO, MgO, and MgCO3 layers on the surface of the material before exposure. These layers participated in the formation of corrosion products, leading to the predominant occurrence of hydrozincite. In addition, the layers possessed different resistance to the environment, resulting in localized corrosion attacks. The segregation of Mg on the Zn grain boundaries with lower potential compared with the Zn-matrix was revealed by atom probe tomography and atomic force microscopy. The degradation process was initiated by the activity of micro-galvanic cells, specifically Zn - Mg2Zn11/SrZn13. This process led to the activity of the crevice corrosion mechanism and subsequent attack to a depth of 250 μm. The corrosion rate of the alloy determined by the weight loss method was 0.36 mm⋅a􀀀 1. Based on this detailed study, the degradation mechanism of the Zn-0.8Mg-0.2Sr alloy is proposed.

Monitoring the Performance of Alpine Skiers with Inertial Motion Units: Practical and Methodological Considerations

Although reliable feedback is crucial to improving the performance of competitive alpine skiers,the coach’s eye may not be sensitive enough to detect small,but highly significant“mistakes”.Monitoring of the performance of alpine ski racers by inertial motion units(IMU)has proven to be of value in this context and here we summarize practical and methodological aspects of this approach.Methodologically,the IMUs employed should combine high sampling frequencies with minimal signal drift.The sensors should be positioned to sense the movement of the bones in a given body segment while being pro-tected as much as possible against impact with the ski gates.The data obtained,often synchronized with input from Global Satellite Navigation Systems(GNSS),are usually refined utilizing advanced biomechanical models and other computerized approaches.In practice,the combination of inertial sensors and GNSS allows accurate monitoring of skiing kinematics(technique)and the movement of the skier’s center-of-mass,also allowing analysis of both whole-body vibrations(WBV)and loss of mechanical energy.Presentation of the findings to coaches and athletes can be facilitated by synchronizing them with video recordings.Recent advances in IMU technology,including miniaturization,wireless communication,direct stor-age of data in the cloud,and processing with artificial intelligence may allow these sensors,in-combination with GNSS,to become real-time virtual alpine ski coaches,perhaps the next step in the development of this sport.
